This study was designed to investigate the effect of supplementation of fish oil on serum lipid in young healthy females. Eighteen female college students were divided into 3 groups. Each group fed a typical Korean diet supplemented with 15g, 12g and 9g of fish oil respectively for 1 week. Blood samples were obtained 4 times before supplementation, immediatly after supplementation, 1 week after stopping supplementation and 3 week after stopping supplementation. After 6 week break, the doses of fish oil were interchanged among 3 groups and the experiment was repeated to reduce interindivisual variation. The level of total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein(HDL)-cholesterol, low density lipoprotein(LDL)-cholesterol in the serum samples were determined immediately after stopping supplementation and then the value compared with those of the before supplementation period. The results obtained are summarised as follows; The serum TC levels decreased significatly(p<0.01) immediately after supplementation of fish oil and 1 week after stopping supplementation. The serum TG levels also decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after supplementation of fish oil. The HDL-cholesterol levels increased significantly(p<0.05) at 2 week and 3 weeks after stopping supplementation of fish oil in the 12g and the 15g supplementation groups. The LDL-cholesterol levels decreased significantly(p<0.05) immediately after and 1 week after stopping supplementation of fish oil. The ratio of HDL-C to TC increased significantly(p<0.01) and the ratio of LDL-C to HDL-C, and index of artherogenesity, decreased significantly(p<0.05).
This study was designed to assess the body fat distribution, and also to investigate the effects of body fat on glucose tolerance and on insulin secretion pattern by body mass index in offspring of parents with NIDDM. The subjects consisted of twenty parents with NIDDM who had been admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine or had been seen in the outpatient clinic at Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University between February to March, 1995. Twenty offspring were randomly selected from forty six offspring of twenty parents with NIDDM. As a control group, twenty healthy people without a family history of diabetes mellitus were matched by sex, age and body mass index(BMI). The results are as follows : 1. Mean fasting serum glucose and insulin levels and insulin / glucose ratio were significantly greater in offspring than in the control subjects with BMI 25kg /㎡ in the offspring and in the BMI<25kg /㎡ control subjects (P<0.05). 2. The total glucose area and insulin area were significantly greater in both the offsping and the control subjects with BMI≥25kg /㎡ than in both the offspring and the control subjects with BMI<25 kg /㎡(P<0.05). 3. Upper body skinfold thickness, Waist hip ratio(WHR), serum levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride(TG), total dietary calorie intake and protein intake in both the offspring and the control subjects with BMI≥25kg /㎡ were greater than those with BMI<25kg /㎡(P<0.05). On the other hand, HDL-cholesterol in both the offspring and the control subjects with BMI≥25kg /㎡ was lower than those with BMI< 25kg /㎡(P<0.05). 4. The major variables influencing the total glucose area were subscapular skinfold thickness and WHR and the major variables influencing the total insulin area were suprailiac skinfold thickness, WHR, TG and free fatty acid. In the light of the results, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance were affected by body mass index, Upper body fat, WHR and lipids(TG, Free fatty acid), it is implied that these are influencing factors on total glucose area and total insulin area. The identification of these factors might provide a useful tool to identify individuals at high risk of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, various nursing intervention programs to reduce obesity could be given to both the offspring of parents with NIDDM and to the obese healthy controls before diabetes mellitus develops.

This paper presents a new dual-loop Delay Locked Loop(DLL) to expand the delay lock range of a conventional DLL. The proposed dual-loop DLL contains a Coarse_loop and a Fine_loop, and its operation utilizes one of the loops selected by comparing the initial time-difference among the reference clock and 2 internal clocks. The 2 internal clock signals are taken, respectively, at the midpoint and endpoint of a VCDL and thus are $180^{\circ}$ separated in phase. When the proposed DLL is out of the conventional lock range, the Coarse_loop is selected to push the DLL in the conventional lock range and then the Fine_loop is used to complete the locking process. Therefore, the proposed DLL is always stably locked in unless it is harmonically false-locked. Since the VCDL employed in the proposed DLL needs two control voltages to adjust the delay time, it uses TG-based inverters, instead of conventional, multi-stacked, current-starved inverters, to compose the delay line. The new VCDL provides a wider delay range than a conventional VCDL In overall, the proposed DLL demonstrates a more than 2 times wider lock range than a conventional DLL. The proposed DLL circuits have been designed, simulated and proved using 0.18um, 1.8V TSMC CMOS library and its operation frequency range is 100MHz${\sim}$1GHz. Finally, the maximum phase error of the DLL locked in at 1GHz is less than 11.2ps showing a high resolution and the simulated power consumption is 11.5mW.

