  • High strength concrete increasingly used in various countries. Recently, great attetion is also paid to the high strength concrete in this country. To promote the actual application of high strength concrete, several series of high strength concrete have been made and applied to actual structures. The mechanical properties and the temperature rise due to generation of hydration heat have been also studied. The present study provides a firm base for the actual application of high strength concrete in the field.

  • Major deterioration in concrete structures are salt attack and carbonation. Especially severe problems due to carbonation occur in tile concrete structures of city, tunnel, underground structures. Cracks in concrete during service life including early age due to hydration heat and/or shrinkage accelerate the diffusion of concrete so that the deterioration is also accelerated. In this study, carbonation depths of both non-cracked concrete and cracked concrete are evaluated and weight change test and TGA are carried out. Through the tests, a relation between water-cement ratio and carbonation depth is derived and also carbonation increase rate is derived in the function of crack width.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of ternary blended cement concrete mixed with slag cement and fly ash on the compressive strength, the resistance to chloride ion penetration and reduction of hydration heat. Each performance of ternary blended cement concrete compared with binary blended cement concrete and ordinary portland cement concrete. As a result, it was concluded that ternary blended cement concrete is suitable to mass concrete under marine environment.

  • Concrete roof in In-Chon LNG tank #15~18 is a very important structure. Precise control of quality is needed. This roof has 0.6~1.5m thickness, 36.23m radius, and, 12.7m height. So in this structure thermal crack caused by hydration heat should be controled. In this project belite cement plus LSP concrete is used. As a result of ambient temperature rising test and thermal analysis using FEM, this belite cement plus LSP concrete is expected to control the thermal crack well.

  • A converter slag has been heat-treated above melting point at reduced condition by cokes. As the result, most iron was separated. To make hydraulic compounds, calcium oxide was added to the reduced converter slag and the mixtures were sintered. This modified converter slag clinker mainly contained tricalcium silicate and calcium aluminates, and have a great potential to be a good hydraulic cement. The hydrates of the hydraulic compounds and gypsum with and without granulated slags, were mainly C-S-H, ettringite, calcium monosulfoaluminate hydrate, calcium aluminate hydrate, and $Ca(OH)_2$

  • Despite provision of drinking water as the most common method of occupational heat stress prevention, there remains confusion in hydration messaging to workers. During work site interactions in a hot and humid climate, workers commonly report being informed to consume tepid fluids to accelerate rehydration. When questioned on the evidence supporting such advice, workers typically cite that fluid absorption is delayed by ingestion of chilled beverages. Presumably, delayed absorption would be a product of fluid delivery from the gut to the intestines, otherwise known as gastric emptying. Regulation of gastric emptying is multifactorial, with gastric volume and beverage energy density the primary factors. If gastric emptying is temperature dependent, the impact of cooling is modest in both magnitude and duration (${\leq}5$ minutes) due to the warming of fluids upon ingestion, particularly where workers have elevated core temperature. Given that chilled beverages are most preferred by workers, and result in greater consumption than warm fluids during and following physical activity, the resultant increased consumption of chilled fluids would promote gastric emptying through superior gastric volume. Hence, advising workers to avoid cool/cold fluids during rehydration appears to be a misinterpretation of the research. More appropriate messaging to workers would include the thermal benefits of cool/cold fluid consumption in hot and humid conditions, thereby promoting autonomy to trial chilled beverages and determine personal preference. In doing so, temperature-based palatability would be maximized and increase the likelihood of workers maintaining or restoring hydration status during and after their work shift.
