A Study on Conventional Expression of Hangul Ganchal (한글 간찰(簡札)의 상투적(常套的) 표현(表現) 고찰(考察))

  • This study is purposed to observe conventional expression of Hangul Ganchal. The conventional expression of Hangeul Ganchal had set a pattern from 16th century to 17the century after establishing its regular form. It is mainly found in the introduction and the conclusion of the letters. Especially, they are concretely shown at an address form and greeting in the former, a farewell and the close in the latter. Generally, a native tongue was often used in address form at Suncheon Kim's Eongan in 16th century and Hyun-Poong Kwak's Eongan in 17th century. However, a Chinese character was commonly found in the introduction at Jingbo-Eongan-Dok in 19th century. Specifically, in case of response, the conventional expression of 'read your letter' was added in greeting part. In Suneon of 16th century, this type was gradually established to the form, and in Hyuneon of 17th century, a native tongue set a pattern. However, Jingeon of 19th century, a Chinese character was mainly used instead of a native tongue. The changing form of farewell and the close showed similar pattern as the aspect of greeting form. They seemed to be more simple and repetitive in Hyuneon compared with the form of Suneon. Furthermore, a Chinese character was dominated in the conclusion of letters in Jingeon. Consequently, the paper examined the two types of letter between Hangul letters and Chinese character letters were strongly associated with each other. It is expected that more details research will be coped with next study.

The Effect on Legibility of the Inner Space Width of Hangeul Characters: Focusing on the Outer Space Width (한글꼴의 속공간 넓이가 가독성에 미치는 영향: 외부 속공간을 중심으로)

  • Among the various factors that form fonts, the concept of a new Korean font term called Inner Space Width was developed and the effect of changes in fonts applied to readability was analyzed. [Experiment 1] An empirical analysis was attempted on how the Korean-shaped Outer Space Width affects readability among the texts. Among the factors that make up the paragraph, Outer Space Width by letter size, letter size, letter spacing, letter spacing, and letter shape was composed of Yoon Myung-jo 110-160 and Inner Space Width of Yoon Myung-jo 110 was the widest at 26.83%. [Experiment 2] In-depth interviews with experts were conducted to derive factors and evaluation indicators constituting the inner space. Inner Space Width is evaluated as a complex factor that affects preference and fatigue, and is related to understanding and speed. This study empirically reviewed the effect on readability using the concept of Inner Space Width in the absence of existing research on Hangul-shaped fast space, and is expected to be actively used in the development of fonts in the future.

An Analysis of Improvement and Compilation Issues of Mathematics Textbooks for Elementary Schools: Focusing on the 2015 Revised Elementary School Mathematics Textbook Government Published (초등학교 수학 교과서 개선과 편찬 상의 이슈 분석: 2015 개정 초등학교 수학 국정 교과용 도서를 중심으로)

  • In this paper, implications for future curriculum compilation were sought by analyzing the process and results of compiling books for elementary school mathematics textbooks government published according to the 2015 revised curriculum. The 2015 revised elementary mathematics textbooks government published was operated with a systematic compilation system so that academia and school field experts across the country could demonstrate their expertise. As improvements in content, the unit and time to strengthen basic computational skills were increased, and the mathematical concept and principle introduction method and algorithm presentation method were improved, and the internal connection between contents was strengthened. The learning period was adjusted, such as moving and arranging contents that are difficult for students to understand to the upper semester or the upper grade. In the 1st and 2nd graders, the amount of reading was drastically reduced to suit the students' level of Korean, and sentences and vocabulary were improved, and instructions were briefly revised. As for editing and design improvements, illustrations of each unit's introduction and contextual pictures were presented in detail, and the characters in the textbook were consistently presented across all grades, giving children characters a role to actively participate in learning in the textbook. In the process of compiling, the media, the National Assembly, and civic groups raised opinions that sentences and vocabulary in first-year textbooks are more difficult than students' level of Hangeul education, that reducing textbooks makes it difficult for students to understand. Accordingly, efforts to improve textbook compilation and the results were viewed. Through the overall analysis as above, for future compilation of state-authored textbooks and certified textbooks, a plan to improve textbook compilation for students and teachers and a plan to operate compilation was proposed.