Aims: To study alterations of plasma lipid profiles in carcinoma cervix and to assess significance comparedwith controls in different histological grades and stages. Materials and Methods: Totals of 99 histopathologically diagnosed cases and 35 controls from a tertiary hospital situated in the southern part of India which caters the rural and semi-urban populations were considered for the study. Fasting blood samples were taken to analyze total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL-C), for comparison of cases, grouped according to histological grades and stages, and controls. One way ANOVA was used for multiple group comparisons and the Student's t test (unpaired) for group wise comparisons. For all tests a 'p' value of 0.05 or less was considered as significant. Results: Out of 99 cases, most (n-39) were seen in the 40-49 year age group followed by 60-69 years (n-22). Serum TG significantly differed between cases and controls but without any relation to differentiation grade. The lipid profile parameters in various grades of cervical cancer were not statistically significant. Statistically significant increase of TC and LDL-C values was observed with increase in stage of the disease. Conclusions: The study showed TG is elevated in cervical cancer, and that TC and LDL-C are proportional to the spread of cancer as it increases from stage I to stage IV. An in-depth study of molecular changes in lipid metabolism in cervical cancer patients, enzymes/genes responsible and alterations in LDL receptors is necessary to provide information to decide whether the lipid profile has any diagnostic/prognostic role in cervical cancer.

The purpose of this study is to compare the relative risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) in middle aged adults with different body weights. 155 subjects living in urban Beijing were recruited from 24 neighborhood committees of urban Beijing. They were divided into normal weight, overweight and obese groups according to their BMIs. The general information of the subjects was collected using an interview-administered questionnaire. Standard procedure was followed to measure subject's weight, height and waist. Biochemical parameters (total cholesterol (TC), low- and highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C ; HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and fasting glucose) and blood pressure were also determined. The results indicated that the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, HDL-C of obese group was lower than that of the normal weight group. Fasting glucose of obese males was significantly higher than that of normal weight males. No significant difference of fasting glucose was found among female groups. No significant difference of TG was found among male groups, while TG of overweight and obese females was both significantly higher than normal weight females. There was no significant difference of TC and LDL-C among normal weight, overweight and obese groups in both males and females. The MS rate of obese males was significantly higher than the normal weight and overweight males, as was the female. The relative risk of MS in obese group was about 11 times higher (OR=11.249, $95\%CI$ = 3.812 - 33.191) than the normal weight group after adjusting for age, gender, smoking, drinking, family economic level and education status. It is concluded that obesity contributed to lower HDL-C, hypertriglyceride, hypertension and MS after controlling the effects of age, gender, socioeconomic status, alcohol drinking and smoking. Obese individuals have a higher risk of having MS than their normal weight counterparts.

Triglyceride was decreased significantly at the laser acupuncture of Stream Point group. Cu/Zn-Superoxide Dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX) were increased significantly at the laser acupuncture of Well Point group. Conclusions : The laser acupuncture treatment in five transport points of the Heart Meridian was effective for lowering blood pressure, cardiac hypertrophy, Atherogenic index and HTR, and for enhancing antioxidant activity.
Present study aims to investigate the effect of muddy water on gill and kidney tissues and blood components of Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis in Imha reservoir. As a result of observing the gill tissues in muddy water with light and scanning electron microscopes, the edema, the exfoliation of epithelial cells and fusion of the secondary lamellae were observed. The space between gill lamellae was irregular, and a lots of muddy debris around the secondary lamellae were observed. In case of kidney tissues, the size of glomerulus was smaller and thickness of basal membrane was broader and the empty space in Bowman's capsule was wider than those of the control. The blood cells of O. uncirostris amurensis in muddy water were increased in number. Of the white blood cells, acidophilic granulocytes were highly distributed, and the shapes were irregular. Among the plasma components, the concentration of TP, ALB, A/G ratio, TG, CHOL, and AST were low, whereas that of the inorganic materials was high. Based on the above results, it is considered that muddy water possibly involves in the decrease of respiratory and excretory rates, giving rise to secondary lesion of tissues.
