This study was carried out to investigate the antidiabetic effect of Lonicerae japonica Thunb(LJ) in the streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The effective fractions were prepared as a form of organic solvents of hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol, water fractions prepared from the ethanol extract of LJ. The content of serum glucose and the activities of glucose-6-phosphatase(G-6-Pase) in the hexane and water fractions treated rats were significantly decreased compared to those of the STZ control group. Whereas the activity of hepatic glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G-6-PDH) was significantly increased in the hexane and water fractions treated rats. In conclusion, these results indicated that the hexane and water fractions of LJ were effective for the antidiabetes in the STZ-induced diabetic rats.
This study was conducted to investigate the contents of residual solvents and mineral components(11 kinds) in ginseng extracts with different extracting conditions(5 types) and commercial ginseng extract products(domestic, imported). Fine root was extracted with solution having various ethanol concentration after hexane treatment. Among 5 type extracts, residual solvent(hexane) was detected ginseng extracts treated ethanol mixed with hexane. But extracts that dried after soaked in hexane wasn't detected hexane. Mineral components(Al, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn) were detected in fine root and 5 types of extracts. The contents of mineral components between fine root and extracts with various extracting conditions were similar, however, extracts that dried after soaked in hexane showed the lower amount in Al, Fe, Pb than the others. In comparison with commercial ginseng ex-tract products(domestic, imported), the distribution pattern of mineral was similar but the contents were a little different.
In this study, the 4-week oral toxicity and anti-cancer activity of the hexane layer of Melia azedarach L. var. japonica Makino's bark extract were investigated. We carried out a hollow fiber (HF) assay and 28-day repeated toxicity study to confirm the anti-cancer effect and safety of the hexane layer. The HF assay was carried out using an A549 human adenocarcinoma cell via intraperitoneal (IP) site with or without cisplatin. In the result, the 200 mg/kg b.w of hexane layer with 4 mg/kg b.w of cisplatin treated group, showed the highest cytotoxicity aginst A549 carcinoma cells. For the 28-day repeated toxicity study, 6 groups of 10 male and female mice were given by gavage 200, 100, or 50 mg/kg b.w hexane layer with or without 4 mg/kg b.w of cisplatin against body weight, and were then sacrificed for blood and tissue sampling. The subacute oral toxicity study in mice with doses of 200, 100, and 50 mg/kg b.w hexane layer showed no significant changes in body weight gain and general behavior. The cisplatin-treated group significantly decreased in body weight compared to the control group but regained weight with 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w of hexane layer. The biochemical analysis showed significant increase in several parameters (ALT, total billirubin, AST, creatinine, and BUN) in cisplatin-treated groups. However, in the group given a co-treatment of hexane layer (200 mg/kg b.w), levels of these parameters decreased. In hematological analysis, cisplatin induced the reduction of WBCs and neutrophils but co-treatment with hexane layer (100 and 200 mg/kg b.w) improved these toxicities caused by cisplatin. The histological profile of the livers showed eosinophilic cell foci in central vein and portal triad in cisplatin treated mice. These results show that hexane layer might have an anti-cancer activity and could improve the toxicity of cisplatin.

The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf was fractionated by various organic solvents, and their antimicrobial and antioxidative activities were investigated against several microorganisms. The ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf at two thousand $\mu\textrm{g}$ per disc showed 17~21mm inhibition zone against Gram postive and Gram negative bacteria. Among the various solvent fractions from ethanol extract of Quercus mongolica leaf, the hexane fraction showed the strongest antimicrobial activity. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexane fraction was 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Bacillus cereus, 250~500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Listeria monocytogenes, 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Also, the hexane and chloroform fraction had the similar antioxidative activity compared to that of butylated hydroxy toluene(BHT).
Water extract, and methanol extract, its chloroform and hexane fractions, and estragole from Agastache rugosa O. Kuntze were tested to find the inhibition effect on the growth of several microorganisms. The organisms used were Escherichia coli ATCC 1129, Staphylococcus aureus IAM 1011, Vibrio parahaemolyticus WP, Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Aspergillus oryzae KFCC 890, Aspergillus niger KCCM 11240. Water and methanol extracts at the concentration of 0.5%, and chloroform and hexane fraction at the concentration of 0.05% inhibited the growth of microorganisms from 1/5 to 2/3 of the control group. Estragole identified from the hexane faction as a major component, its authentic compound completely inhibited the growth of Vibrio parahaemolyticus completely at the concentration of 0.03%, and the other bacteria were at 0.05%.
