  • The SNR estimation performance of hierarchical 16QAM system, which is adopted to simultaneous transmission or efficient image transmission system, is analyzed. Hierarchical 16QAM is modulation system which has different constellation shape from conventional QAM and can provide users with high quality and low quality of data services simultaneously by controlling hierarchical modulation parameter. Assuming AWGN channel, SNR estimation performance characteristics are investigated considering hierarchical modulation parameter and type of constellation points. From simulation results, it is found that constellation point showing superior SNR estimation performance relative to other points is exist. Also, it is known that according to hierarchical modulation parameter, SNR estimation range with more accurate estimation performance is divided.

  • In this paper, we proposed a nonlinear hierarchical mtion estimation method. Generally, the conventional hierarchical motion estimation methods have been proposed for fast convergence and detection of large motions. But they have a common drawback that large error in motion estimation is propapated across motion discontinuities. This artifiact is due to the constriaint of motion continuity and the linear interpolation of motion vectors between hierarchical levels. In this paper, we propose an effective hierarchical motion estimation mechod that is robust to motion discontinuities. The proposed algorithm is based on the decomposition of the functional domain for optimizing the intra-level motion estimation functional. Also, we propose an inter-level nonlinear motion estimation equation rather than using the conventional linearprojection scheme of motion field. computer simulations with several test sequences show tht the proposed algorithm performs better than several conventional methods.

  • Most regression models of anthropometric variables use stature and/or weight as regressors; however, these 'flat' regression models result in large errors for anthropometric variables having low correlations with the regressors. To develop more accurate regression models for anthropometric variables, this study proposed a method to estimate anthropometric variables in a hierarchical manner based on the relationships among the variables and a process to develop and improve corresponding regression models. By applying the proposed approach, a hierarchical estimation structure was constructed for 59 anthropometric variables selected for the occupant package design of a passenger car and corresponding regression models were developed with the 1988 US Army anthropometric survey data. The hierarchical regression models were compared with the corresponding flat regression models in terms of accuracy. As results, the standard errors of the hierarchical regression models decreased by 28% (4.3mm) on average compared with those of the flat models.

  • In this paper, we propose a motion estimation algorithm using hierarchical structure. The algorithm uses the image pyramids from the repetitive application of Gaussian filtering and decimation, and performs an inter-level displacement propagation in its motion estimation process. The motion estimation algorithm based on the hierarchical structure is shown to be very effective since this scheme utilizes the local imformation as well as the global imformation. The experimental results on the various data imdicate that compared to the Horn and Schunck's method, the proposed algorithm yields an accurate motion estimation with a fast convergence behaviour.

  • This paper reports an efficient algorithm for accurate rolling shutter distortion removal. A hierarchical global motion estimation approach for a group of blocks reduces the level of computation by three orders of magnitude. In addition, the motion of each scanline is determined accurately by averaging two candidates obtained through cubic spline interpolation. The experimental results show that the proposed method produces accurate motion information with significant computation reduction and corrects the rolling shutter distortion effectively.

  • This paper presents a method of hierarchical state estimation of the time-varying linear systems via Block-pulse function(BPF). When we estimate the state of the systems where noise is considered, it is very difficult to obtain the solutions because minimum error variance matrix having a form of matrix nonlinear differential equations is included in the filter gain calculation. Therefore, hierarchical approach is adapted to transpose matrix nonlinear differential equations to a sum of low order state space equation from and Block-pulse functions are used for solving each low order state space equation in the form of simple and recursive algebraic equation. We believe that presented methods are very attractive nd proper for state estimation of time-varying linear systems on account of its simplicity and computational convenience. • An intermediate images generation method using multi-resolution based hierarchical block matching disparity map is proposed. This method is composed of a disparity estimation, an occlusion detection and intermediate image synthesis. For the disparity estimation, which is one of the important processes in intermediate image synthesis, we use the multi-resolution based hierarchical block matching algorithm to overcome the imperfect ness of block matching algorithm. The proposed method makes disparity maps more accurate and dense by multi-resolution based hierarchical block matching, and the estimated disparity maps are used to generate intermediate images of stereo images. Generated intermediate images show 0.1∼1.4 ㏈ higher PSNR than the images obtained by block matching algorithm.

  • This paper describes a hierarchical method for image-based age estimation that combines age group classification and age value estimation. The proposed method uses a coarse-to-fine strategy with different appearance features to describe facial shape and texture. Considering the damage to continuity between neighboring groups caused by fixed divisions during age group classification, a dynamic grouping technique is employed to allow non-fixed groups. Based on the given group, an ordinal hyperplane ranking (OHRank) model is employed to transform age estimation into a series of binary enquiry problems that can take advantage of the intrinsic correlation and ordinal information of age. A set of experiments on FG-NET are presented and the results demonstrate the validity of our solution.

  • This paper invetigates estimation methods of mapping parameters in object-oriented coding. In this paper, we propose a fast parameter estimation method with its performance similar to that of the conventional methods. We employ hierarchical structure in difference images to redcue the computational complexity and also combine conventional six- and eight-mapping parameter estimation methods to compensate for the performance degradation caused by employment of hierarchical structure. Computer simulation shows that the proposed mehtod gives results similar to conventional methods with greatly reduced computational complexity.
