  • Dietary pattern in relation to alcohol consumption was studied in 7,370 Korean adults aged 20 years and older in 1998 Koran National Health and Nutrition Survey in which 24 hour recall method was used for dietary survey, The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on food and nutrient intake among Koreans, Individual drinking data was collected by interview as a part of health behavior survey T est was adopted to between nutrient intake level and drinking status. Drinkers of both sexes showed less consumption of foods from vegetable origins than non-drinkers, Consequently,. They also had significantly less carbohydrate consumption then non-drinker. This result may suggest that diets of Korean drinkers is unbalanced in terms of low consumption of food from vegetable origin and carbohydrate, Nutrition education should focus on those issues to improve the nutritional status and prevent potential risk disease by unbalanced diet.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine effect of anxiety about climate change on life satisfaction and mediating effect of subjective health status between anxiety about climate change and life satisfaction among older persons. Methods: This study used data from Statistics Korea 2018 Social Survey and a total of 7,870 older persons aged 65 and over were selected for the analyses. Descriptive statistics was used to identify characteristics of study participants and correlation analysis was used to examine the associations among anxiety about climate change, subjective health status, and life satisfaction. Also, multiple regression analyses were performed to examine effect of anxiety about climate change on life satisfaction and mediating effect of subjective health status between anxiety about climate change and life satisfaction. Results: Study findings show that anxiety about climate change had significant effect on life satisfaction. A higher level of anxiety decreased the level of life satisfaction of the elderly. A higher level of anxiety about climate change also decreased the level of subjective health status. In addition, the effect of anxiety about climate change on life satisfaction was partially mediated by subjective health status. Conclusions: Findings of the study suggest that the needs of older population should be considered in designing policy and interventions on climate change.

  • This study examines individual determinants of hospital days in community-dwelling elders by estimating a linear structural equation model based upon Andersen's behavioral model. Data were collected through a national survey of elders in Korea in 1994. The subjects for this secondary data analysis were 1687 non-institutionalized elders aged 60 years or older. Except for the effect of age and gender on family help. the predisposing components had direct effects on the enabling components. Of the effects of the enabling components. family help had a direct effect on self-evaluated health; economic status had a direct effect on chronic disease and self-evaluated health; and access had a direct effect on chronic disease. functional health status and self-evaluated health. Of the enabling components. residence and family help directly affected hospital days. Self-evaluated health revealed the greatest direct effect on hospital days followed by functional health. Overall. the effects of the predisposing components and the enabling components on hospital days were not prominent. Since the model explained only $4\%$ of the variance in hospital days. the magnitude of the effect of the need components cannot be judged in terms of equity of distribution of health services. In particular. the effect of family help in the model reveals the importance of family support in health management of elders. The implications of these analyses for improving the proposed model of hospital days were discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem and social support on the relationship between anxiety and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the elderly. Methods: The Korea adult psycho-social anxiety survey data were collected from August to September 2015 by the Korea Institute for Health. The subjects were 1,035 elderly people who were aged 65 or older at the time of the data survey. The data were analyzed by t-test, chi-square, Pearson correlation coefficient, and parallel redundant mediated model for PROCESS macro using SPSS 23.0. Results: They scored an average of 37.93±7.58 for anxiety, 28.59±3.45 for self-esteem, 17.25±4.11 for social support, and 0.88±0.11 for HRQoL. The direct effect of anxiety on HRQoL and the indirect effect of anxiety mediated with self-esteem and social support about HRQoL were statistically significant. Conclusion: These results indicate that in order to increase the HRQoL of the elderly, it is necessary to develop an intervention program that focuses not only on reducing anxiety but also on improving self-esteem and social support.

Methods: The subjects of the study were 395 nurses who were wage workers among KWCS (Korean Working Conditions Survey) respondents in 2014. The work environments were measured by the KWCS questionnaire. Results: 48.5% of the 395 nurses had health problems. The prevalence of musculoskeletal diseases (34.7%) was the highest among all health problems. The ergonomic work environment was significantly related to musculoskeletal disorders, headache and eye strain, and fatigue. In addition, the increase in work-individual interface area was significantly related to fatigue. Conclusion: The work environment of nurses affects health problems. It is therefore important to develop strategies that improve the health problems of nurses by reducing ergonomic and psycho-social risk factors.

  • Objectives: Thiamine is thought to modify sleeping patterns, while alcohol use diminishes internal thiamine levels. We investigated the association between thiamine intake and sleep duration and explored possible heterogeneity in the effect according to alcohol use. Methods: In total, 15 384 participants aged 19-64 were obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2012-2016. Nutrient intake, including thiamine, was measured using a food frequency questionnaire. Sleep duration was measured by a self-reported questionnaire. The highest thiamine intake quartile was set as the reference group. Participants were divided into 3 groups, with 7-8 hours of daily sleep as a reference group and those who slept more or less than that as "oversleeping" and "insufficient sleeping," respectively. Multivariate logistic regression was used, adjusting for socioeconomic, medical, and nutritional factors. Additionally, participants were stratified according to high-risk alcohol use defined by the World Health Organization standards on alcohol use. Results: Low thiamine intake was associated with oversleeping (Q3: odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.86 to 1.32; Q2: OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 0.99 to 1.55; Q1: OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.16 to 1.91) and showed a significant trend for higher ORs at lower intake levels (p-trend<0.001). The effect was stronger in the high-risk alcohol use group (Q1: OR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.28 to 2.49). Conclusions: Low thiamine intake was associated with oversleeping, and alcohol use intensified that association. These results were found in a context where overt clinical symptoms due to thiamine deficiency are considered rare. More awareness of the potential relationship of thiamine intake with oversleeping and its related risks should be considered.

  • Recently, one-person households have surpassed nuclear families. One-person households are expected to have many problems with health due to an irregular life style and a tendency to be more isolated from society. In addition, we need to divide the generations and survey each generation due to differences in one-person household factors and characteristics as well as the unique physical conditions of each generation. Therefore, based on the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this survey examined health behavior differences between one-person households and non-one-person households according to generation (respectively) as well as studied how one-person households and health behavior influence subjective health conditions. The major result of this survey is as follows. First, one-person households reveal a higher rate in the negative health behavior than non-one-person households. Second, the physical activity of all households reveals a high rate of non-activity. Third, health scores of one-person households are lower than that of non-one-person households; consequently, the analysis of health scores for one-person households and non-one-person households indicated that the middle age health scores for one-person households have been lowest in generations. Fourth, the factors that influence subjective health conditions indicated that one-person household and health behavior has meaningful influence; in addition, the subjective health condition of one-person households are lower than non-one-person households under controlled health behavior.
