Recently, the usage of renewable energy system has been recommended because of the energy saving and depletion of fossil fuel. Especially, ground source heat pump system(GSHP) has a high efficiency by using annual stable ground temperature. Also, wood pellet is low cost and a high calorific value compared to fossil fuel. However, only small number of farms have applied renewable energy system to horticultural facility because of a high initial costs and uncertainty of its cost efficiency. In this study, in order to analyze the feasibility for the horticulture, TRNSYS simulation based on the standard horticultural facility was conducted in different weather and covering material conditions. Then, comparative feasibility analysis of each energy supplying system was conducted. As a result, we have found out that a high initial cost of renewable energy system was recovered by the economics of the energy cost. Due to the energy cost reduction, the payback periods were 10-11 years in the case of GSHP and 4-6 years in the case of wood pellet boiler.
An engine cooling system affects overall performances of an engine which has been recently requested higher power in more confined engine room. The design of efficient cooling system demands a great effort to effectively correlate with each components, such as water jacket, radiator, coolant pump, cooling fan, etc. Thus, the aim of this study is to provide the design tool of the cooling system in the early design stage by enabling for the designer to accurately predict the engine cooling performances. This user-friendly design tool has various ways to assemble each components and control the running condition with related database. The present design tool was simulated and compared with experimental data. As a result, the inlet and outlet temperature of the radiator agree very well with experiments. It was concluded that the present design tool could be effectively used for the design of the engine cooling system.
Ice storage systems are used to shift the peak load in day time into night time in summer. This paper describes a system simulation of partial ice storage system composed of an encapsulated ice storage tank, a screw compressor chiller, a heat exchanger, and a brine pump. For the system simulation, a one-dimensional model of ice storage tank is developed and validated by comparison with the performance data from measurements of an ice storage tank installed at a building. The control strategies considered in this study are chiller priority and storage priority being used commercially. The system is simulated with design cooling load of 600 RT peak load in design day and with off-design day cooling load, and the electric energy costs of the two control strategies for the same system size are compared. As a result of calculation, the energy consumption in a week for storage priority is higher than that for chiller priority control. However due to lower cost of night electric charge rate, energy cost for storage priority control is lower than chiller priority.
Water electrolysis technology, which generates hydrogen using renewable energy resources, has recently attracted great attention. Especially, the polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis system has several advantages over other water electrolysis technologies, such as high efficiency, low operating temperature, and optimal operating point. Since research that analyzes performance characteristics using test bench have high cost and long test time, however, model based approach is very important. Therefore, in this study, a system model for water electrolysis dynamics of a polymer electrolyte membrane was developed based on MATLAB/Simulink®. The water electrolysis system developed in this study can take into account the heat and mass transfer characteristics in the cell with the load variation. In particular, the performance of the system according to the stack temperature control can be analyzed and evaluated. As a result, the developed water electrolysis system can analyze water pump dynamics and hydrogen generation according to temperature dynamics by reflecting the dynamics of temperature.
The heat transfer characteristics of ice storage system of falling film type using sprial coil is investigated. The experimental facilities consisted of a water tank, spiral coils located above the tank, an upper water distributor, and a circulating water pump. Water is distributed uniformally over the spiral coils and it forms falling thin films. In the process of freezing, ice is formed on outside of the spiral coils through recirculation of tank water. In the process of melting, ice is melted with return water from the heat load, while the water is chilled again and drops into the tank. The results of falling film type of ice thermal storage system are as follows. The highly efficient shower flowrates for icing is near $3{\ell}/min$. Icing rates on spiral coils is rosed while brine flowrates is increased. Lower brine temperature is not only increased freezing rates but. also become higher total icing weight and overall heat transfer coefficient. Smaller shower flowrates is obtained lower water temperature on outlet for a long time. The amounts of quantity can be detected more accurately by measuring storage tank weight.
Experimental results for performance characteristics of small $NH_3$ absorption chiller/ heater are presented. The apparatus consists of 7RT water-cooled absorption system, solution pump, boiler, cooling tower and peripheral devices. The effect of experimental parameters, such as refrigerant mass flow rate, solution mass flow rate and cooling water temperature have been investigated in view of the system performance. The capacity of each heat exchanger increased as refrigerant mass flow rate increased in cooling mode. Also, a cooling capacity increased as a strong solution mass flow rate increased. The cooling and heating COP show 0.5, 1.5 regardless of refrigerant mass flow rate, respectively. The results focus on the evaluation for performance characteristics of system with respect to variation of refrigerant mass flow rate under standard design conditions.
Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The configure type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for in-situ determination of design data for Standing Column Well apply. The main purpose has been to determine in-situ values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a sub-circulation pump, a boiler, temperature sensors, flow meter and a data logger for recording the temperature and circulation fluid flow data. A constant heating power is injected into the SCW through the test rig and the resulting temperature change in the SCW is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective in-situ values of rock thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of SCW.
