Pyroprocessing (or pyrometallurgy) is the way of extracting from materials subjected to high temperatures. Generally, this process has a high energy consumption because of mass production and heating-up. To attain effective and efficient energy management, energetic analysis using 0-dimensional model is usually conducted. However, this model can lead to a misunderstanding about energy evaluation due to many assumptions and limitations. In this study, heat & mass balance using 0-dimensional model was reviewed to systematize problems and considerations in general process energy evaluation.
Noise regulation of heavy construction machinery is getting stricter: 3 dB per every 4 year in European community. To meet this requirement many engineers have adopted the enclosing structures with thick absorbing materials and small opening, This increases internal temperature of the enclosure which have engine systems such as electric equipment that are vulnerable to heat, and engine block and muffler that can be regarded as heat sources. So noise control engineers have to consider a coupling problem: combining heat balance and noise reduction. This paper describes this approach by introducing simple heat transfer theory and SEA. The enclosing system of the loader whose enclosing structure consists of two rooms is investigated to show the validity of this method. The results represent that the simple heat transfer theory can be useful to estimate cooling performance when it is linked together by the back pressure theory in duct system. and the radiated noise can also be estimated by the SEA. Therefore a designer can use these approaches to define the opening ratio of an enclosure and the mass flow rate of air considering radiating noise.
The numerical analysis of energy and material balance, and plant performance has been carried out when applying the heavy residual oil instead of heavy oil to the existing heavy oil power station. The performance analysis model has been constructed for A heavy oil power station in Korea, and the modeling results were compared with the design data in order to ensure the validity of the model, and further compared with the plant operation data. With the heavy residual oil, the simulation gave 315 MW in power output, which is higher than that of the heavy oil combustion, but the plant efficiency turned out to be lower. The sensitivity analysis of heat rate for the changes in cooling water and ambient temperature, flue gas recirculation and power output has provided valuable information for the optimal operation of the power station.

The steady and dynamic process model for an internal reforming molten carbonate fuel cell power plant is discussed in this paper. The dominant thermal and chemical dynamic processes are modeled for the stack module and balance-of-plant, including cathode gas preparation, heat recovery, heat loss (Each heat loss amount for the stack and MBOP is obtained from real plant data) and fuel processing. Based on dynamic model and control demand, PID controllers are designed in the whole system. By applying these controllers we can obtain temperature balance of stack and control system depending on changing steam to carbon ratio, air feed amount, and transient condition.

