  • Paleostress was interpreted by analyzing the healed microcracks and the secondary fluid inclusions in quartz of the Jurassic granites distributed in the southwestern Ogcheon Folded Belt, South Korea. The most dominant direction of healed microcracks in the study area was oriented $N30^{\circ}W$, and $N70^{\circ}W$ direction was also recognized. The formation temperatures of fluid inclusions were ranged $380-550^{\circ}C$ and the age of healed microcrack formations might have been approximately 166-200 Ma. Comparing the paleostress orientation obtained from the direction of healed microcracks to the formation age of healed microcracks estimated from the secondary fluid inclusions, it is considered that granitic rock body in study area was subject to a maximum horizontal principal stress along the NNW-SSE and WNW-ESE directions in the early Jurassic to middle Jurassic.

  • Since healed microcracks in quartz grain of grantic rocks within the same mass have identical preferred orientations, the oreintations of granitic cores may be determined if the distinctive feature of healed microcracks can be used.In this study, the possibility of determining orientations of granitic cores using healed microcrack orientations were examined using samples from the borehole drilled to 200 m in depth at the Hongcheon. Eight sections whose core recoveries are 100% were selected. Two to six samples were collected in each section and orientations of healed microcracks in each sample were measured. Healed microcracks in samples from each section show almost identical orientations. The error range for sections with only one preferred orientations is within $\pm$5$^{\circ}$, indicating that correct orientations of core can be determined. However, orientations of cores in sections which have 2 or more healed microcrack orientations should be determined using orientations as well as distribution of peaks of orientations. The error range for this case is lager than former one and is within $\pm$15$^{\circ}$. The orientations of joint which is very impontant factor for designing tunnel and slope stability can be determined using healed microcrack orientation in cores.

  • Late Cretaceous to early Tertiary paleostress was evaluated by analyzing the healed microcracks in the Cretaceous granite of the Goheung area, south Korea. Healed microcracks in five granite samples (GH-1, GH-3, GH-4, GH-5, GH-8) were investigated and measured according to direction. The directions of maximum horizontal principal stress in GH-1, GH-3, and GH-4 are dominantly $N60^{\circ}W\;and\;N70^{\circ}E,\;N20^{\circ}W\;and\;N50^{\circ}W$, while minor directions are N-S and $N30^{\circ}E$. In GH-5 and GH-8, $N40^{\circ}E\;and\;N10^{\circ}E$ are the most dominant directions, while $N40^{\circ}W$ is the minor direction. Thus overall, the most dominant directions of healed microcracks in the study area are oriented $N60^{\circ}W$, while minor directions are oriented $N20^{\circ}W,\;N20^{\circ}E\;and\;N70^{\circ}E$, essentially NE. Combining the paleostress results of this study with other studies, the direction of the maximum horizontal principal stress in the study area during the late Cretaceous to the early Tertiary should perhaps be changed WNW to NE. The reason for this is thought to be the complex tectonic movements which occurred in northeast Asia at that time.

  • Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the histomorphometric characteristics of the healing process of microcracks in the cortical bone after the installation of mini-implants (MIs). Methods: Self-drilling MIs were inserted into the tibial diaphysis of twelve adult male New Zealand rabbits. Four MIs per rabbit were placed randomly. The animals were divided into four groups according to the length of the healing period: group A was sacrificed immediately, group B was sacrificed after one week, group C was sacrificed after two weeks, and group D was sacrificed after four weeks. Cortical bone thickness was measured using micro-computed tomography, and histomorphometric analyses of the cumulative length of the microcracks (CLCr) and the total number of microcracks (NCr) were performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results: The microcracks were radially and concentrically aligned in the peri-MI bone. The CLCr decreased significantly one week after the surgery, mainly due to healing of the concentrically aligned microcracks. The CLCr showed another significant decrease from two weeks after the surgery to four weeks after the surgery, mainly reflecting healing of the radially aligned microcracks. A statistically significant decrease in the NCr occurred as the microcracks healed from zero weeks to two weeks. However, no significant difference in the NCr was found between groups C and D. Conclusions: In order to improve the primary stability of MIs, delayed loading and a healing period of a certain length are recommended to ensure the optimal healing of microcracks and bone remodeling.
