This study was carried out to investigate the time distribution of single storms and to establish the model of storm patterns in korea. Rainfall recording charts collected from 42 metheorological stations covering the Korean peninsula were analyzed. A single storm was defined as a rain period seperated from preceding and succeeding rainfall by 6 hours and more. Among the defined single storms, 1199 storms exceeding total rainfall of 80 mm were qualified for the study. Storm patterns were cklassified by quartile classification method and the relationship between cummulative percent of rainfalls and cummulative storm time was established for each quartile storm group. Time distribution models for each stations were prepared through the various analytical and inferential procedures. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The percentile frequency of quartile storms for the first to the fourth quartile were 22.0%, 26.5%, 28.9% and 22.6%, respectively. The large variation of percentile frequency was show between the same quartile storms. The advanced type storm pattern was predominant in the west coastal type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with small total rainfalls. 3. The single storms with long storm durations tended to show delayed type storm patterns predominantly when compared to the single storms with short storm durations. 4. The percentile time distribution of quartile storms for 42 rin gaging stations was estimated. Large variations were observed between the percentiles of time distributions of different stations. 5. No significant differences were generally found between the time distribution of rainfalls with greater total rainfall and with less total rainfall. This fact suggests that the size of the total rainfall of single storms was not the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 6. Also, no significant difference were found between the time distribution of rainfalls with long duration and with short duration. The fact indicates that the storm duration was no the main factor affecting the time distribution of heavy storms. 7. In Korea, among all single storms, 39.0% show 80 to 100mm of total rainfall which stands for the mode of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls. The median value of rainfalls for all single storms from the 42 stations was 108mm. The shape of the frequency distribution of total rainfalls showed right skewed features. No significant differences were shown in the shape of distribution histograms for total rainfall of quartile storms. The mode of rainfalls for the advanced type quartile storms was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 39~43% for respective quartiles. For the delayed type quartile storms, the mode was 80~100mm and their frequencies were 36!38%. 8. In Korea, 29% of all single storms show 720 to 1080 minutes of storm durations which was the highest frequency in the frequency distribution of storm durations. The median of the storm duration for all single storms form 42 stations was 1026 minutes. The shape of the frequency distribution was right skewed feature. For the advanced type storms, the higher frequency of occurrence was shown by the single storms with short durations, whereas for the delayed type quartile storms, the higher frequency was shown gy the long duration single storms. 9. The total rainfall of single storms was positively correlated to storm durations in all the stations throughout the nation. This fact was also true for most of the quartile storms. 10. The third order polynomial regression models were established for estimating the time distribution of quartile storms at different stations. The model test by relative error method resulted good agreements between estimated and observed values with the relative error of less than 0.10 in average.

To account for the influence of heavy storm in Korea by climate change like global warming, the frequency analyses for annual maximum rainfall sequence in 12 rainfall gauge stations are carried out. In order to analyze the temporal change, the rainfall quantile of each station is estimated by the 30-yr data period being moved from 1954 to 1998 with 1-yr lag. Through the analysis for l00-yr rainfall quantile it has been shown that the recent heavy storms increase comparing with storms in the past. From the additional estimating of the rainfall quantile of each station by the 30-yr data period being cumulated from 1954 to 1998 with 1-yr, the change of the probable rainfall by including the heavy storm duration is realized. When the hydraulic structures are determined, it is important to select the data size and necessary to reestimate the flood prevention capacity in existing river systems.ystems.
The dynamics of water quality with the storm events were analyzed in a small reservoir for irrigation, Lake Wangkung. Water quality of the inflowing stream fluctuated seasonally with the variation of flow rate. Thermal stratification was consistent from April to October below 2 m depths and anoxic layer was developed below 2 m depth in summer. The unique feature of temperature showed that thermal stratification was disrupted by a heavy rain event during monsoon, but hypolimnetic hypoxia were reestablished after a few days. Phosphorus and nitrogen increased immediately following storm events. The marked increase may be due to the input of P-rich storm runoff from the watershed. Internal phosphorus loading can be one of the explanations for TP increases in summer. When there was a storm, total populations of phytoplankton and zooplankton was reduced immediately following the storm, indicating possible flushing of algae and zooplankton. After a lag period of low-density the plankton population bloomed to a peak again within five days after the storm. Turbid water in lake became clear again which coincided with the time of the phytoplankton buildup. The results demonstrate that water quality is regulated greatly by rainfall intensity in Lake Wangkung.
With heavy rainfall due to extreme weather causing increasing damage, the importance of urban flood forecasting continues to grow. To forecast urban flooding accurately and promptly, a sewer network and surface grid with appropriate detail are necessary. However, for urban areas with complex storm sewer networks and terrain structures, high-resolution grids and detailed networks can significantly prolong the analysis. Therefore, determining an appropriate level of network simplification and a suitable surface grid resolution is essential to secure the golden time for urban flood forecasting. In this study, InfoWorks ICM, a software program capable of 1D-2D coupled simulation, was used to examine urban flood forecasting performance for storm sewer networks with various levels of simplification and different surface grid resolutions. The inundation depth, inundation area, and simulation time were analyzed for each simplification level. Based on the analysis, the simulation time was reduced by up to 65% upon simplifying the storm sewer networks and by up to 96% depending on the surface grid resolution; further, the inundation area was overestimated as the grid resolution increased. This study provides insights into optimizing the simplification level and surface grid resolution for storm sewer networks to ensure efficient and accurate urban flood forecasting.
To use land more efficiently under urbanization trend, Kangwon Province often covers open channels of creeks and uses them as parking lots or roads. A covered open channel section tends to form a rectangular culvert. Therefore, a creek with covered open channels can function as a storm drain. At the time of light rainfall, there are no significant differences except water flowing pattern between a creek with a covered open channel and a creek without it. Recently, however, the frequent occurrence of heavy rainfalls limited at a small, definite area has become problematic. When the heavy rainfall causes the carrying capacity of a creek to be exceeded, the creek with covered open channel has a more serious problem than the creek without it has. Therefore, we made an interpretation of data and conducted hydraulic model experiment to come up with economical solution to this problem.

