  • Diodes and GaAs have been commonly used in a mixer design until recently. However, diodes are not preferred to use at the front-end of DBS receiver due to the conversion loss large noise. HEMT has larger conversion gain and better noise characteristics comparing with GaAs MESFET. This paper describes the design procedure, structure, and performance of a mixer, utilizaing HEMT designed by OKI Co. . A mixer configuration in which the local oscillator(LO) signal is applied to the gate is used. When the LO power is 0.01 dBm, the conversion gain of 3.7dB is obtained at IF and the 3 dB bandwidth is 400MMz.

  • This paper elaborates two novel proposed topologies (type-I and type-II) of the high step-up DC-DC converter using switched inductor and voltage multiplier cell. The advantages of these proposed topologies are the less voltage stress on semiconductor devices, low device count, high power conversion efficiency, high switch utilization factor and high diode utilization factor. We analyze the Type-II topologies operating principle and mathematical analysis in detail in continuous conduction mode. High-intensity discharge lamp for the automotive application can use the derived topologies. The proposed converters give better performance when compared to the existing types. Also, it is found that the proposed type-II converter has relatively higher voltage gain compared to the type-I converter. A 40 W, 12 V input voltage and 72 V output voltage has developed for the type-II converter and the performances are validated.

  • We have designed and fabricated a low-cost, V-band CPW receiver chip set using GaAs PHEMT technology for the application of millimeter-wave wireless communication systems. Low noise amplifiers and down-converters were developed for this chip set. The fabricated low noise amplifier showed an S$\sub$21/ gain of 14.9 ㏈ at 60 ㎓ and a noise figure of 4.1 ㏈ at 52 ㎓. The down-converter exhibited a high conversion gain of 2 ㏈ at the low LO Power of 0 ㏈m. This work demonstrates that the GaAs PHEMT technology is a viable low-cost solution for V-band applications.

  • Objective: Stress factors such as high temperatures, overcrowding, and diurnal temperature range exert profound negative effects on weight gain and productivity of broiler chickens. The potential of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) as an excitatory neurotransmitter was evaluated under various stress conditions in this study. Methods: The experiment was conducted under four different environmental conditions: normal, high temperature, overcrowded, and in an overcrowded-diurnal temperature range. The experimental groups were divided into (-) control group without stress, (+) control group with stress, and G50 group (GABA 50 mg/kg) with stress. Weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio were measured, and stress reduction was evaluated through hematologic analysis. Results: The effects of GABA on broilers in four experimental treatments were evaluated. GABA treated responded to environmental stress and improved productivity in all the experimental treatments. The magnitude of stress observed was highest at high temperature, followed by the overcrowded environment, and was least for the overcrowded-diurnal temperature range. Conclusion: Various stress factors in livestock rearing environment can reduce productivity and increase disease incidence and mortality rate. To address these challenges, GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, was shown to reduce stress caused due to various environmental conditions and improve productivity.

  • A monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) chip set consisting of a power amplifier, a driver amplifier, and a frequency doubler has been developed for automotive radar systems at 77 GHz. The chip set was fabricated using a 0.15 ${\mu}$ gate-length InGaAs/InAlAs/GaAs metamorphic high electron mobility transistor (mHEMT) process based on a 4-inch substrate. The power amplifier demonstrated a measured small signal gain of over 20 dB from 76 to 77 GHz with 15.5 dBm output power. The chip size is 2mm${\times}$ 2mm. The driver amplifier exhibited a gain of 23 dB over a 76 to 77 GHz band with an output power of 13 dBm. The chip size is 2.1mm${\times}$ 2mm. The frequency doubler achieved an output power of -6 dBm at 76.5 GHz with a conversion gain of -16 dB for an input power of 10 dBm and a 38.25 GHz input frequency. The chip size is 1.2mm ${\times}$ 1.2mm. This MMIC chip set is suitable for the 77 GHz automotive radar systems and related applications in a W-band.

  • Eighteen Murrah male buffalo calves were allotted into three groups of six each. The calves in group I (control) were fed with whole milk, skim milk, calf starter and green maize fodder. The calves in group II (high butyric acid) and group III (low butyric acid) were fed with the same diet as control along with 24 ml and 12 ml of butyric acid/calf/day for 120 days, respectively for 120 days. Dry matter intake was higher in group II and III as compared with group I. Digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, cellulose and hemicellulose was the highest in group II followed by group III and the control group. Body weight gain and conversion efficiency of dry matter, digestible crude protein and total digestible nutrients were better in group II. Cost of feed for per unit of live weight gain was the lowest in group II. It was concluded that dietary addition of butyric acid (24 ml/day) was economical and had positive effect on the performance of Murrah buffalo calves.

  • Theoretical analysis is presented for expending of the usable frequency range of optoelectronic mixing detection in the radio over fiber network system. We define the normalized gain to evaluate the performance of the optical mixing detection, and conform the possibilities of detection for the high frequency signals beyond the cutoff frequency of a photodiode. Optical mixing detection mechanism is analyzed by solving the continuity equation for the carriers of a photodiode. The normalized gain is independent on the signal frequency and the frequency difference between the optical signal and the local signal. Also, the amplitude of the local signal and the bias voltage are needed to be optimized at the same time in order to maximize the normalized gain.

  • In this paper, an improved non-isolated 3-level high step-up boost converter is proposed. By using the well known duality principle, the proposed converter is derived from two-phase buck converter. Compared with the traditional boost converter and 3-level boost converter, the proposed converter can obtain very high voltage conversion ratio and the voltage stress of switching devices and diodes is only 1/4 of the output voltage. A 1 kW prototype converter is built and tested to verify performances of the proposed converter.

  • An interleaved current-fed high step-up DC-DC converter is proposed. Besides high voltage gain, a low ripple input current is achieved by adopting interleaving operation. Moreover, soft-switching characteristic of the proposed converter reduces switching losses of active power switches and raise the conversion efficiency. The reverse-recovery problem of output rectifiers is also alleviated by controlling the current changing rates of diodes by utilizing the leakage inductances of transformers. Experimental results obtained on a 200W prototype are discussed.