CKFont2: An Improved Few-Shot Hangul Font Generation Model Based on Hangul Composability (CKFont2: 한글 구성요소를 이용한 개선된 퓨샷 한글 폰트 생성 모델)

  • A lot of research has been carried out on the Hangeul generation model using deep learning, and recently, research is being carried out how to minimize the number of characters input to generate one set of Hangul (Few-Shot Learning). In this paper, we propose a CKFont2 model using only 14 letters by analyzing and improving the CKFont (hereafter CKFont1) model using 28 letters. The CKFont2 model improves the performance of the CKFont1 model as a model that generates all Hangul using only 14 characters including 24 components (14 consonants and 10 vowels), where the CKFont1 model generates all Hangul by extracting 51 Hangul components from 28 characters. It uses the minimum number of characters for currently known models. From the basic consonants/vowels of Hangul, 27 components such as 5 double consonants, 11/11 compound consonants/vowels respectively are learned by deep learning and generated, and the generated 27 components are combined with 24 basic consonants/vowels. All Hangul characters are automatically generated from the combined 51 components. The superiority of the performance was verified by comparative analysis with results of the zi2zi, CKFont1, and MX-Font model. It is an efficient and effective model that has a simple structure and saves time and resources, and can be extended to Chinese, Thai, and Japanese.

A Study on the Characteristics of Chwibyeong in 『Jungli-Euiguae』 written Hangeul (『뎡니의궤(整理儀軌)』에 나타난 취병의 특성 연구)

  • Chwibyeong is a hedge made into a folding screen shape by setting up supports and placing plants on it. Traces of chwibyeong can be found in various paintings, such as the 『Donggwoldo painting of Changdeokgung Palace』, 『Gyujanggak painting』, 『Munhuimyo painting』, and 『Hwaseong Temporary Palace painting depicting Suwon Hwaseong Temporary Palace』. However, since the Chwibyeong has not survived to this day, the whereabouts of the Chwibyeong were estimated through ancient documents, old paintings, and photographs. In the case of a manned Chwibyeong using a support, a picture related to the composition of the Chwibyeong using a base can be Winnow willow. Methods for creating intoxicants using coniferous trees such as Chinese juniper and Rigid-branch yew have been studied. In existing old paintings, only the supports, parts of leaves, and branches were depicted, so the location of the Chwibyeong could not be confirmed through the drawings. However, in the 『Jungli-Euiguae』, written around 1797, a manned type of Chwibyeong using a support was depicted as the material of the Chwibyeong. By being able to confirm the type of tree used, it was possible to confirm the method of creating a Chwibyeong using Winnow willow introduced in the 『LimwonGyeongjeji』. The Effect of Syllable Frequency, Syllable Type and Final Consonant on Hangeul Word and Pseudo-word Lexical Decision: An Analysis of the Korean Lexicon Project Database (한글 두 글자 단어와 비단어의 어휘판단에 글자 빈도, 글자 유형, 받침이 미치는 영향: KLP 자료의 분석)

  • This study attempted to find out how lexical decision of two-syllable words or pseudo-words is affected by syllabic information, such as syllable frequency, syllable (i.e. vowel) type, and presence of final consonant (i.e. batchim), through the analysis of the Korean Lexicon Project Database (KLP-DB). Hierarchical regression of RT data showed that lexical decision of words was influenced by the frequency of the first syllable, the syllable type of the first and second syllables, batchim for the first and second syllables, and also by the interaction of the two syllable types and the interaction of syllable frequency and batchim of the second syllable. For pseudo-words lexical decision was influenced by the frequency of the first and second syllables, syllable type of the first syllable, and batchim for the first and second syllables, and also by the interaction of the two syllable frequencies, the interaction of the two syllable types, and the interaction of syllable frequency and batchim of the first syllable. Word frequency had a strong effect on lexical decision of words, while syllabic information had a stable effect on the lexical decision of pseudo-words. These results indicate that syllabic information should be seriously considered in constructing word and pseudo-word lists and interpreting lexical decision time. Understanding the effect of syllabic information will also contribute to the understanding of word recognition process.

