The purpose of this study is to analyze silver consumers' life style, and whether silver consumers ’ life style have an effect on purchase satisfaction and repurchase intention of the health functional foods. To this end, a survey was conducted from May 28 to June 20 in 2007, among silver consumer aged in over 50s, on their purchase experience of the health functional foods. The survey was conducted with 326 subjects, and the statistical analysis methods were frequency analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. According to the result of this study, First, the silver consumers' life style factors were determined to be health and leisure pursuit, material pursuit, family pursuit, and outgoing challenge pursuit. And purchase satisfaction factors of the health functional foods were determined to be taking after dosage and service, function and purchase, appearance of health functional foods. Second, silver consumers' family pursuit life style and outgoing challenge life style had an effect on taking and service satisfaction, appearance and products satisfaction of the health functional foods. Third, purchase satisfaction had an effect on repurchase intention of the health functional foods. Therefore, this study is significant in that it clarifies the relation of silver consumers' life style and purchase satisfaction and repurchase intention of the health functional foods.
The purpose of the study is to examine the demographic characteristics and socio-psychological factors affecting willingness to take health foods among elderly, which is to get the basic materials of educational program for helping their desirable intake of healthy food. The data were collected from 1,032 elderly subjects and analyzed by SPSS Windows Version 12.0. About forty-one percent of the respondents were taking health foods in the period of survey. The main reason of taking health foods was to maintain and improve their health. The elderly subjects were classified into three groups: (1) a group having willingness to take healthy food, (2) a group having unwillingness to take healthy food, and (3) a group having a wait-and-see attitude. According to the results of chi-square and analysis of one-way variance, there were significant differences among three groups in the variables of 'sex', 'age', 'educational level', 'marriage status', 'monthly allowance', 'eating habit', 'concerns about health', 'self -evaluation of health condition', 'self-evaluation of health condition compared to the same age', 'concerns about health foods', and 'awareness of health foods'. In addition, the result of multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that the factors affecting willingness to take health foods in the future are 'age', 'concerns about health', 'self-evaluation of health condition compared to the same age', 'awareness of health foods', and 'intake of health foods in the period of survey'.
This study examined health foods intakes and related variables among the middle aged(150 men and 159 women) in the Jeonbuk region. Health foods were classified into 4 groups including Chinese medicine(CM), toner foods(TF), vitamin or mineral supplements(VMS), and other manufactured health food supplements(MHFS). The number of people taking health foods were higher for those in their 50's than in their 40's. The consumption rate of TF in men was the highest among health foods, this result had significance. The reasons for taking health foods were recovery from fatigue, supplement of nutrients and making smooth body activity in general, but TF was used to increase of vigor. The consumption rate of health foods was a little different according to social-economic factors, namely, the consumption rate of CM was higher in people in rural than urban areas, those who graduated from middle school than university, blue color & self-employed as opposed to housewives and service workers, low level income than high level income, and Buddhism and no religion than Christian. The consumption rate had a correlation with the habits of smoking, alcohol drinking and exercise ; namely, the consumption rate of CM was higher than VMS and MHFS on smokers and alcohol drinkers. The more the frequency of exercise, the higher the consumption rate of TF, but the duration of the exercise was not correlated. This study suggests that middle aged people need nutritional education for the right recognition and selection of health foods and to consider the nature of each type of health foods.
This study compared the characteristics between intake and non-intake respondents of health foods, and analyzed the factors affecting the willingness to consume health foods, in order to provide the educational program for the desirable choice of health foods. The data were collected from 453 adults living in Busan and Gyeongnam through a self-administered questionnaire and were analyzed using SPSS Windows. Approximately 49% of the respondents consumed health foods at the time of survey. According to the results of chi-square and t tests, there were significant differences between the intake and non-intake respondents by variables, which included sex, age, educational level, marriage status, monthly household income, concerns about health, self-evaluation of health status, self-evaluation of health status compared to the same age, concerns about health foods, awareness of health foods, and internal health locus of control. In addition, the results of multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that the factors affecting willingness to consume health foods in the future were sex, educational level, marriage status, concerns about health and health foods, awareness of health foods, powerful others health locus of control, internal health locus of control, and current intake of health foods.

The purpose of this study was to identify the development trends and feasibility of health-oriented convenience foods in Korea for promoting health. Special objectives were to investigate characteristics of health-oriented convenience foods; to determine the factor affecting the sale of health-oriented convenience foods; to examine marketing strategies of the foodservice industry; and to provide feedback for the development plan. Questionnaires were developed in this study and mailed to 10 food companies in Korea and then telephone interviews were carried out. Also, marketing strategies of each industry are analyzed by the visit interview with food processing and marketing chargers. The survey was conducted between September 30 and October 30, 1997. The results of this study were summarized as following : The most popular health-oriented convenience foods were completely precooked type, pouch/PE bag packaging type, diet purpose, 100-300 gram size, and convenience store sales with regard to selling and developing health-oriented convenience foods. About factors affecting selling health-oriented convenience foods, the best contributors among factors were seasonality, convenience, and negative image for instant foods. For health-oriented convenience foods, the most important factor was the improvement of taste and quality. Adults should be the most promising customers for health-oriented convenience foods. Food companies must promote variety, taste, nutrition, convenience, price, and advertising of health-oriented convenience foods for the powerful marketing strategies in the future.
