A rapid micropropagation protocol was established for Exacum travancoricum Bedd. The effect of two cytokinins viz. BA and kinetin were studied to evaluate the propagation of plants through nodal explants. MS medium supplemented with 13.32 ${\mu}M$ BA induced early bud break and subsequent production of multiple shoots. Rooting of shoots occurred when cultured on 1/2 strength MS medium supplemented with 14.7 ${\mu}M$ IBA. Rooted plants were acclimatized to greenhouse conditions. The propagated plants were transferred successfully to field with 65% success. As the plant was amenable to propagation in vitro, this can be employed as a tool for conservation of this critically endangered and endemic ornamental herb.
Adventitious multiple shoots were developed from leaf, petiole and internode explants of Geophila reniformis D. Don. on MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of $N^6$-benzylaminopurine (BAP) or Kinetin (KIN) alone or in combination with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Leaf showed maximum organogenetic potential, followed by petiole and internode. Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 22.22 $\mu{M}$ BAP and 4.57 $\mu{M}$ IAA induced maximum shoot buds from leaf explants. Internodal segments showed low potential of direct organogenesis. The regenerated shoots rooted the best in presence of 10.75 - 13.44 $\mu{M}$$\alpha$-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) along with 2.22 $\mu{M}$ BAP, and were successfully established in the field with a survival rate of 89.11%.

The study of health promoting and disease preventing compounds in food or by themselves, so called nutraceuticals or functional foods, has become a major field of research in food science. Natural flavor compounds are usually present in food, essential oils, spices, and herbs. These compounds can produce aroma, not only by themselves, but also in combination with other compounds. Today, however, greater interest is being paid to the health promoting properties of natural flavor substances rather than their flavoring properties. In fact, a number of naturally occurring flavor compounds that possess health promoting and disease preventing properties have been extensively studied and identified. The beneficial properties of natural volatile flavor compounds as well as non-volatile substances in spices and herbs discussed in this review include antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and immune enhancing activities.
Cnidium officinale is a perennial herb belonging to the family Umbelliferae. Its origin is China and is also distributed in Korea and Japan. In 2017, a phenomenon of browning and wilting of leaves was discovered in the cultivation field of the National Institute of Forest Science, Suwon, Korea. The pathogens isolated from plants were consistent with Fusarium solani as a result of morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first record of F. solani on C. officinale in Korea.

This study was conducted to analyze community structure and species composition of Pinus densiflora for. erecta Stand in Mt. Cheonchuk (653 m). Field survey was carried out from June to September in 2013. 74 plots (20×20 m) were set up, 5 herb layer plots (3×3 m) were constructed for each plot, and there, Diameter at Breast Heigh t(DBH), height, environmental factor, annual growth were measured. Vascular plants were surveyed as following; 66 family, 165 genus, 211 species, 2 sub species, 29 variety, 6 form 248 taxa. Results of cluster analysis for P. densiflora for. erecta forest, 3 communities were divided into; Quercus mongolica (P-1), Quercus variabilis (P-2) and Quercus aliena-Stephanandra incisa (P-3). There were significant environmental factors that organic layer, annual growth, CEC, total total nitrogen, organic matter and pH for each community. As a result of DCA, P-1 and P-2 were distributed large range of environmental factors but relatively limited in P-3. Distributions of herb layer were affected by sand, cation exchange capacity, silt and total nitrogen. Results of MRPP test for herb layer communities, it was significantly analyzed (A=0.003, P<0.008). Species diversity index was highly recorded in P-3 and influenced by cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, annual growth in consequence of NMS analysis.
Korean Ginseng is a medicinal herb which grows naturally in korea. an ancient country situated in north-eastern Asia. Its medical use was already well known to herb doctors in this region about five thousand years ago since the effectiveness of korean ginseng has been recognized through practical use for a long time. Objective : The purpose of this study is to expand our treatment field in oriental dermatology by understanding the patterns of outpatients who had visited the oriental hospitals located in Gangwon province. Methods : We studied 510 outpatients out of 2240 people from Sangji University Oriental Hospital(SUOH) and 333 outpatients out of 2030 people from Chuncheon Oriental Hospital(COH) from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009. We categorized the results by gender, age, disease types, residences, months and number of visiting times. Results : The results were as follows 1. Comparing the number of outpatients that had visited the hospital by gender in SUOH shows that female's visiting rate is 57% and male is 43%. In COH shows that female's visiting rate is 54% and male is 46%. 2. Most frequent visiting age group were 21-30 year-old group(30%) in SUOH and 11-20 year-old group(23%) in COH. 3. In regard to the monthly visiting period, January(13%) is the highest in SUOH and July(10%) is the highest in COH. 4. Regional distributions of the outpatients that had visited SUOH and COH show Wonju(73%) and Chuncheon(74%). 5. In terms of treatment methods, SUOH showed the external application(65%), herb medication(54%), and acupuncture(52%) while COH showed acupuncture(74%), the external application(69%), and herb medication(66%). 6. Visiting frequency of outpatients in SUOH showed that 1 time visiting cases were 51%. In COH case, 1 time visiting cases were 19%. 7. The most prevalent diseases were urticaria(15%), eczema(14%) acne(12%), and seborrheic dermatitis(11%) in SUOH and atopic dermatitis(27%), urticaria(20%), acne(16%), and psoriasis(10%) in COH. 8. Most outpatients had visited SUOH for 1 time(51%) and COH for over 11 times(32%) with the major 16 diseases. Conclusions : This study suggests that outpatients who had visited the department of oriental dermatology preferred to get a treatment for urticaria, eczema, atopic dermatitis and acne. Considering this aspect, it needs to improve current research to expand the oriental medical treatments further in dermatological field.
Silibinin, a natural flavonoid antioxidant isolated from extracts of the milk thistle herb, has recently been identified as having anti-hepatotoxic and anticancer properties. In this paper, we investigated the effects of silibinin on behavior and neuroplasticity in mice subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). After 5 consecutive weeks of CUMS, the mice were treated with silibinin (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg by oral gavage) for 3 consecutive weeks. The results showed that silibinin administration significantly alleviated the CUMS-induced depressive-like behavior, including the total number of squares crossed and the frequency of rearing in the open field test, the immobility time in the tail suspension test and the forced swimming test. Furthermore, silibinin treatment increased the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Our study provides new insight into the protective effects of silibinin on the depressive status of CUMS mice, specifically by improving neuroplasticity and neurotransmission.
Purpose: Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets within or on the surface of an ovary. Most cysts present little or no discomfort and are noncancerous and harmless. So non-surgical treatments with herbal medicine or acupuncture and moxa therapy are important and suitable in this pathology. But there are few RCT articles about ovarian cyst in Korean Medicine(KM) clinical and research field. Methods: To review treatment method and other research tendency about ovarian cyst in journals related with KM and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) through web-searching. Searching was done through web site #http://omis.ksucc.ac.kr# and pub-med(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez) with key words #ovarian cyst#, #TCM#, #herb#, #CAM#, and #acupuncture#. Results: Seven articles were searched in journals related with KM, then six of them were simple case report and the other one was about diagnosis for ovarian cyst and another gynecologic disease such as uterine myoma and infertility through the iris diagnosis. And two articles were searched in journals related with TCM, then one of them was simple case report but the other is RCT article. Conclusion: KM and TCM therapies have some beneficial effect to resolve cyst, but objective power as a evidence is weak in the viewpoint of EBM. So continuous clinical trials such as RCT and multi center trials are needed.