A Study on Avant-Garde Fine Art during the period of Japanese Colonial Rule of Korea, centering on 'Munjang' (a literary magazine) (일제강점기 '전위미술론'의 전통관 연구 - '문장(文章)' 그룹을 중심으로)

  • From the late 1920s to the 1930s, Korea's fine art community focused on traditional viewpoints as their main topic. The traditional viewpoints were discussed mainly by Korean students studying in Japan, especially oil painters. Such discussions on tradition can be divided into two separate halves, namely the pre- and post-Sino-Japanese War (1937) periods. Before the war, the modernists among Korea's fine art community tried to gain a fuller understanding of contemporary Western modern art, namely, expressionism, futurism, surrealism, and so forth, on the basis of Orientalism, and borrow from these schools' in order to create their own works. Furthermore, proponents of Joseon's avant-garde fine arts and artists of the pro-fine art school triggered debate on the traditional viewpoints. After the Sino-Japanese War, these artists continued to embrace Western modern art on the basis of Orientalism. However, since Western modern fine art was regressing into Oriental fine art during this period, Korean artists did not need to research Western modern fine art, but sought to study Joseon's classics and create Joseon's own avant- garde fine art in a movement led by the Munjang group. This research reviews the traditional view espoused by the Munjang group, which represented the avant-garde fine art movement of the post-war period. Advocating Joseon's own current of avant-garde fine art through the Munjang literary magazine, Gil Jin - seop, Kim Yong-jun and others accepted the Japanese fine art community's methodology for the restoration of classicism, but refused Orientalism as an ideology, and attempted to renew their perception of Joseon tradition. The advocation of the restoration of classicism by Gil Jin-seop and Kim Yong-jun appears to be similar to that of the Yasuda Yojuro-style restoration of classicism. However, Gil Jin-seop and Kim Yong-jun did not seek their sources of classicism from the Three-Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods, which Japan had promoted as a symbol of unity among the Joseon people; instead they sought classicism from the Joseon fine art which the Japanese had criticized as a hotbed of decadence. It was the Joseon period that the Munjang group chose as classicism when Japan was upholding Fascism as a contemporary extremism, and when Hangeul (Korean writing system) was banned from schools. The group highly evaluated literature written in the style of women, especially women's writings on the royal court, as represented by Hanjungnok (A Story of Sorrowful Days). In the area of fine art, the group renewed the evaluation of not only literary paintings, but also of the authentic landscape paintings refused by, and the values of the Chusa school criticized as decadent by, the colonial bureaucratic artists, there by making great progress in promoting the traditional viewpoint. Kim Yong-jun embraced a painting philosophy based on the painting techniques of Sasaeng (sketching), because he paid keen attention to the tradition of literary paintings, authentic landscape paintings and genre paintings. The literary painting theory of the 20th century, which was highly developed, could naturally shed both the colonial historical viewpoint which regarded Joseon fine art as heteronomical, and the traditional viewpoint which regarded Joseon fine art as decadent. As such, the Munjang group was able to embrace the Joseon period as the source of classicism amid the prevalent colonial historical viewpoint, presumably as it had accumulated first-hand experience in appreciating curios of paintings and calligraphic works, instead of taking a logical approach. Kim Yong-jun, in his fine art theory, defined artistic forms as the expression of mind, and noted that such an artistic mind could be attained by the appreciation of nature and life. This is because, for the Munjang group, the experience of appreciating nature and life begins with the appreciation of curios of paintings and calligraphic works. Furthermore, for the members of the Munjang group, who were purists who valued artistic style, the concept of individuality presumably was an engine that protected them from falling into the then totalitarian world view represented by the Nishita philosophy. Such a 20th century literary painting theory espoused by the Munjang group concurred with the contemporary traditional viewpoint spearheaded by Oh Se-chang in the 1910s. This theory had a great influence on South and North Korea's fine art theories and circles through the Fine Art College of Seoul National University and Pyongyang Fine Art School in the wake of Korea's liberation. In this sense, the significance of the theory should be re-evaluated.

A Narrative Inquiry of the Identities of Male Home Economics Teachers (남자 가정과교사의 정체성에 대한 내러티브 탐구)

