  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field in orthodontic tooth movement, and the optimal application period of electromagnetic field to initiate tooth movement. Eighty male Hartley guinea pigs were utilized in this study. Laterally directed orthodontic force was applied to the maxillary central incisors. Half sine-wave pulsed electromagnetic field(HSPEMP) was applied to experimental group during 10 days. According to the period of application of HSPEMP(4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours a day), they were divided into the three sub-groups The obtained results were as follows; 1. In case of application of HSPEMF during 4 hours a day, there was no significant difference in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement between the experimental and the control group. 2. In case of application of HSPEMF during 8 and 12 hours a day, there was a significant increase in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement since the eighth day, the sixth day respectively. 3. In comparison with the case of application of HSPEMF during 8 hours a day, there was a significant increase in the final amount of orthodontic tooth movement at the seventh day and the eighth day in case of application of HSPEMF during 12 hours a day.

  • The electronic and the magnetic properties of (001) surface of $KCaN_2$ half-metallic compound with full-Heusler structure are studied with the use of a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Two possible terminations of the surface are considered and only the one with N atoms in the topmost layer is found to retain the half-metallic properties of the bulk. The magnetic properties of N-terminated surface are enhanced compared with the properties of the bulk. The calculated magnetic moments on the N atoms in the $KCaN_2$ are 1.26 ${\mu}_B$ in the bulk and 1.90 ${\mu}_B$ at the surface. The subsurface metal atoms are also slightly polarized. In the surface terminated with metal atoms, not only the half-metallicity is destroyed, but also the magnetic properties of the system are weakened.

  • Structural stress under shock or impact load is varied with the lapse of time and the structural stress is called stress wave. Propagating longitudinal stress wave is studied in a 2-dimensional plate. A finite element program for elastic stress wave propagation is developed in order to investigate the shape of stress field at time increment. The longitudinal stress wave is generated by unit step function. According to the finite element analysis results, the longitudinal stress wave propagates to the similar direction of impact load and the front of stress wave propagates with the same speed as analytic solution and the shape of stress field is similar to that of analytic solution. The shear wave is occurred after the longitudinal stress wave and declined at an angle of 45 degrees compared with longitudinal stress wave and the speed of shear wave is about a half of the longitudinal stress wave. The intensity of shear wave is larger than that of longitudinal stress wave.

  • A bar with periodically nonuniform material properties is selected as a one-dimensional model of a flat-panel speaker. This paper describes a theoretical approach to the bending waves propagating i n the nonuniform bar. The phase speed of the wave is obtained using perturbation techniques for small amplitude, sinusoidal modulation of the flexural rigidity and mass density. It is shown that the wave speed is decreased due to the nonuniformity of the material properties by the amount proportional to the square of the modulation amplitude. The resonance occurring when the wavelength is half of the period of the material properties is analyzed by the method of multiple scales. It is also shown that the wave speed at the resonance mode is decreased by the amount proportional to the modulation amplitude but the wave of this mode does not propagate far enough due to attenuation.

  • Physical experiments were conducted to investigate the suspension properties of silty mud in combined wave-current flow. Suspension mass when there was opposing current was much higher than that when there was following current. It is due to the fact which strong turbulent flow in the bottom is developed in the opposing current but oscillatory flow effect decreases in the following current. Critical bed shear stress for suspension of silty mud in combined wave-current flow was deduced to be $\tau$$_{c}$~0.045 N/$m^2$. Formulas expressing the relation with initial suspension rate with bed shear stress, and the relation between the former and measured significant wave height were deduced. The relationship of initial suspension rate with bed shear stress was significantly scattered, but the relationship with measured significant wave height was reasonably good. When there is wave only, vertical diffusion coefficients of sediment were calculated from the vertical concentration gradients of suspended sediment when the concentration of suspended sediment approached to nearly equilibrium state. The diffusion coefficient increased exponentially with height from the bottom in the lower half of the flow depth but were nearly constant in the upper half of the flow depth.h.

  • Titanium in solution of EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) yield well-defined, reversible polarographic waves. In this report, a polarographic method for rapid determination of titanium in the Korean ilmenite was proposed, This polarographic method is based on the measurement of polarogram in the supporting electrolyte of EDTA. As the pH is increased the wave become more irreversible the diffusion current are diminished, and the half wave potential become more negative. In spite of the complication arising from numerous titanium species, in 0.2 M of EDTA, pH 6.3, the titanium waves are reproducible and analytically useful. In this medium titanium ion give well-defined reduction wave, and the half wave potential were -0.61V vs S.C.E. at pH 6.3. At the same time, the wave had a linear relationship between the concentration of titanium ion and the wave height. The Korean ilmenites were analyzed by this method and satisfactory results were obtained.

  • When the half infinite crack in the orthotropic material strip with a large anisotropic ratio(E11>>E22) propagates with constant velocity, dynamic stress component $\sigma$y occurre d along the $\chi$ axis is derived by using the Fourier transformation and Wiener-Hopf technique, and the dynamic stress intensity factor is derived. The dynamic stress intensity factor depends on a crack velocity, mechanical properties and specimen hight. The normalized dynamic stress intensity factors approach the maximum values when normalized time(=Cs/a) is about 2. They have the constant values when the normalized time is greater than or equal to about 2, and decrease with increasing a/h(h: specimen hight, a: crack length) and the normalized crack propagation velocity( = c/Cs, Cs: shear wave velocity, c: crack propagation velocity).

  • Acoustic coupling between combustion chamber and gas-liquid scheme injectors are studied numerically in liquid rocket engine adopting linear acoustic analysis. The injectors can play a role as half-wave resonators. The combustion chamber with numerous injectors shows peculiar acoustic coupling with the injectors. As the injector length approaches a half wavelength or the original tuning length, new injector-coupled acoustic modes show up in the chamber and thereby, the acoustic-damping effect of the tuned injectors is appreciably degraded.

  • Acoustic streaming Induced by longitudinal vibration at 30 kHz is visualized for a test fluid flow between the stationary glass plate and ultrasonic vibrating surface with particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) To measure an increase in the velocity of air flow due to acoustic streaming, the velocity of air flow in a gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator is obtained quantitatively using PIV. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap generates steady-state secondary vortex called acoustic streaming which enhances convective cooling of the stationary heat source. Heat transfer through air in the gap is represented by experimental convective heat transfer coefficient with respect to the gap. Theoretical analysis shows that gaps for maximum heat transfer enhancement are the multiple of half wavelength. Optimal gaps for the actual design are experimentally found to be half wavelength and one wavelength. A drastic temperature variation exists for the local axial direction of the vibrator according to the measurement of the temperature distribution in the gap. The acoustic streaming velocity of the test fluid in the gap is at maximum when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which are specifically 6 mm and 12 mm.

  • We have investigated the magnetic properties and the electronic structures of Tc half-monolayer (0.5-ML) on Pd(001) using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave(FLAPW) energy band method. We calculated the total energies for ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states to determine the stable magnetic state. The calculated results show that the total energy of the ferromagnetic state is lower than that of the paramagnetic one. The overlayer Tc 0.5-ML has considerably large magnetic moment $(2.09\;{\mu}_B)$, while the substrate Pd layers have been negatively polarized. The calculated density of states and total electrons inside the muffin-tin (MT) sphere are presented and discussed in relation with the magnetic properties.
