A Study on the Development of Driving Simulator for Improvement of Unmanned Vehicle Remote Control (무인차량 원격주행제어 신뢰성 향상을 위한 통합 시뮬레이터 구축에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes the development of unmanned vehicle remote control system which is configured with steering and accelerating/braking hardware to improve the sense of reality and safety of control. Generally, in these case of the remote control system, a joystick-type device is used for steering and accelerating/braking control of unmanned vehicle in most cases. Other systems have been developing using simple steering wheel, but there is no function of that feedback the feeling of driving situation to users and it mostly doesn't include the accelerating/braking control hardware. The technology of feedback means that a reproducing the feeling of current driving situation through steering and accelerating/braking hardware when driving a vehicle in person. In addition to studying feedback technologies that reduce unfamiliarity in remote control of unmanned vehicles, it is necessary to develop the remote control system with hardware that can improve sense of reality. Therefore, in this study, the reliable remote control system is developed and required system specification is defined for applying force-feedback haptic control technology developed through previous research. The system consists of a steering-wheel module similar to a normal vehicle and an accelerating/braking pedal module with actuators to operate by feedback commands. In addition, the software environment configured by CAN communication to send feedback commands to each modules. To verify the reliability of the remote control system, the force-feedback haptic control algorithms developed through previous research were applied, to assess the behavior of the algorithms in each situation.

  • This paper investigates the possibility of exploiting haptic force-feedback technology for interacting with Nanta music. We use VR technologies including touch processing technologies and haptic devices to offer touch of cylinder objects and cup object to users. Haptic device is used to implement touch model in VR space. Matlab/Simulink and proSENCE Virtual Touch Toolbox of Handshake Inc. for experiment, are used as programing tools. Function needed to describe the movement of x, y, and z axis respectively are applied to delineate the natural movement of water in cup object modeled with 3D. A certain amount of water in cup object has the difference of sounds. In experiment, to perceive the appearance of 3D object by touch and to feel the tactile by touch are conducted with the effect of sound on Haptic perception. We also verify that it is possible to develop games or contents in VR space by using point.

Multiple Vibration Signal Feedback for Mobile Devices (모바일 기기에서의 다중 진도 신호 피드백)

  • In this paper, we introduce the appoaches that aim to improve user experience in mobile device by the use of multiple vibration signal feedback, conducted by Haptics and Virtual Reality laboratory at POSTECH. We introduce current progresses of our 'Vibrotactile flow using multiple vibration actuators' and 'Real-time dual-channel haptic music player.' The 'Vibrotactile flow using multiple vibration actuators' produces vibrotactile flow sensations by using multiple actuators and that improves the information transfer on mobile devices. The 'Real-time dual-channel haptic music player' generates vibrotactile sensation by transforming auditory signal, which improves the user experience of mobile devices. These approaches can be good examples to fulfill the demands of better information transfer capability and user experience on mobile devices.

  • In this paper, a transparency analysis and network-adaptive transport scheme are proposed in order to improve transparency of EBA-based force-reflecting teleoperation. EBA guarantees stability of force-reflecting teleoperation over network delay and loss but has limitation that it cannot overcome transparency deterioration of haptic interactions. The proposed transparency analysis quantifies the force feedback distortion caused by network delay and loss. Based on the analysis, the proposed haptic data synchronization and transmission rate control schemes adapt synchronization delay and transmission rate to current network state for more transparent haptic interaction. Through Matlab/Simulink simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed analysis provides an acceptable quantification method about haptic interaction quality and that the proposed haptic data transport scheme effectively improves haptic interaction quality with respect to network delays and losses.

  • In this paper, we investigate the issues on the design and implementation of tele-operation system based on the haptic interface. Here, the 3-DOF haptic device and the X-Y-Z stage are employed as master controller and slave system respectively. For this master-slave system, the force feedback algorithm, the modeling of virtual environments and the control method of X-Y-Z stage are presented. In this paper, internet network is used for data communication between master and slave.

  • In this paper, a five degree-of-freedom haptic device is proposed. The proposed haptic device has a pen which is suspended by tensioned six strings. Human operator handles the pen. Six DC motors are used as actuators to generate tensions in six strings to make resultant force feedback at the pen to the human operator Six encoders are used for calculating the movement of the pen. A digital controller is used for generate control signals for the suitable tension in the six strings. A current amplifiers is used for amplifying the control signals. Cable-suspended system has advantages of structure simplicity (only with several strings driven by motors without using other tensioning mechanisms), low inertia, and high force-to-weight ratio.   • Electro-active polymers and dielectric elastomers have many intriguing properties that enable smart interfaces and electrically tunable optical systems, such as haptic feedback devices, artificial muscles, and expansion-tunable optical elements. These device classes are of great interest owing to their promising roles in next-generation technologies including virtual or augmented reality, human sensing and muscular enhancement, and artificial skins. In this report, we review basic principles, current state-of-the-art techniques, and future prospects of electro-active and dielectric elastomer technology. We describe chemical and physical properties of the most promising polymer substances, essential elementary architectures for artificial muscle-like functionalities, and their applications to haptic interfaces, muscular enhancement, and focus-tunable optical elements.

  • A technology that allows users to feel the elasticity of fabric through force feedback in the fashion and textile fields is very helpful to related manufacturing and sales areas. Currently bundle of fabrics, so called Swatch, is the only available way for the designer, manufacturer and the end-user to feel the fabrics. Images and video clips provide only visual characteristics, hence touch and stiffness are also very important characteristics to check beforehand. A study is conducted on a haptic device, which estimates the amount of change in the length of the virtual fabric and generates resistive force so that the user could feel the fabric stiffness. Since cables that can only transmit the tensile force are used, a force realization method is proposed, and it is verified numerically and experimentally.
