The groundwaters in the basin of Seomjin River are classified mainly into Na-Cl type with high EC and $NaHCO_3$ type with low EC, and are characterized by enriched $K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\; NO_3^-,\; and\;SO_4\;^{2-}$ contents. The epm fraction of $Na^+Cl^-$ in TDS increases in general with increasing EC of groundwater. The correlation patterns among dissolved ions indicate that $Na^+\;and\;Cl^-$ are derived mainly from intruded seawater, and $K^+,\;Mg^{2-},\;and\;SO_4\;^{2-}$ from anthropogenic source such as a chemical fertilizer. The groundwaters that exceed the recommended limits far agricultural irrigation water contains $23\%\;of\;Cl^-$ reflecting sea-water intrusion, but $50\%\;of\;NO_3^-$ as an anthropogenic pollution, among the wells investigated. In risk assessment of groundwaters by the EC-SAR relationship, only $40\%$ of the groundwaters shows the suitable quality for agricultural irrigation water without any sodium and salinity hazards. Consequently, the pollution sources that cause degradation of groundwater quality in the basin of Seomjin River are the usage of chemical fertilizers and the intrusion of seawater, resulted primarily from the extension of riverward backflow of seawater and secondarily from the overpumping of groundwater.
In order to find out the short-term phytoplankton dynamics during summer season in Jinhae Bay, we investigated the environmental factors and phytoplankton population densities at 16 stations. A total of 66 phytoplankton species were appeared, diatoms occupied more than 80% of total species, and the others were dinoflagellates and raphidophyceaes. The dominant species were diatoms Chaetoceros affinis, C. didymus, C. pseudocurvisetus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pseudonitzchia pungens, Skeletonema costatum and dinoflagellates Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gymnodinium impudicum, Karenia mikimotoi, Prorocentrium minimum, Protoperidinium bipes and Scrippsiella trochoidea. According to multidimensional scaling (MSD) and cluster analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the Jinhae bay was divided into two groups. The first group included stations in the inner part of Masan Bay, which is strongly influenced by high nitrogen loading and low salinity by river discharge. The second group included the other remained stations. Based on canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), small-size dinoflagellates K. mikimotoi, P. minimum, P. bipes and S. trochoidea and centric diatom C. pseudocurvisetus and S. costatum, which is dominanted in the inner area of bay, were related with DIN (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite). These results imply that the study area was grouped into the two water masses (inner and outer water of Masan Bay) and inner waters had higher phytoplankton abundances and Chl.a concentration than outer waters. As a result, summer phytoplankton peaks in the inner shallow bay were stimulated by increases in nitrogen and temperature.
Rice (Oryza sativa) cultivars show an impairment of growth and development in response to abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, heat and cold at the early seedling stage. The tolerance to heat stress in plants has been genetically modulated by the overexpression of heat shock transcription factor genes or proteins. In addition to a high temperature-tolerance that has also been altered by elevating levels of osmolytes, increasing levels of cell detoxification enzymes and through altering membrane fluidity. To examine the heat tolerance in transgenic rice plants, three OsOPT10 overexpressing lines were characterized through a physiological analysis, which examined factors such as the electrolyte leakage (EL), soluble sugar and proline contents. We further functionally characterized the OsOPT10 gene and found that heat induced the expression of OsOPT10 and P5CS gene related proline biosynthesis. It has been suggested that the expression of OsOPT10 led to elevated heat tolerance in transgenic lines.

High salinity is a common stress condition that adversely affects plant growth and crop production. In response to various environmental stresses, plants activate a number of defense genes that function to increase the tolerance. To isolate Arabidopsis genes that are involved in abiotic stress responses, we carried out genetic screening using various mutant lines. Among them, the blh8 ($\b{B}$EL1-$\b{L}$ike $\b{H}$omeodomain $\underline{8}$) mutant specifically shows chlorotic phenotypes to ionic (specifically, $Na^+$ and $K^+$) stresses, but no differences in root growth. In addition, BLH8 is related to plant development and abiotic stress as predicted by a Graphical Gaussian Model (GGM) network program. It implies that BLH8 functions as a putative transcription factor related to abiotic stress responses. Collectively, our results show that gene network analysis is a useful tool for isolating genes involved in stress adaptation in plants.

This study was carried out to clarify the spatial and temporal patterns of macrobenthic assemblages on the subtidal area around Mokpo, southwest of Korea. A total of 238 species and 663 ind./$m^{2}$ were collected. Polychaetes were the most abundant faunal group that comprised 88 species and had a mean density of 389 ind./$m^{2}$. In the semi-enclosed Youngsan River estuarine bay and neighbouring Mokpo Port area were composed of fine sediments with high organic content, and revealed large seasonal variations in the salinity of surface water and bottom dissolved oxygen in contrast to little seasonal changes in those parameters in the outer area. The study area was classified into four station groups by the cluster analysis; the harbor area, the offshore area, and the inner and outer estuarine bay. Two estuarine bay areas showed different species composition; the dominant species of inner bay were Tharyx sp., Poecilochaetus johnsoni, Heteromastus filiformis and other opportunistic species whereas those in the outer bay were Ruditapes philippinarum, Corophium sinense. From the environmental data and species composition of benthic community, the inner bay was characterized to have unstable benthic faunal assemblages, especially under the seasonal disturbance and receiving large amount of organic matter input and intermittant discharge of fresh water. The coastal developments around Mokpo city also seem to have stressed the subtidal communities spatio-temporally.