A new theoretical critical heat flux (CHF) model was developed for the forced convective flow boiling at high pressure, high mass velocity, and low quality. The present model for an intermittent vapor blanket was basically derived from the sublayer dryout theory without including any empirical constant. The vapor blanket velocity was estimated by an axial force balance, and the thickness of vapor blanket was determined by a radial force balance for the Marangoni force and lift force. Based on the comparison of the predicted CHF with the experimental data taken from previous studies, the present CHF model showed satisfactory results with reasonable accuracy.
An one dimensional atmosphere-vegetation interaction model is developed to discuss of the effect of vegetation on heat flux in mesoscale planetary boundary layer. The canopy model was a coupled system of three balance equations of energy, moisture at ground surface and energy state of canopy with three independent variables of $T_f$(foliage temperature), $T_g$(ground temperature) and $q_g$(ground specific humidity). The model was verified by comparative study with OSUID(Oregon State University One Dimensional Model) proved in HYPEX-MOBHLY experiment. As the result, both vegetation and soil characteristics can be emphasized as an important factor iii the analysis of heat flux in the boundary layer. From the numerical experiments, following heat flux characteristics are clearly founded simulation. The larger shielding factor(vegetation) increase of $T_f$ while decrease $T_g$. because vegetation cut solar radiation to ground. Vegetation, the increase of roughness and resistance, increase of sensible heat flux in foliage while decrease the latent heat flux in the foliage.
Here we evaluated the effect of using water retentive pavement or WRP made from fly ash as material for main street in a real city block. We coupled computational fluid dynamics and pavement transport (CFD-PT) model to examine energy balance in the building canopies and ground surface. Two cases of 24 h unsteady analysis were simulated: case 1 where asphalt was used as the pavement material of all ground surfaces and case 2 where WRP was used as main street material. We aim to (1) predict diurnal variation in air temperature, wind speed, ground surface temperature and water content; and (2) compare ground surface energy fluxes. Using the coupled CFD-PT model it was proven that WRP as pavement material for main street can cause a decrease in ground surface temperature. The most significant decrease occurred at 1200 JST when solar radiation was most intense, surface temperature decreased by $13.8^{\circ}C$. This surface temperature decrease also led to cooling of air temperature at 1.5 m above street surface. During this time, air temperature in case 2 decreased by $0.28^{\circ}C$. As the radiation weakens from 1600 JST to 2000 JST, evaporative cooling had also been minimal. Shadow effect, higher albedo and lower thermal conductivity of WRP also contributed to surface temperature decrease. The cooling of ground surface eventually led to air temperature decrease. The degree of air temperature decrease was proportional to the surface temperature decrease. In terms of energy balance, WRP caused a maximum increase in latent heat flux by up to $255W/m^2$ and a decrease in sensible heat flux by up to $465W/m^2$.
A road surface temperature prediction model (UM-Road) using input data of the Unified Model (UM) output and road physical properties is developed and verified with the use of the observed data at road weather information system. The UM outputs of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, downward shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, precipitation and the road properties such as slope angles, albedo, thermal conductivity, heat capacity at maximum 7 depth are used. The net radiation is computed by a surface radiation energy balance, the ground heat flux at surface is estimated by a surface energy balance based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity, the ground heat transfer process is applied to predict the road surface temperature. If the observed road surface temperature exists, the simulated road surface temperature is corrected by mean bias during the last 24 hours. The developed UM-Road is verified using the observed data at road side for the period from 21 to 31 March 2013. It is found that the UM-Road simulates the diurnal trend and peak values of road surface temperature very well and the 50% (90%) of temperature difference lies within ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ (${\pm}2.5^{\circ}C$) except for precipitation case.
Perimeter zone is one of the weakest area in buildings and it makes an increase of heating and cooling loads, in addition to condensation or discomfort with cold-draft to residents in winter. Because of this, it needs to be reinforced by active systems. However, they use fossil fuel, and ultimately greenhouse effect is urged. Thus, we proposed BIPV system functioned as solar collector which can substitute active system. As an fundamental stage, heat balance equation in steady-state by Fortran was used not only, in winter for pre-heating effect and electric power capacity during the day, but also in summer, for the latter during the day and sky radiation effect during the night. Especially, we should have considered shading on PV by IES Suncast, since even a little bit of it makes the efficiency too low for the PV modules to work. As a result, in summer day, the PV panel should be tiled in 70 degrees to gain the most electric power. Moreover, we could verify that this model makes higher temperature and heat flux under 0.02 m/s. On the other hand, the PV had the high efficiency with high velocity because of cooling effect behind the PV. Therefore, we should regard the air current distribution later on.

Wet canopy evaporation ($E_{WC}$) has been recognized as a significant component of total evapotranspiration, especially in forests and therefore it is critical to accurately assess $E_{WC}$ to understand forest hydrological cycle. In this review, I focused on the measurement methods and evaluating the magnitudes of $E_{WC}$ at diverse forest types (e.g., deciduous, coniferous, mixed, and rain forests). I also present the general issues to be considered for $E_{WC}$ measurements. The commonly used measurement methods for $E_{WC}$ include the water balance, energy balance, and the Penman-Monteith (PM) methods. The magnitudes of $E_{WC}$ ranged from 5 to 54% of precipitation based on the literature review, showing a large variation even for a similar forest type possibly related to canopy structure, rainfall intensity, and other meteorological conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to draw a general conclusion on the contribution of $E_{WC}$ to evapotranspiration from a particular forest type. Errors can arise from the measurements of precipitation (due to varying wind effect) and throughfall (due to spatial variability caused by canopy structure) for water balance method, the measurements of sensible heat flux and heat storage for energy balance method, and the estimation of aerodynamic conductance and unaccounted sensible heat advection for the PM method. For a reliable estimation of $E_{WC}$, the combination of ecohydrological and micrometeorological methods is recommended.
