  • Comparison of the heat conduction into a trapezoidal fin and the heat loss from the fin by convection is made in this study Also, the ratio of heat loss from each surface to the total heat loss and the temperature distribution are analyzed using a 3-D analytical method. A trapezoidal fin whose tip height is half the root height is chosen as the model. The results show that the heat transfer rates from the tip and from both sides are comparable with each other as the non-dimensional width and length vary while the heat transfer rate from the bottom and top is dominant.

  • This article deals with one-dimension backward heat conduction problem (BHCP). A new approach based on least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) is proposed for obtaining their approximate solutions. The approximate solution is presented in closed form by means of LS-SVM, whose parameters are adjusted to minimize an appropriate error function. The approximate solution consists of two parts. The first part is a known function that satisfies initial and boundary conditions. The other is a product of two terms. One term is known function which has zero boundary and initial conditions, another term is unknown which is related to kernel functions. This method has been successfully tested on practical examples and has yielded higher accuracy and stable solutions.

  • A numerical investigation on the conduction-natural convection-surface radiation conjugate heat transfer in the enclosure having substrate and chips has been performed. A 2-dimensional simulation model is developed by considering heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation. The solutions to the equation of radiative transfer are obtained by the discrete ordinates method using S-4 quadrature. The effects of Rayleigh number and the substrate-fluid thermal conductivity ratio on the cooling of chip are analyzed. The result shows that radiation is the dominant heat transfer mode in the enclosure.

  • In this article we have presented a unique representation for interval arithmetic. The traditional interval arithmetic is transformed into crisp by symbolic parameterization. Then the proposed interval arithmetic is extended for fuzzy numbers and this fuzzy arithmetic is used as a tool for uncertain finite element method. In general, the fuzzy finite element converts the governing differential equations into fuzzy algebraic equations. Fuzzy algebraic equations either give a fuzzy eigenvalue problem or a fuzzy system of linear equations. The proposed methods have been used to solve a test problem namely heat conduction problem along with fuzzy finite element method to see the efficacy and powerfulness of the methodology. As such a coupled set of fuzzy linear equations are obtained. These coupled fuzzy linear equations have been solved by two techniques such as by fuzzy iteration method and fuzzy eigenvalue method. Obtained results are compared and it has seen that the proposed methods are reliable and may be applicable to other heat conduction problems too.

  • This paper is devoted to simplified Tikhonov regularization for two kinds of parabolic equations, i.e., a sideways parabolic equation, and a two-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem. The measured data are assumed to be known approximately. We concentrate on the convergence rates of the simplified Tikhonov approximation of u(x, t) and its derivative $u_x$(x, t) of sideways parabolic equations at 0 $\leq$ x < 1, and that of two-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem at 0 < x $\leq$ 1, respectively.

  • Analytic solutions of heat conduction during welding which were first found by Resenthal have some restrictions. One of these is that models to which analytic solutions can be applied must have simple geometric shape, and another is that quasi-stationary state must be created. On the other hand, computational methods developed recently with the aid of the computer can overcome these shortcomings, but the methods raise problems from economic point of view when they are applied to 3 dimensional problems. Taking account of these problems, a new method combinig the analytic method with the computational one is proposed. This method can be ued in weldments with complicated geometric shape in non-stationary state, but with the aid of the analytic method can reduce the computing time.

  • A numerical method for the solution of one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem is established and its performance is demonstrated with computational results. The present work introduces the maximum entropy method in order to build a robust formulation of the inverse problem. The maximum entropy method finds the solution that maximizes the entropy functional under given temperature measurement. The philosophy of the method is to seek the most likely inverse solution. The maximum entropy method converts the inverse problem to a non-linear constrained optimization problem of which constraint is the statistical consistency between the measured temperature and the estimated temperature. The successive quadratic programming facilitates the maximum entropy estimation. The gradient required fur the optimization procedure is provided by solving the adjoint problem. The characteristic feature of the maximum entropy method is discussed with the illustrated results. The presented results show considerable resolution enhancement and bias reduction in comparison with the conventional methods.

  • This study provides a solution method for the inverse heat conduction problem based on a combination of a public domain CAE (computer aided engineering) software and a commercial CAO (computer aided optimization) software. The solver system has been implemented without any in-house coding. The proposed method is simple to implement. Moreover, it can be easily reproduced.

  • Using materials with high thermal conductivity is a matter of great concern in the field of thermal management. In this study, we present our experimental results on an important physical property of carbon nanotube (CNT) films, two-dimensional thermal conductivity obtained by using an optical method based on Raman spectroscopy. We prepared four kinds of CNT films to investigate the effect of CNT type on heat spreading performance of films. This first comparative study using the optical method shows that the arc-discharge single-walled carbon nanotubes yield the best heat spreading film. And we observed thermal conductivity values of CNT films with various transmittances and found that the Raman method works as long as the sample is a transparent film. This study provides useful information on characterization of thermal conduction in transparent CNT films and could be an important step toward high-performance carbon-based heat spreading films.

  • An inverse problem is solved to determine the space-dependent thermal conductivity in one-dimensinoal time-dependent heat conduction medium with the data imposed and measured at the two end-points. The thermal conductivity is approximated as a linear combination of known functions with unknown coefficients and the unknowns are obtained by the governing and sensitivity equations using modified Newton-Raphson method. The estimated results are compared with exact thermal conductivities and it shows good agreements. This approach is expected to be used to estimate spatial composition of heat conduction medium.