This study examined the level of reaction towards damage related to health foods and the factors affecting this reaction among the elderly. Data were collected from 269 elderly individuals living in Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Busan. Frequencies, chi-square tests, and a multinomial logistic regression analysis were performed using the SPSS v. 14.0 program. When asked about their reaction towards damage related to health foods, approximately 48% of the respondents answered 'no response', 34% answered 'private response', and 18% answered 'public response'. Multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that education level and awareness of health food price were significant factors influencing 'private response', and concerns about health foods and awareness of damage redemption were significant factors for 'public response'. These results imply that consumer education for elderly to prevent damage derived from the purchase and consumption of health foods is required.

To investigate male office workers' dietary habits and their perception and intake of health functional foods, 234 male employees were surveyed by questionnaire. The results were categorized into three age groups: under 35 years, 35 and 45 years, and over 45 years. The over 45 years group had significantly better dietary habits than the others (p<0.05). The most common reason for skipping breakfast was lack of time. Frequency of drinking alcohol was higher in the older group, where tiredness after drinking was lower in the younger group. The perception score of health functional foods was highest in the over 45 years group. Perception of health functional foods was more positive as the age of the groups increased (p<0.01). The number of health functional foods consumed, duration of intake, and beneficial health effects were higher in older groups. Although older people are more concerned about health than relatively younger people, they did not necessarily have reduced the amounts of smoking and drinking. Instead, they simply showed higher intakes of health functional foods to prevent and cure disease and improve their health. Therefore, older people need to receive education about their dietary and living habits instead of simply eating health functional foods. It is necessary to provide correct information about health functional foods by nutritional education.
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors influencing sales of health functional foods by door-to-door saleswomen. A total of 450 women who worked as door-to-door salespersons in Seoul were enrolled. The survey questionnaire was composed of five parts as follows: general characteristics, factors related with door-to-door sales process, task education, competency required for door-to-door salespersons, and customer relationship beliefs. The survey was conducted in October 2011. Finally, data on 302 subjects were statistically analyzed using the SPSS 17.0 package program. Reason for sales of health functional foods (p<0.01), time required for sales promotion (p<0.001), difficulties during sales of health functional foods (p<0.05), satisfaction of task education (p<0.01), and failure of salesperson's memory as problems of task education (p<0.01) were significantly associated with sales of health functional foods. However, means of sales promotion, frequency and time of task education, and competency required for door-to-door salespersons were not significantly related with sales of health functional foods. Customer relationship beliefs did not show significant association with sales of health functional foods either. In conclusion, certain factors were associated with sales of health functional foods by door-to-door saleswomen. These results provide an understanding for sales of door-to-door health functional foods and provide basic information for preparation of task education for health functional food saleswomen and marketing.
The purpose of this study is to reduce the side effect of functional health foods. The research is done by in-depth interview method. The nineteen officials who worked in local administration or KFDA(Korea Food & Drug Administration) were interviewed. The questions were asked regarding the current status of consumer reports related to functional health foods, the problems which officials perceived, and the regulations required to reduce the problems. The findings are as follows: 1) the consumers report the side effect of functional health foods to nongovernmental organization. 2) officials feel that the problems are the difficulty in finding the cause of the side effect, unjust sale tactics, deceptive and small-sized manufacturers. and the distorted consumer conception on functional health foods. 3) officials think that improvement on the regulations are required to reduce the problems caused by the side effects. It includes the indication of the ingredient's origin and warnings considering physical conditions, close cowork between administration and nongovernmental organization. introduction of sales license for functional health foods and the increase of the opportunity for consumers to get information and education on functional health foods.
Objectives: This study sought to assess the prevalence and duration of weight-control or health functional food use, associated weight-control behavior, perception, and knowledge among university students. Methods: The subjects were 442 university students in Cheonju, Korea, and data was collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Both χ2 and t-tests were conducted for categorical and mean comparisons. Results: An estimated 62.7% (female 69.0%, male 54.8%) had ever attempted weight-control. Among these, an estimated 59.2% of females and 38.9% of males had used weight-control or health functional foods with significant gender difference. The weight-control foods commonly used included chicken breast, protein powder, low-fat milk and soymilk, and meal replacement drinks, while garcinia cambogia extract and green tea extract were frequently used as health functional foods. One of 10 (10.3%) consumers of weight-control foods reported ≥ 7 months use, with less frequent long-term consumption of health functional foods (4.2%). The average degree of satisfaction was 3.24 ± 0.92 for weight-control foods and 2.72 ± 0.97 for health functional foods on a 5-point scale, meaning 'slightly satisfied' and 'slightly dissatisfied', respectively. Females or students with an experience of weight-control reported poorer perceptions of their health and body image as well as a higher need for weight control. Besides, both male and female subjects felt a high need for correct information regarding weight-control methods. Conclusions: Our results provide a better understanding of the characteristics associated with the use of weight-control or health functional foods among university students and will be useful in developing a nutrition education program by incorporating correct body image, knowledge, and practical yet desirable practices for weight control.
