  • Glass fiber reinforced PET (Poly-Ethylene-Terephthalate) matrix composite was manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages. The optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content, tensile, interlaminar shear, and impact properties. A tensile test was attempted to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite. It is found that the level of crystallinity and microstructure affects on the tensile properties substantially.

  • Most Korean houses are heated by the Ondol heating system. There has been, however, no reasonable design procedure availabe yet for the system. The conventional design should be improved to have auniform floor surface. temperature distribution and to have a high thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiencies of the ondol were defined and the method of experimentation was studied. An experiment, using a life-size model which was well insulated, was performed to observe the variation in thermal efficiency as the length of fuel burning time was varied.

  • The purpose of this study was to make clear the indoor environmental efficiency of front balcony 'in apartment houses during winter. The field measurements of indoor environmental elements were carried out at an ordinary house with an existing front balcony and a house renovated the front balcony into the living room. The measurements in two-subject houses were taken on simultaneously the 20$^{th}$ ${\sim}$ 21$^{th}$ of January 2003. As results, the averages indoor temperature in the ordinary house and the renovated house were same as 23.6${\circ}$C, and the averages globe temperature in two houses were same as 23.7${\circ}$C. But, estimated heating time of the renovated house was longer than that of the ordinary house. The daily ranges of indoor temperature and globe temperature in the renovated house were wider than the ordinary house. The daily ranges of indoor temperature and globe temperature in the renovated house was longer than that of the ordinary house. The uniformity ratio range of daylight in the ordinary house were calculated at 1/3.4${\sim}$1/6.2, but those of the renovated house were 1/6${\sim}$1/16.2. Therefore. it was found that indoor temperature, globe temperature and uniformity ratio of daylight in the ordinary house maintained more constant than the renovated house by green house effect and earning effect of front balcony.

  • The ageing behavior of Cu-bearing HSLA steels was studied by using Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), Transmission electron microscopy and hardness tester. Two heat evolution peaks were observed during DSC scans over the temperature range of 25~590$^{\circ}C$ at a heating rate of 5$^{\circ}C$/min. The peaks appeared in low (241∼319$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-A, 224∼310$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-B) and high temperature (514∼590$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-A, 451∼558$^{\circ}C$ : HSLA-B) are attributed to the formation of coherent Cu-clusters and noncoherent $\varepsilon$-Cu phase, respectively. It was confirmed that as ageing proceeds, the coherent bcc Cu-clusters transform to noncoherent fcc $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. In the case of the ageing to peak hardness at 300$^{\circ}C$ and 400$^{\circ}C$, the coherent Cu-clusters contributed to the hardening. As ageing time and temperature increase over peak hardness, noncoherent $\varepsilon$-Cu are formed and hardness decreases.

  • Ubiquitous sensor network (USN) based on ZigBee communication protocol has been used in various application fields, such as home-network, intelligent building and machine, logistics, environmental monitoring, military field, security field and etc. The ZigBee is targeted at radio-frequency application that require a low data rate, long battery life and secure network. Especially, the USN system can be applied efficiently to building-indoor where the complex geometry is adopted. In this study, all 90 points of railway cabin indoor were monitored for temperature and humidity using USN technology. All sensors were pre/post-calibrated and the temperature/humidity change were analyzed in a railway cabin in real-time. The results would be useful to develop the cabin heating, ventilating and air conditing (HVAC) system to meet all passengers' thermal comfort regardless of their seat position.

  • Identifying characteristics of heating and cooling systems requires estimation of thermal load of specific time interval, especially in cases that its system is operated intermittently, by using thermal storage, of in a partial load condition. Estimating the thermal load, however, needs to forecast hourly weather data variation. Hence, this paper attempts to examine characteristics of hourly ourdoor temperature variation as a preliminary research for the mathematical modeling of the hourly weather variation. Speculating characteristics of daily minimum and maximum temperature occurances, hourly outdoor temperature variation, and daily temperature differences in the increasing range ($07h{\sim}15h$) and decreasing range($15h{\sim}07h$), we were able to analyze changing patterns of daily temperature differences in each range in terms of daily solar amount, cloud ratio, and other weather data. Results from the multiple regression analysis enables us to conclude that daily differences in the increasing range are strongly affected last night temperature itself while the other range's differences are influenced by many weather data, which are solar amount, the variation of cloud, and the maximum temperature of the previous day.

  • To increase the efficiency of an applicator during microwave hyperthermia therapy, first, the length from the antenna end to a slot is varied to get the optimal matching of the characteristic impedance at the frequency of 2.45 GHz. Using the electric and thermal constants of biological tissue, we compose a phantom to calculate temperature increment as well as the resonance characteristics and the SAR distributions. The proposed 3-slot sleeve antenna inserted in an applicator plays an effective role in increasing the therapy size in the view of heating performance as electromagnetic energy tends to concentrate on not feed point direction but treatment area. The SAR is then used in combination with a finite difference heat transfer equation to determine the temperature distribution. Also, in order to shorten treatment time and increase therapy size, a square-array structure is suggested and analyzed.

  • A various aseptic packaged cooked rice prepared In Korean rice was developed for extending shelf-life at room temperature. Data of proximate composition showed no significant difference between cultivars except moisture of cooked rice. The optimal condition of added water content for aseptic packaged cooked rice was 1.3 times of rice while 1.5 times for cooked rice and microwave heating. Hardeness of cooked rice was decreased in order of Dongjin, Odae, Chuchung, Kyaehwa, Ilpoom. Sensory evaluation results showed that Ilpoom had a best result while Odae for storage time (7 days).

  • Temperature distribution of thick plate during welding was investigated. Applied weldng process was shielded metal arc welding which was known as one of the most utilized processes in fabrication fields. Heating and cooling cycles were recorded by imploying high fidelity recorded and K-type thermocouple of 0.3mm in diameter. Both analytical and numerical calculations were preformed so as to verify the thermal cycle measurement. Results showed that the temperature of a welded points at given time could be predicted by the theoretical calculations. It was considered that methods could be applied to real structural components with slight modification.

  • The direct brazing technology which could be used for the simplification of brazing process and the improvement of brazed joint quality was studied with $Al_2O_3$ and stainless steels. The brazing of $Al_2O_3$ to STS304 or STS430 was performed under different brazing conditions such as brazing filler metal, temperature, heating rate and brazing time. Microstructural observation and chemical analysis be SEM/EPAM were carried out to verify the quality of brazed joints. 4-point bending strength of brazed joints was also measured to find the optimal brazing conditions. The results showed that, in brazing of $Al_2O_3$, the mixed oxide layer resulted from the reaction between Ti in filler metal and oxide layer on the material surface to be brazed was found to be bery important for the joint quality. The width of oxide layer varied with the brazing conditions such as brazing time, heating rate and chemical composition of filler metals. The strength of brazed joints was more affected by the type of materials and their thermal properties than by brazing heat cycle.