This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant effect of 80% (v/v) ethanol extract from Chaenomelis Fructus (CF). Total flavonoids and total polyphenols in the extract were also measured spectrophotometrically. The extraction yield was 9.23g/100g CF. The extract was further fractionated by partition with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol, and water. The water fraction showed the highest extraction yield of all fractions. The n-hexane method and compared with the properties of the commerical antioxidant BHT. The activities of the n-hexane fraction were the highest of all fractions. In addition, there was strong positive correlation between antioxidant activities and levels of antioxidative compounds, such as flavonoid and polyphenols, in CF fractions, suggesting that these antioxidative compounds may contribute to the antioxidative effect of CF.

This study examined the effects of an extract of Dendropanax morbifera on blood pressure, Angiotensin II, Angiotensin Converting Enzyme, Aldosterone, and lipid levels of spontaneously hypertensive rats. The groups were as follows: Control group, Hypertension control group, Water extract treated group, Ethanol extract treated group, n- hexane fraction treated group, Ethyl acetate fraction treated group, n- butanol fraction treated group, and Water fraction treated group. The blood pressure, and Angiotensin II, and Angiotensin Converting Enzyme, and Aldosterone levels were lower in the Ethyl acetate fraction treated group than in the hypertension control group. The change in blood pressure was lower in the Water extract treated group, Ethyl acetate fraction treated group, Ethanol extract treated group, n- hexane fraction treated group, and n- butanol fraction treated group than the hypertension control group. The concentration of Angiotensin II was lower in the Ethyl acetate fraction treated group, Ethanol extract treated group, n- hexane fraction treated group, and n- butanol fraction treated group than the hypertension control group(p<0.05). The level of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme was lower in the Ethyl acetate fraction treated group, Ethanol extract treated group, n- hexane fraction treated group, and n- butanol fraction treated group than the hypertension control group. The concentration of Aldosterone was lower in the Ethyl acetate fraction treated group, and n- butanol fraction treated group than the hypertension control group(p<0.05). In addition, the concentration lower in the Water extract treated group, Ethanol extract treated group, n- hexane fraction treated group than the hypertension control group. Overall, the effect of the Dendropanax morbifera extracts might be useful as anti-hypertensive, and functional food agents.
The present study was carried out for research and development of natural antimicrobial from extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ against food borne bacteria. The hexane extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ at 250$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ per disc showed 15 ~ 20 mm inhibition zone against gram positive and gram negative barteria. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hexane extract was 250${\mu}g$/$m\ell$against Bacillus cereus, 250~500${\mu}g$/$m\ell$against Listeria monocytogenes, 500${\mu}g$/$m\ell$ against Staphylococcus aureus, Psedomonas aeruginosa. Observation by transmission electron microscope, showed that disruption of the cell wall assumed to be due to the bactericidal activity. In addition, the membrane integrity of the sensitive cells was disrupted by exposure to Stachys sieboldii MIQ extract on the D-$\beta$-galatosidase activity as substrate of O-nitrophenol-$\beta$-D-galacto-pyranoside. The hexane extract of Stachys sieboldii MIQ was very stable on the pH and thermal stability.
The aim of this study was to elucidate the anti-inflammatory activity of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) ethanolic extract fractions (CFEFs). Butanol fraction had the strongest antioxidant activity, and all CFEFs, except for chloroform fraction, partly inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitrite production in RAW 264.7 cells. In the cell-free system, hexane and butanol fractions chemically quenched nitric oxide (NO). In addition, the iNOS mRNA transcription was suppressed by ethanol extract and hexane fraction in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Taken together, the inhibitory effect of CFEFs on NO production from LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, might be due to both the chemical NO quenching activity and the suppression of iNOS mRNA transcription partially. The synthesis of prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$) was potently inhibited by ethanol extract to below basal label, and the transcription of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme involving in $PGE_2$ synthesis, was partially suppressed by ethanol extract and hexane fraction. Based on these results, CFEFs may be useful as an alternative medicine for the relief and retardation of immunological inflammatory responses through the reduction of inflammatory mediators, including NO and $PGE_2$ production.
Yongia sonchifolia Max. has been used as raw materials of traditional Kimchi and medicinal herb in Korea. This study was performed to investigate biologically active components in the plant. First, the writer carried out the experiment of antitumor screening test against Sarcoma-180A and the cytotoxic activity against Chinese hamster V-79 cells with methanol extract of the plant. And the aqueous solution of the extract from roots of Youngia sonchifolia Max. was partitioned into n-hexane. The concentrated extract of n-hexane layer was chromatographed on silica gel column and developed with n-hexane and ethylacetate. Two yellow elutes, on concentration, were recrystallized from ethylacetate, and the $R_f$ value of TLC of the crystal was 0.43. After analysis by $^{1}H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$ and MS to confirm the structure, the author could identify the compound as bauerenyl acetate, a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpene. The crystal was colorless plate and m.p. was $280{\sim}282^{\circ}C$.