This study aims to find the characteristics of damage and states of natural disasters at Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do from 1985 to 2004. Using the data of Statistical yearbook of calamities issued by the National Emergency Management Agency and Annual Climatological Report issued by the Korea Meteorological Administration. we have analyzed the cause, elements, and vulnerable regions for natural disasters. Major causes of natural disaster at Gimhae are four, such as a heavy rain, heavy rain typhoon, typhoon, storm snow, and storm. The cause of disaster recorded the most amount of damage is typhoon. The areas of Hallim-myeon, Sangdong-myeon, and Saengnim-myeon are classified the vulnerable region for the natural disasters in Gimhae. Therefore, it seems necessary to build natural disaster mitigation plan each cause of disaster to control water resources and to reduce damage for these areas.
This paper begins by analyzing cable vibrations due to external excitations and their effects on the overall dynamic behavior of cable-stayed bridges. It is concluded that if the natural frequency of a cable approaches any natural frequency of the bridge, the cable loses its rigidity and functionality. The results of this analysis explain the phenomenon that occurred on the Dubrovnik Bridge in Croatia during a storm and measures for its retrofit. A field test was conducted before the bridge was opened to traffic. It was concluded: "The Bridge excited unpleasant transverse superstructure vibration with the frequency of approximately 0.470 Hz. Hence, it seems possible that a pair of stays vibrating in phase may excite deck vibrations". Soon after this Bridge opened, a storm dumped heavy damp snow in the area, causing the six longest cable stay pairs of the main span to undergo large-amplitude vibrations, and the superstructure underwent considerable displacements in combined torsion-sway and bending modes. This necessitated rehabilitation measures for the Bridge including devices to suppress the large-amplitude vibrations of cables. The rehabilitation and monitoring of the Bridge are also presented here.
Recently, the intensity and frequency of typhoons have been on the increase due to unusual weather phenomena and climate change. In particular, on September 13, 2003, typhoon MAEMI (0314) caused heavy damage in the provinces of Busan and Gyongnam, but also provided an opportunity to perform a variety of studies on storm surge. According to investigation reports on the damage resulting from typhoon MAEMI, the areas where coastal inundation occurred were located in reclaimed land under coastal development. In this study, through an image data analysis of historic and present day typhoons affecting Masan, we found that the inundation damage areas corresponded to reclaimed lands. Therefore, using the area around Busan, including the southeastern coast of Korea where typhoons lead to an increased storm surge risk, we performed a storm surge/inundation simulation, and examined the inundation effect on reclaimed land due to the intensified typhoons predicted for the future by climate change scenarios.
After lasting heavy storm, the overfow from the top of soil saving dam may follow if the outlet is not precisely designed and it causes great damages as a result. Therefore, the peak rate of flood must be premeditated at the time of dam construction and many kinds of erosion control measures should also be constructed to protect against the effects of oveflow causing the damages. In this paper, the daily maximum amounts of precipitation from 1904 to 1972 are used as samples of this statistical analysis for the previous purpose and studying local ranges are limited the number of areas to two; Pusan and Mokpo area, because other areas can not give the data of more than 69 years. Normal distribution, as follows, is used for this statistical study. $$P(X)=\int_{x}^{{\infty}}f(x)dx$$ x: daily maximum amount X: maximum of x P(X): probability to exceed X value The estimates, which are the resultants of statistical analysis, can be locally compared with the real values (daily maximum amounts) by diagram, whether the former truly coincides with the latter. As a result, statistical method canot be used for the premeditation of the amount as well as timing of heavy storms because the estimates donot coincide with the real values in this analysis.

Due to unusual climate change and global warming, drought and flood happen frequently not only in Korea but also in all over the world. It leads to the serious damages and injuries in urban areas as well as rural areas. Since the concentration time is short and the flood flows increase urgently in urban stream basin, the chances of damages become large once heavy storm occurs. A decision support system for flood forecasting and warning in urban stream is developed as an alternative to alleviate the damages from heavy storm. It consists of model base management system based on ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System), database management system with real time data building capability and user friendly dialog generation and management system. Applying the system to the Tanceon river basin, it can forecast and warn the stream flows from the heavy storm in real time and alleviate the damages.
