  • Lumbar puncture is an essential procedure for obtaining fluid from spinal meningeal spaces, and post-lumbar puncture headache is the most frequent adverse event. This case report evaluates the effects of treatment with traditional Korean medicine on a patient suffering post-lumbar puncture headache using the Headache Disability Inventory (HDI) and the visual analog scale (VAS). The patient's HDI score decreased from 46 to 6 after treatment, and the VAS score decreased from 62 to 5. The results suggest that traditional Korean medicine can be helpful in managing post-lumbar puncture headache.

  • The etiology of chronic headache is not yet fully explained, the treatment of this symptom is not simple. We show the effect of Qigong therapeutics applied on chronic headache patient, in order to establish a primary data for further studies of new treatments. We treated 2 times a weeks for 3 weeks. The acupoints, (太陽穴)(Ex-HN5), (老龍穴), (大趾甲下穴), and (百會穴)(GV20) were stimulated for 10 seconds by Qigong-Acupuncture, and after that Qigong therapy was performed for 30 minutes The effects were analyzed using VAS scores, PPI(Present Pain Intensity), HI(Headache Index) and HDI(The Henry Ford Headache Disability Inventory). We concluded that Qigong therapeutics applied on chronic headache patient showed effects of relieving pain, improving general activities and changing the mood. Further researches are needed to evaluate the distinct functional mechanism of Qigong therapeutics, hut this study is meaningful in the sense that it will act as a fundamental study to build on.

  • Objectives : To introduce and compare various headache measurement tools, in order to provide fundamental information for future clinical trials and development of oriental medicine measurement tools. Methods : Eight headache assessment scales, Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire(MQoLQ), Migraine-Specific Quality of Life(MSQOL), Migraine-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire(MSQ), The Headache Impact Questionnaire(HImQ), Headcahe Needs Assessment Survey(HANA), Henry Ford Headache disability Inventory(HDI), Migraine Disablity Assessment Scale(MIDAS) and Headache Impact Test(HIT-6), were searched through Pubmed. General character, the process of development, verification of reliability, internal consistency, responsiveness to patient's change and validity were reviewed. Results : In assessing the quality of life of migraine patients, MQoLQ can be used to measure the change within 24 hours, MSQ and MSQOL can be used to measure the change during a relatively longer period of time. The frequency and bothersomeness of headache can be easily measured by HANA. HImQ can be used to measure the intensity of headache and the influence on normal daily activities. HDI can measure the emotional difficulties of headache patients. HIT-6 and MIDAS makes measurements possible in a short period of time, and the reliability and validity have been verified numerously. HIT-6 and MIDAS are the most frequently used measurement tools because they are simple and easy for both the assessor and the patient to understand and use. Conclusions : In this study, various headache assessment tools have been reviewed. The assessed tools were widely used after being verified for their reliability and validity. We hope this study provides fundamental information in establishing future clinical trial and clinical practice guidelines. We also hope this study to contribute to the development of an oriental medicine assessment tool for headache.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to report improvement of acute headache incurred in a traffic accident in five patients who underwent inpatient treatment with Korean medicine. Methods: We collected data for traffic accident patients with acute headache who were admitted to the Ja-Seng Hospital of Korean Medicine from November 2019 to April 2020 and received combinational Korean medical treatment. All patients had numerical rating scale (NRS) values of 6 or greater. The patients were treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine, and chuna treatment. We measured the validity of the treatment with the NRS, Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6), and Henry Ford Headache Disability Inventory (HDI) at admission and on the date of hospital discharge. Results: At the end of the treatment, all patients showed decreases in NRS, HDI, and HIT scores. Conclusions: The combination of Korean medicine at admission was effective in five patients with acute headache after a traffic accident. However, the number of subjects was insufficient and individual efficacy was not measured in this study. Therefore, further studies are needed on this topic.

  • Objectives : Clinical character of chronic tension-type headache is bilateral, moderate intensity, persistent and chronic, repeating disease and CTTH is a common prevalent disease, but pathophysiology and likely mechanism remain unclear. It impedes subjective quality of life. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of sa-am acupuncture method for chronic tension-type headache. Methods : In this randomized, single blind, placebo-controlled study, we compared active acupuncture with sham acupuncture for the treatment of chronic tension-type headache. Volunteers who satisfied the requirements were enrolled in study. Evaluation of chronic tension-type headache was measured by VAS and Headache Disability Inventory(HDI), Six point Linkert Scale before and after treatments. Results : 26 subjects finished study. There were not difference between two groups on age, sex, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, Byeonjeung, sunrise of treatment. In change of VAS, there were not difference between two groups on before treatment. Before treatment per visit, VAS of 6th and 7th visit were significantly decreased in active acupuncture(each p=0.039, p=0.008) and were not decreased in sham acupuncture. In change of VAS on a withdrawing needling after treatment, VAS of 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th visit were significantly decreased in active acupuncture (each p=0.001, 0.038, 0.035, 0.008) and VAS of 2nd, 4th and 5th, 6th visit were significantly decreased in sham acupuncture(each p=0.033, 0.032, 0.035, 0.031). In change of VAS on 2hrs after treatment, VAS of 4th and 5th, 6th visit were significantly decreased in active acupuncture(each p=0.014, 0.023, 0.027) and 5th visit were significantly decreased in sham acupuncture(each p=0.004, 0.009).
