Creep Characteristics Verification of FE Model for SnPb Solder (SnPb 솔더에 대한 유한요소모델의 크리프 특성 검증)

  • The heat sink system for a main board in a network server computer is built on printed circuit board by an anchor structure, mounted by eutectic SnPb solder. The solder creeping is caused by a constant high temperature condition in the computer and it eventually makes fatal failures. The FE model is used to calculate the stress and predict the life of soldered anchor in the computer. In the model, Anand constitutive equation is employed to simulate creep characteristics of solder. The creep test is conducted to verify and calibrate the solder model. A special jig is designed to mitigate the flexure of printed circuit board and to get the creep deformation of solder only in the test. Test results are compared with analysis and calibration is conducted on Anand model's constants. Precise life prediction of soldered anchor in creep condition can be performed by this model.

  • The fracture toughness for the LBB analysis of piping is generally determined by the J-integral according to ASTM E1820. However, since this evaluates a base metal, the fracture toughness for narrow gap welding can be differently than the real value. This study evaluated the plastic  factor of the narrow gap welding part of a nuclear piping with SA508 Cl.1a and SA312 TP316. Also, it performed the fracture toughness test for the narrow gap welding part and applied the new plastic $\eta$ factor equation by Huh, et al. and then compared the results with those according with the ASTM standard.

Evaluation of Critical Flow Function by Using Helmholtz Free Energy for Natural Gas Flow Measurement (천연가스 유량 측정에서 헬름홀츠 자유에너지를 이용한 임계유동함수 계산)

  • This study aimed to calculate the CFFs (critical flow functions) of a sonic nozzle bank with a 12-nozzle package within 1 s. Toward this end, the Helmholtz free energy of natural gas was formulated by using the AGA8-dc equation of state in a form without integral terms, and thereafter, thermodynamic properties such as the enthalpy, entropy, speed of sound, and heat capacity, which are used in CFF calculation, were derived in analytical form. As a result, the calculation time of CFFs was improved from 6.7 s in a previous study to 0.6 s per 12-nozzle package and kept almost constant regardless of the number of components in natural gas. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the calculated CFF values were in agreement with the results of a CFF international comparison test carried out under ISO management in 1998-1999.

Char Oxidation Characteristics of High Ash Coal in Drop Tube Furnace (고회분탄의 촤 산화 반응 특성 연구)

  • The char oxidation characteristics of high ash coal were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from 900 to $1300^{\circ}C$) for 4 types of coals (Gunvor, Glencore, Noble, and ECM) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace (DTF). The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO and $CO_2$) using FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured using the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for high ash coal char were calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that as the ash content increases, the particle temperature and area reactivity decreases. This is because in high ash coal, the large heat capacity of the ash, ash vaporization, and relatively low fixed carbon content of ash suppress combustibility during char oxidation. As a result, the higher ash content of coal leads to high activation energy.

  • The characteristics of the bubble adsorptive separation of CTAB(cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) and CuS precipitates was investigated. The Langmuir adsorption equation was adequate at very low concentration of CTAB, and the adsorption heat was determined from the batch analysis considering the bulk liquid accompanied between bubbles. The adsorption mechanism was explained with the collision adsorption between bubbles and precipitate particles. The optimum concentration ratio of (CTAB) to (CuS) for adsorptive separation was 0.1 and coincided with the ratio for the coagulation of particles. The collection efficiency was depended on pH and CTAB concentration but independent of the air flow rate, and the maximum efficiency was 0.0002. The selective separation of ZnS from the mixture of Cu-Cd-Zn sulfides was obtained by the bubble adsorption with CTAB.

  • Naringinase from Atpergillus nidulans was immobillized on DEAE-Sephadex A-25 and its characteristics were studied. The optimal conditions for the preparation of the immobilized enzyme were as follow; optimal pH, incubation time and the suitable amount of enzyme were 6.0, 30 min. and 110 units per gram of the dried ion exchage resin, respectively. The optimal pH of the immobilized enzyme was higher than that of the native enzyme. The optimal temperature increased from 4$0^{\circ}C$ to 5$0^{\circ}C$. The heat and pH stability of the immobillized enzyme were better than those of the native enzyme. No significant difference in the Michaelis constant was detected. Activation energy of the immobilized enzyme was 7.96 Kcal/mole, and the apparent Michaelis rate equation was used to describe the action of this material. The degree of hydrolysis was dependant on the flow rate at low rate of perfusion through the column. As the flow rate increased, the value of the apparent Km decreased.

  • In this study, gross heating value(GHV), density, vapor pressure and heat capacity of natural gas were estimated and their experimental data were compared with calculated ones, SRK method. A new alpha function was used to predict the vapor pressures of pure component of the natural gas constituents well instead of calculating vapor pressures with acentric factors. And binary adjustable parameters were determined by regressing binary vapor-liquid equilibria data. Through this study, our results showed good agreements with experimental data.

The Formation and Crystallization of Amorphous Ti50Cu50Ni20Al10 Powder Prepared by High-Energy Ball Milling

  • Amorphization and crystallization behaviors of $Ti_{50}Cu_{50}Ni_{20}Al_{10}$ powders during high-energy ball milling and subsequent heat treatment were studied. Full amorphization obtained after milling for 30 h was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope. The morphology of powders prepared using different milling times was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscope. The powders developed a fine, layered, homogeneous structure with prolonged milling. The crystallization behavior showed that the glass transition, $T_g$, onset crystallization, $T_x$, and super cooled liquid range ${\Delta}T=T_x-T_g$ were 691,771 and 80 K, respectively. The isothermal transformation kinetics was analyzed by the John-Mehn-Avrami equation. The Avrami exponent was close to 2.5, which corresponds to the transformation process with a diffusion-controlled type at nearly constant nucleation rate. The activation energy of crystallization for the alloy in the isothermal annealing process calculated using an Arrhenius plot was 345 kJ/mol.

  • In non-destructive evaluation of free acid content in apples by near- infrared spectroscopy(NIRS), browning and heat treatment of squeezed apple juice affected to the accuracy but titrable alkali concentration did not. The free acid content in apples after harvest was able to determine using different apples in harvest time for calibration making. The result of MLR, multiple correlation coefficient(R) was 0.77 and standard error of prediction(SEP) was 0.03%. The free acid content in apples during storage was able to determine using calibration equation established with stored apples, R was 0.90 and SEP was ca. 0.04%. The prediction accuracy by LAIR was not sufficient for use of quantitative analysis of free acid content in apple, but classification of law and high level in acid content was supposed to be applicable.

Predicting the Frequency of Combustion Instability Using the Measured Reflection Coefficient through Acoustic Excitation

  • In this study, the reflection coefficient (RC) and the flame transfer function (FTF) were measured by applying acoustic excitation to a duct-type model combustor and were used to predict the frequency of the combustion instability (CI). The RC is a value that varies with the excitation frequency and the geometry of the combustor as well as other factors. Therefore, in this study, an experimentally measured RC was used to improve the accuracy of prediction in the cases of 25% and 75% hydrogen in a mixture of hydrogen and methane as a fuel. When the measured RCs were used, an unstable condition was correctly predicted, which had not been predicted when the RCs had been assumed to be a certain value. The reason why the CI occurred at a specific frequency was also examined by comparing the peak of the FTF with the resonance frequency, which was calculated using Helmholtz's resonator analysis and a resonance frequency equation. As the CI occurred owing to the interaction between the perturbation in the rate of heat release and that in the pressure, the CI was frequent when the peak of the FTF was close to the resonance frequency such that constructive interference could occur.
