  • Two-way slabs reinforced with high-performance steels, which have several practical advantages of a reduction of congestion in heavily reinforced members, savings in the cost of labor and repair, the higher corrosion resistance, and a reduction of construction time, were constructed and tested. The influences of the flexural reinforcement ratio, concentrating the reinforcement in the immediate column region, and using steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) in the slab on the punching shear resistance and post-cracking stiffness were investigated, and compared with the punching shear test results of the slabs reinforced with conventional steels and GFRP bars. In addition, the strain distribution of flexural reinforcements and crack control were investigated, and the effective width calculating method for the average flexural reinforcement ratio was estimated. The use of high-performance steel reinforcement increased the punching shear strength of slabs, and decreased the amount of flexural reinforcements. The concentrating the top mat of flexural reinforcement increased the post-cracking stiffness, and showed better strain distribution and crack control. In addition, the use of SFRC showed beneficial effects on the punching shear strength and crack control. It was suggest that the effective width should be changed to larger than 2 times the slab thickness from the column faces.

  • This paper is a report about lap splice performance of rebar embedded in the strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCCs) under monotonic and repeated tension loading. Ten mix proportions of cement-based composites such as SHCCs and normal concrete were investigated. The study parameters are comprised of (1) types of reinforcing fibers (polyethylene and steel fiber), (2) replacement levels of expansive admixture (EXA, 0% and 10%), and (3) compressive strength (30 and 100 MPa) of cement-based composites. Lap splice lengths (ld) of rebars in SHCC materials and normal concrete were 60% and 100% of splice length calculated by code requirements for structural concrete, respectively. Test results indicated that SHCCs materials can lead to enhancements in the lap splice performance of embedded rebar. All of the fiber reinforcement conditions (PE-SHCC and PESF-SHCC) considered in this study produced considerable improvements in the tensile strength, cracking behavior, and bond strength of lap-spliced rebar. Furthermore, adding EXA to SHCC matrix improved the tensile lap splice performance of rebar in SHCC materials. However, for controlling crack behavior, the performance of PE-SHCC was better than that of PESF-SHCC due to its mechanical properties. This study demonstrated an effective approach for reducing required development length of lap spliced rebar by using SHCC materials.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) uses large quantities of steel fiber, silica fume, filler and superplasticizer for a low water-to-binder ratio (W/B). Despite of exceptional mechanical performances, UHPC exhibits increased viscosity due to the adoption of silica fume and its fabrication cost is costlier than ordinary concrete because of the use of large quantities of expensive materials. Following, this study evaluates the mechanical properties of 180MPa-UHPC using zirconium silica fume (Zr) instead of silica fume with respect to the quantity and type of superplasticizer (SP) and the size of filler. The results reveal that the Zr-UHPC using W/B of 20%, 100% of Zr, amount of SP-L of 2 to 3% and $4{\mu}m$-filler with steel fiber in 1.5 vol.% can develop better fluidity than the traditional mix composition using silica fume and secure a compressive strength higher than 180 MPa. In addition, the proposed mix composition is shown to enable a reduction of the fabrication cost by 33% compared to traditional UHPC.

  • The flexural behavior tests of UHPC segmental U-girder and composite U-girder which has 160MPa compressive strength and 15.4m length were carried out. The test variables are volume fraction of steel fibers and slab over the U-girder. Each U-girder has longitudinal re-bars in web and lower flange. PS tendons which has 2 of 15.2mm diameter in upper flange and PS tendons which has 7 of 15.2mm diameter in lower flange were arranged and prestressed at onetime in U-girder connection stage. Enough strong prestressing force which applied to U-girder due to ultra high performance concrete strength can withstand the self weight and dead load in U-girder stage. By comparison with the brittle behavior of U-girder, composite U-girder showed the stable and ductile behavior. After the construction of slab over U-girder, flexural load capacity of composite U-girder can bear the design load in final construction stage with only one time prestressing operation which already carried out in U-girder stage. This simple prestressing method due to the ultra high strength concrete have the advantage in construction step and cost. The shear key which has narrow space has the strong composite connection between ultra high strength concrete U-girder and high strength concrete slab didn't show any slip and opening right before failure load.