Transformation-associated recombination (TAR) cloning is based on co-penetration into yeast spheroplasts of genomic DNA along with TAR vector DNA that contains 5'- and 3'-sequences (hooks) specific for a gene of interest, followed by recombination between the vector and the human genomic DNA to establish a circular YAC. Typically, the frequency of recombinant insert capture is 0.01-1% for single-copy genes by TAR cloning. To further refine the TAR cloning technology, we determined the effect of GC content on target hooks required for gene isolation utilizing the $Tg\cdot\AC$ mouse transgene as the targeted region. For this purpose, a set of vectors containing a B1 repeated hook and Tg AC-specific hooks of variable GC content (from 18 to 45%) was constructed and checked for efficiency of transgene isolation by radial TAR cloning. Efficiency of cloning decreased approximately 2-fold when the TAR vector contained a hook with a GC content ~${\leq}23$% versus ~40%. Thus, the optimal GC content of hook sequences required for gene isolation by TAR is approximately 40%. We also analyzed how the distribution of high GC content (65%) within the hook affects gene capture, but no dramatic differences for gene capturing were observed.
Purpose: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to increase worldwide, and blood glucose control may reduce mortality from diabetic complications and healthcare costs. Mulberry twig (MT) has been used as a herbal medicine in Asia, and its antidiabetic efficacy has recently been reported, but research in this area is still limited. This study examined the antidiabetic effects of water extracts of MT in diabetic animals. Methods: Six weeks old male ICR mice were divided randomly into three groups; normal control (NC, n = 10), DM control (DC, n = 10), and MT (n = 10). Streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg/day) was injected intraperitoneally into mice in the DC and MT groups for 5 consecutive days. After 10 days of the last STZ injection, the mice in the MT group were administered orally with MT water extracts (5 g/kg body weight) for 16 days. Results: The MT water extracts ameliorated the swelling of the liver in the diabetic mice and reduced the elevated levels of fasting blood and plasma glucose, total cholesterol (T-CHO), low density lipoprotein-CHO, and the ratio of high density lipotrotein (HDL)-CHO/T-CHO. The liver triglyceride (TG) and glycogen contents were also significantly lower in the MT group mice than in the DC group. The small intestine disaccharidase activity was analyzed to understand the therapeutic effects and the mechanism of MT water extracts in diabetic animals. MT group mice showed reduced lactase and sucrase activity in the proximal part of the small intestine. On the other hand, body weight, plasma insulin, TG, HDL-CHO, and hepatic T-CHO levels were similar in the DC and MT groups. Conclusion: These results suggest that MT water extracts have antidiabetic effects and can be developed as a functional source to reduce the postprandial blood glucose or to prevent DM incidence.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidative potential of Korean wild leaf vegetables in vivo as well as in vitro. The antloxidative activities of Pleurospemum kamtschaticum, Aderophora remotiflor and Aster gfheni were evaluated as a reference for Spinacia oleracea. Fifty rats were find either a control diet or one of several vegetable diets for 4 weeks. The level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and the activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the liver were compared. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) in plasma were also compared. Also, the contents of $\beta$-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and total phenolic compound, including flavonoid and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value using linoleic acid model system, were measured in Korean wind leaf vegetables. The TBARS values of Aderophora remotiflor and Aster giheni tended to be lower than that of Spinacia olerncea. The SOD activity of Artrr glheffi was significantly higher than that of Spinacia oleracea and reached 265% that of the control animals, whereas there was no difference between the control animals and the vegetable diet animals in terms of catalase activity. Compared to the control animals, TG and TC levels were significantly solver and showed a lower artheriosclerotic index. TBA values of Pleurospemum Kamschaticum and Aderophora remptiflor were only 18% of control value. TBA value of Spinacia olerucra was 41% of control value. These results suggest that Aderophora remotinor and Aster glheni could have antioxidative potency in vivo as well as in vitro and potential value far functional flood to improve the plasma lipid profile. flavonoid and phenolic compounds could be the major contributing factor in the antioxidative potential of Aderophora remotiflor and Aster glheni.