  • This study aimed at exploring male home economics(HE) teachers' identities through narrative inquiry. Considering experiences of HE teachers and diversity in regions, twelve male teachers were chosen, and in-depth interviews were conducted between June 1st and July 31st, 2019. The transcription of the data was transferred to the Hancom Office Hangeul 2010 while the researcher listened to the recordings of the interviews. The total amount of transcription data was 174 pages, and the data were analyzed through open coding, categorization, and category verification. The themes identified as results of this study were as follows: First, 'Coincidence: Breaking the Wall of Prejudice' is related to the experiences that have a great influence on the formation of identity as a male HE teacher: motivation to enter the HE department, educational practice, etc. Through this, the experience of becoming a male HE teacher was recorded. Second, 'Facing: Surviving as a male HE Teacher' captures the current story of male HE teachers and the perspectives of their fellow teachers, family, and friends about male HE teachers. In this section, male HE teachers showed how HE classes and assessments, and their experiences in their lives, influenced their identities. Third, 'Expectations: Growing as a HE teacher' is a story about the future of male HE teachers. The ideal teacher image pursued by male HE teachers was a practical teacher. They hoped that in 10 or 20 years, they would have smooth and professional relationship with students. They advise prospective male HE teachers to become a competent HE teacher regard less of their gender. The significance of this study is that it broke the stereotype of 'HE teachers should be female' and expanded the horizon of HE education by exploring the identities of male HE teachers.

Development and Evaluation of the Home Economics-Relevant Korean Culture Experience Program for Adolescents with Multicultural Backgrounds - for the Improvement of Self-Identity and Social Adaptation - (가정교과가 연계된 다문화가정 청소년의 한국문화 체험 프로그램의 개발과 평가 - 자아정체감 및 사회적응력 향상을 위하여 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the home economics-relevant program on Korean traditional culture for adolescents from multicultural families for them for experience it directly, set up ego-identity and improve social adaptability. Further, we checked the effectiveness and efficiency of the developed program. First we developed the program composed of a total of 12 sessions based on experiencing Korean culture. It consists of largely 5 madang(parts) centered on themes such as Eowool madang, Hangeul madang, Play madang, Cooking madang and hostory madang. We ran the developed program for 3 months targeting a total of 18 persons composed of the adolescents from multicultural families and their mothers residing in S city of eastern area of Jeonnam province. We measured the participants' ego-identity, social adaptibility and participation satisfaction to examine the effectiveness of the program. The results of pre-test, post-test and satisfaction which are evaluation instruments used in this program are as follows. First, it appeared that the self-identity of the adolescent of multicultural families inceased by 0.30 from average score of 3.03 before the participation in the program to 3.33 after the participation. Social adaptability increased by 0.30 from average 3.11 before the participation to 3.41 after the participation. Second, in the program participation satisfaction, it appeared that first the middle satisfaction marked average 3.30 which exceeded median value at 3.00, meaning a little high satisfaction, whereas the final satisfaction had an averagescore of 4.03, which means a big satisfaction concerning the program participation. The results indicated that the home economics-relevant program was effective in improving the ego-identity and social adaptability of adolescents from multicultural families and supporting a role of as a member of Korean family.

Namnyeong-wie, Yun Eui-Seon's Everyday Clothes included in Wedding Gift List in 1837 (남녕위(南寧尉) 윤의선(尹宜善)의 1837년 「혼수발기」 속 부마 편복(便服) 고찰)

  • In August 1837, a list of wedding gifts was given by Queen Sunwon (1789-1857) to her son-in-law, Namnyeong-wie, Yun Eui-Seon (1823-1887) at the wedding of Princess Deok-on (1822-1844). This Honsubalgi is now kept at the National Hangeul Museum. This text was used in the present study to examine the everyday clothes of the royal son-in-law in the early 19th century. First, the everyday clothes were organized into about 36 types. They were classified as tops, bottoms, hats, accessories, belts, pouches, fans and shoes. Second, the most important clothes were the ordinary formal attire, composed of the namgwangsa dopo and namgwangcho changui. As for the bottoms, the pants, the Chinese hemp leggings, two pairs of socks, the green silk belt, and a pair of light blue ankle ties were identified. Third, as for the head and accessories, there were heukrip, with the gemstone string and silk string, the jeong-ja-gwan and dong-pa-gwan, as well as tang-geon and bok-geon. And there were the sangtu-gwan, three types of donggos, and the mang-geon equipped with okgwanja. On the other hand, the jeong-ja-gwan and dong-pa-gwan are peculiar hats whose status has changed over time since the mid-18th century. The fact that the jeong-ja-gwan and dong-pa-gwan were given to Namnyeong-wie showed that the status of these hats improved in the early reign of King Heonjong. The belt was given with the sejodae that is suitable for the dangsang, the coral plates, and the silk bag containing a flint pouch. Fourth, there were the red-colored sejodae, a ssamji silk pouch for flint and the fan decorated with okseonchu, and shoes, such as unhye and danghye.