  • Prefabricated bridge substructures provide new possibility for designers in terms of efficiency of creativity, fast construction, geometry control and cost. Even though prefabricated bridge columns are widely adopted as a substructure system in the bridge construction project recently, lack of deeper understanding of the seismic behavior of prefabricated bridge substructures cause much concern on their performance in high seismic zones. In this paper, experimental research works are presented to verify enhanced design concepts of prefabricated bridge piers. Integration of precast segments was done with continuity of axial prestressing tendons and mild reinforcing bars throughout the construction joints. Cyclic tests were conducted to investigate the effects of the design parameters on seismic performance. An analytical method for moment-curvature analysis of prefabricated bridge columns is conducted in this study. The method is validated through comparison with experimental results and the fiber model analysis. A parametric study is conducted to observe the seismic behavior of prefabricated bridge columns using the analytical study based on strain compatibility method. The effects of continuity of axial steel and tendon, and initial prestressing level on the load-displacement response characteristics, i.e., the strain of axial mild steels and posttensioned tendon at fracture and concrete crushing strain at the extreme compression fiber are investigated. The analytical study shows the layout of axial mild steels and posttensioned tendons in this experiment is the optimized arrangement for seismic performance.

  • Coupled shear walls consist of two or more in-plane walls inter-connected with coupling beams. In order to effectively resist seismic loads, coupling beams must be sufficiently stiff, strong and posses a stable load-deflection hysteretic response. Much of requirements to the civil and building structures have recently been changed in accordance with the social and economic progress. Ductility of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCCs), which exhibit strain hardening and multiple crackling characteristics under the uniaxial tensile stress is drastically improved. This paper provides background for design guidelines that include a design model to calculate the shear strength of pseudo strain hardening cementitious composite steel coupling beam.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have attracted considerable interest owing to the frequent earthquakes over the last decade. Smart concrete is a technology that can analyze the state of structures based on their electro-mechanical behavior. On the other hand, most research on the self-sensing response of smart concrete generally investigated the electro-mechanical behavior of smart concrete under a static loading rate, even though the loading rate under an earthquake would be much faster than the static rate. Thus, this study evaluated the electro-mechanical behavior of smart ultra-high-performance concrete (S-UHPC) at three different loading rates (1, 4, and 8 mm/min) using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The stress-sensitive coefficient (SC) at the maximum compressive strength of S-UHPC was -0.140 %/MPa based on a loading rate of 1 mm/min but decreased by 42.8% and 72.7% as the loading rate was increased to 4 and 8 mm/min, respectively. Although the sensing capability of S-UHPC decreased with increased load speed due to the reduced deformation of conductive materials and increased microcrack, it was available for SHM systems for earthquake detection in structures.

  • In the case of the Busan North Port, where the Busan Opera House is located, it is an environment exposed to various external deterioration factors such as frequent strong winds, seawater and salty winds, and an exterior material using UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete), a highly durable exterior material as a solution to this. Has been adopted. in this study, an economical production and construction direction was reviewed by applying UHPC to the exterior panels of atypical buildings that cannot cope with GFRC, metal, and glass, which are the main exterior finishing materials applied so far. When steel fibers are used, structural performance may be better than organic fibers, but due to environmental factors in Busan, corrosion due to exposure to steel fibers or problems with safety management after construction and completion may occur. Therefore, the site used the newly developed SACF fiber. Facade design of atypical buildings, which will increase in the future, is an important part, and the scope of use of UHPC panels is expected to increase in the future as design trends and demand for high durability increase.

  • Most of shrinkage is mainly caused by autogenous shrinkage in Ultra high strength steel-fiber reinforced cementitious composites(UHSFRC). water to binder ratio is very low, about 0.2. It occurs faster hydration and cause a large amount of autogenous shrinkage in early ages. the large autogenous shrinkage can cause harmful cracks in a structure and deteriorate the designed structural performance. therefore it is very important to predict the autogenous shrinkage accurately. The study about the autogenous shrinkage of UHSFRC was carried out in this paper. through comparing with JSCE recommendations for UHSFRC, it was found out that UHSFRC in this study showed higher autogenous shrinkage than that of JSCE. And Applicability of early proposed models by some researchers was also investigated. the analytical results let us know that Miyazawa's model showed the best agreement with the experimentally obtained autogenous shrinkage of UHSFRC.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has been developed to overcome the low tensile strengths and brittleness of conventional concrete. Considering that UHPC, owing to its composition and the use of steel fibers, develops a compressive strength of 180 MPa as well as high stiffness, the top flange of the steel girder may be superfluous in the composite beam combining a slab made of UHPC and the steel girder. In such composite beam, the steel girder takes the form of an inverted-T shaped structure without top flange in which the studs needed for the composition of the steel girder with the UHPC slab are disposed in the web of the steel girder. This study investigates experimentally and analytically the flexural behavior of this new type of composite beam to propose details like stud spacing and slab thickness for further design recommendations. To that goal, eight composite beams with varying stud spacing and slab thickness were fabricated and tested. The test results indicated that stud spacing running from 100 mm to 2 to 3 times the slab thickness can be recommended. In view of the relative characteristic slip limit of Eurocode-4, the results showed that the composite beam developed ductile behavior. Moreover, except for the members with thin slab and large stud spacing, most of the specimens exhibited results different to those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode-4 because of the high performance developed by UHPC.
