  • In this paper, we compare and assess the performance of the standard 3- and 6-node MITC shell elements (Lee and Bathe 2004) with the recently developed MITC triangular elements (Lee et al. 2014, Jeon et al. 2014, Jun et al. 2018) which were based on the partitions of unity approximation, bubble node, or both. The convergence behavior of the shell elements are measured in well-known benchmark tests; four plane stress tests (mesh distortion test, cantilever beam, Cook's skew beam, and MacNeal beam), two plate tests (Morley's skew plate and circular plate), and six shell tests (curved beam, twisted beam, pinched cylinder, hemispherical shells with or without hole, and Scordelis-Lo roof). To precisely compare and evaluate the solution accuracy of the shell elements, different triangular mesh patterns and distorted element mesh are adopted in the benchmark problems. All shell finite elements considered pass the basic tests; namely, the isotropy, the patch, and the zero energy mode tests.

  • A General equation is developed for the efficiency of an integrating sphere with a nonuniform coating. The only assumptions are that the interior is a perfect sphere and that all areas reflect perfectly diffusely. The general equation are examined for the basic applications of integrating spheres as mixing mechanisms in hemispherical reflectance measurements and in absolute reflectance techniques.

  • The box capacitor structure with H5G-Si described here reliably achieves a cell capacitance of 28fF with a cell area of a 0.482f${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$ for 128Mbit DRAM. An H5G-Si formation technology with seeding method, which employs Si$_2$H$_{6}$ molecule irradiation and annealing, was applied for realizing 64Mbit and larger DRAMS. By using this technique, grain size controlled H5G-Si can be fabricated on in-situ phosphorous doped amorphous silicon electrodes. The HSG-Si fabrication technology achieves twice the storage capacitance with high reliability for the stacked capacitors.s.

  • Previous counter-current flow limitation (CCFL) and critical heat flux (CHF) studies included investigations on the inlet entrance, inclined channel and gap effects for the most part. In this study, the local CHF correlation was presented to be used in the numerical analysis for the 3 dimensional hemispherical geometry. Also, first-principle analyses were performed to determine the maximum heat removal capability from the debris through the gap that may be formed during a core melt accident. The maximum heat removal capability by gap cooling can be applied in quantitatively assessing the severe accident management measures.

  • A design methodology is applied for manufacturing a disk-brake piston component. The design criteria are the limit drawing ratio and the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The rigid-plastic FEM has been applied to simulate the conventional four stage manufacturing processes, which include deep drawing and forging process. Simulation of one stage process from a selected stock to the final product shape is performed for generating information on additional requirements for metal flow. Two stage forming processes with different punch corner and nose geometries are also simulated to identify the possible best solutions. Finally, the best manufacturing process is selected, which is using a hemispherical punch int he deep drawing process.

  • This paper is concerned with spring back after sheet forming of bulk amorphous alloys in the super cooled liquid state. The temperature-dependence and strain-rate dependence of Newtonian/non-Newtonian viscosities as well as the stress overshoot/undershoot behavior of amorphous alloys are reflected in the thermo-mechanical Finite Element simulations. Hemispherical deep drawing operations are simulated for various forming conditions such as punch velocity, die comer radius, friction, blank holder force, clearance and initial funning temperature. Here, spring back by an instantaneous elastic unloading was followed by thermal deformation during cooling, and two modes of spring back are examined in detail. It could be concluded that the superior sheet formability of an amorphous alloy can be obtained by taking the proper forming conditions for loading/unloading.

  • A behavior of interface of cold forging tool coated by hard film is analyzed by FEM. The indentation of a hemispherical tool of SUJ2 in JIS coated by electroplated coating of chromium into a cylindrical workpiece of S25C in JIS is performed. The proposed constitutive equations are implemented by the non-linear springs model at the interface. Calculated results show that the maximum interfacial normal displacement is observed at an immediately forward from the lip of the indentation, whereas maximum interfacial tangential displacement is at the immediately backward of the lip of the indentation.

  • Rotylenchus arsenjevi are reported for the first time in Korea. The Korean species differs slightly by having a hemispherical lip region and a slightly shorter tail than the original description (c=38.2-68.7 vs 36-41). Male was founded firstly from Korea and described. Geocenamus adakensis were collected a second time from Korea at a different locality and habitat. The measurements were compared with original description and the firstly collected specimen in Korea.

  • In this study we investigated the shear and forming behavior of chain stitched multi-axial warp knitted fabric preform, so called non-crimp fabric (NCF). The picture frame test was performed to characterize the shear behavior of NCF and also provide material properties for the numerical simulation of its deformation behavior. The forming behavior of NCF with chain stitch were investigated using hemispherical forming tools. The experimental results show that processing conditions such as blank holder force (BHF) and preform shape are crucial to determining the forming behavior of NCF. For instance, an asymmetric formed shape, which is due to the stitches introduced to NCF, turns into a symmetric one as BHF increases. Furthermore the in-plane and out-of buckling (wrinkle), the severance of which were quantified using image processing method, decreases significantly as BHF increases.

  • High-speed machining is a very useful tool and one of the most effective rapid manufacturing processes. This study sought to produce various high-speed machining materials with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy. However, high-speed machining is not suitable for microscale thin-walled structures because the structure stiffness lacks the ability to resist the cutting force. This paper proposes a new method that is able to rapidly produce very thin-walled structures. This method consists of high-speed machining followed by filling. A strong work-holding force results from the solidification of the filling materials. Low-melting point metal alloys are used to minimize the thermal effects during phase changes and to hold the arbitrarily shaped thin-walled structures quickly during the high-speed machining. We demonstrate some applications, such as thin-walled cylinders and hemispherical shells, to verify the usefulness of this method and compare the analyzed dimensional accuracy of typical parts of the structures.