Sea urchin roe obtained from Anthocidaris crassispina and Pseudocentrotus depressus was briefly salt-fermented (5%), followed by ethanol treatment (1%) and the physicochemical properties as well as antioxidant activity were investigated. Compared to raw sea urchin roes, the salted one showed a significantly low amount of water (p<0.001) high salinity (p<0.05), ash content (p<0.001) and Na content (p<0.001). With salt-fermentation, the redness (p<0.05) and yellowness (p<0.001) of roe decreased noticeably, indicating the decomposition of endogenous carotenoids. Accordingly, the salted roe showed a lower DPPH radical scavenging activity than its unsalted counterpart. Additionally, it showed a significantly lower metal-chelating activity (p<0.05) and metal chelator content (e.g. ortho-phenolics) displayed by a negligible difference in titratable acidity. The salted roe showed significantly increased hardness (p<0.05) and total reducing capacity (p<0.001), which were attributed to the protein coagulation and the release of antioxidants bound to macromolecules after the ethanol treatment, respectively.
The water qualities of Namdae-stream, Yeongok-stream and Sacheon-stream were examined, by using physicochemical factors, trophic status and epilithic diatoms from May 2008 to February 2009. The physicochemical water qualities of three streams were, except for some construction areas and sites of downstream, generally good, having less concentration than BOD of $2\;mg\;L^{-1}$. As for the sites of downstream, there were ongoing pollution such as graduation of nutrients in Namdae-stream and Sacheon-stream, due to salinity of seawater and topographical feature of the closed estuary. The examination of trophic status of Namdae-stream showed mesotrophic status in all the sites. Also, eutrophication was in progress as from the upstream to the downstream of Yeongok-stream, and Sacheon-stream showed eutrophic status in all its sites. As a result of the biological water quality assessment, Namdae-stream, excluding the downstream site, came out to be $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and biological water quality was good, having TDI less than 50. Some construction sites and downstream site of Namdae-stream are $\beta$-mesosaprobic, and with the TDI over 70, the biological water quality assessment came out to be polluted. Yeongok-stream is $\beta\sim\alpha$-oligosaprobic, and its biological water quality is good, having TDI less than 40. Sacheon-stream, excluding the upstream site on May 2008 and February 2009, is $\beta\sim\alpha$-mesosaprobic, and its TDI over 70 shows that it has been polluted. The correlation analysis showed a high correlation in both DAlpo and TDI. Also, biological assessment of water quality (DAIpo, TDI) showed higher correlation with TSI rather than BOD.
Understanding salt tolerance mechanisms is important for the increase of crop yields, and so, several screening approaches were developed to identify plant genes which are involved in salt tolerance of plants. Here, we transformed the Arabidopsis cDNA library into a salt-sensitive calcineurin (CaN)-deficient ($cnb{\Delta}$) yeast mutant and isolated the colonies which can suppress salt-sensitive phenotype of $cnb{\Delta}$ mutant. Through this functional complementation screen, a total of 34 colonies functionally suppressed the salt-sensitive phenotype of $cnb{\Delta}$ yeast cells, and sequencing analysis revealed that these are 9 genes, including CaS, AtSUMO1 and AtHB-12. Among these genes, the ectopic expression of CaS gene increased salt tolerance in yeast, and CaS transcript was up-regulated under high salinity conditions. CaS-antisense transgenic plants showed reduced root elongation under 100 mM NaCl treatment compared to the wild type plant, which survived under 150 mM NaCl treatment, whereas CaS-antisense transgenic plant leaves turned yellow under 150 mM NaCl treatment. These results indicate that the expression of CaS gene is important for stress tolerance in yeast and plants.
The changes of the contents of chemical components and sensory evaluation of Kimchis which were prepared by addition of different amounts of garlic were investigated during fermentation at $21^{\circ}C$ for 8 days. The range of salinity of Kimchis was 1.8-2.0% The titratable acidity of Kimchis was rapidly increased with garlic contents during fermentation. Ascorbic acid was decreased with fermentation but increased with more addition of garlic. Total sugar content was decreased until third day and the free sugar content decreased to 0.8-1.1g/100g at the 8th day fermentation. It was found that lactic acid and succinic acid were relatively high among the nonvolatile organic acids. The lactic acid content increased with the addition of garlic while succinic acid was not certain. During the whole fermentation, the result of sensory evaluation suggested that Kimchis contained more than 2g garlic were more palatable and desirable than eliminated garlic.
Phytoplankton samples for this study were collected by Van Dorn Sampler at 28 oceanographic stations in the southern waters of Korea in February, April and August, 1988 to characterize the distribution and species composition of phytoplankton and their relation to the movement of water masses. During the study periods, phytoplankton standing crops in the southern waters were maximum in April and minimum in February. When the geographical distribution and abundance of the phytoplankton were considered, the highest standing crops were found near the front zone formed between Cheju Island and Tsushima Island. Therefore, their abundance depends ell the location of the front zone. On the other hand, there were relatively low standing crops in the open sea off the coastal area from the front zone in February and August. The cause of the unusal low standing crops found in August at the station 205/01, the central part of the coastal area of the southern waters where the largest standing crops occurred in February and April, seems to be due to the intrusion of Tsushima warm waters. This is because the waters at the station have high temperature and salinity, poor dissolved oxygen and nutrient salts, which are identical to the characteristics of proper Tsushima warm waters. It seems that these warm waters may affect the poor productivity in this area. Seventy-two species in thirty-three genera of the phytoplankton were indentified from the samples. Among them, 61 species in 27 genera belong to diatoms and 12 species in 7 genera to dinoflagellates. The largest number of phytoplankton species occurred in August while the largest number of the tells in April. Predominant species were Eucampia zodiacus in February, Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus in April and Chaetoceros affinis in August. Eucampia zodiacus which was dominant in February and April seems to be a indicator of the southern coastal waters of Korea and mixed waters west of Cheju Island.
