Several methods have been used to treat androgenetic hair loss, ranging from hair transplants to finasteride and minoxidil. Sometimes platelet-rich plasma injection therapy may be used to increase the satisfaction of patients who come to the hospital. However, some patients are sensitive to pain and are subjected to the inconvenience of requiring treatment after each blood sampling. The author had reported the effects of using a hair growth-promoting solution and JetpeelTM in parallel with a painless hair loss treatment method. However, the author was interested in more effective methods for patients with M-shaped or vertex hair loss who do not want to take medications or undergo hair transplant. In addition to the existing light-emitting diode therapy and electromagnetic field treatment, the author has made considered attempts to use various laser wavelength bands. However, the equipment for these methods can be expensive and are not suitable for patients who emphasize on cost-effectiveness. Therefore, the author used an existing reported method and a device based on the fractional erbium:YAG laser to provide the hair growth-promoting solution in parallel. The author chose a fractional 2940 nm-based laser device as a medium that could efficiently increase the growth phase, reduce the catagen phase, and facilitate intradermal product and drug delivery. As a result, there was a therapeutic benefit without any significant side effects such as redness and itching. Among the patients, the author reported the effects of the treatment on one patient with frontal M-shaped, mid, and vertex hair loss.
In this research, with a goal of lessening the damage to hair by adding rose hip extract to permanent wave 1 solution and performing permanent wave procedure prior to acid dyeing and maximizing the effect of the procedure, rose hip extract 15%, 20% was added to each thioglycolate 1 solution and cysteine 1 solution and the procedure was performed. As a result, when performing the procedure by adding rose hip extract to permanent wave 1 solution thioglycolate and cysteine permanent wave 1 solution, the effect of wave effectiveness is increased and the damage to hair was confirmed to be low. Depending on the rose hip additive status in thioglycolate, the treatment effect of hair was shown to be beneficial. However, the limit of this research is that the thickness of hair strands for each person differs as well as the location of the hair contributing to the difference and therefore exact judgement regarding the shape of waves as well as the level of damage cannot be fully measured. In the following clinical tests, we will test the procedure on variety of hair types.
This study is to make pH 9 reduction by adding NaOH to 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11% solution of thioglycollic acid, cysteine, cysteamin, to add it on helically winded natural hair and colored hair and leave them for 20, 40, 60 minutes, to add $NaBrO_3$ oxidant for 15 minutes and to compare and analyze the wave form. This study showed the results of permanent using thioglycollic acid, cysteine, cysteamin. In the permanent wave form according to the kind of reductant, concentration, and processing time, there were a little difference between thioglycollic acid and cysteine. But cysteamine not only showed apparent difference but also formed strong and elastic wave. The permanent wave is affected by the diagonosis of hair, the choice of permanent solution and the processing time. Therefore the scientific diagonosis of hair is to be considered first of all. By choosing the kind of solution, the concentration and the processing time according to the results of hair diagonosis and wave form, we can prevent the lengthening and damage of hair.

Objective : This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Hwangryeonhaedoktang pharmacopuncture solution (HRHDT) and microneedle therapy system (MTS) on hair growth in an alopecia model of C57BL/6N mice. Methods : Six-week old mice were depilated and separated in 4 groups ; CON (saline), MXD (3% Minoxidil), MTS and HRHDT+MTS. The treatments were applied twice a week for 17 days. The hair growth was determined photographically. The hair density, thickness and length were identified by Folliscope and the weights of body and organs were measured. In dorsal skin tissue, the expression of hair growth-related gene and protein was analyzed by RT-PCR. In addition, the hair follicles in the dermis were observed by H&E staining. Results : The promotion of hair growth was observed in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The hair density, thickness and length were also improved in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The mRNA expression of IGF-1, PRL and PL and the protein expression of VEGF and IGF-1 were increased in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The hair follicles and hair root growth were improved in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. In the above results, HRHDT+MTS were more effective than MTS.Conclusions : These results suggest that HRHDT and MTS have a hair growth activity and can be useful for the treatment of alopecia.
A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric method was developed for the determination of formaldehyde in hair. 0.3mg of hair was placed in 10ml headspace vial. 1.5mM pentafluorophenylhydrazine solution (pH 2) in 0.03 M phosphoric acid and $20\;{\mu}l$ of 500 mg/l $acetone-d_6$ as internal standard were added in vial and sealed tightly with cap. The solution was heated for 30 min at $90^{\circ}C$ in heating block. The extraction, the derivatization and the evaporation were performed simultaneously. After heating of the solution, 0.5 ml of headspace was taken up and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Low limit of detection (LaD) and Low limit of quantitation (LOQ) of formaldehyde were 0.5 and 1.5 ng/g, respectively. The method was used to analyze formaldehyde in rat hair after oral exposure. The developed method may be valuable to be used to analyze formaldehyde in human hair.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on hair growth promotion of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) for the treatment of alopecia. Aqueous solutions of MAP 7.5% with or without MSM 1%, 5% or 10% were prepared and applied onto the depilated back skin of the male mice once a day for 20 days. The degree of hair growth was evaluated by visual scoring using hair growth quantification scale (0-5, 0 being initial state and 5 being complete hair growth). In vitro transdermal penetration and intradermal retention studies of MAP were performed with Franz diffusion cell using hairless mice skin. Hair growth in the group treated with the aqueous solution containing MAP 7.5% and MSM 10% was comparable to or better than the result in the group treated with minoxidil 5% solution. Hair growth promotion of MAP was dose-dependently increased by the presence of MSM used in combination with MAP 7.5% solution. The in vitro transdermal penetration of the MAP was decreased in proportion to the concentration of MSM. However, intradermal retention of MAP was profoundly and dose-proportionally increased as a function of MSM concentration, reaching 802 ${\mu}g/cm^2$ in the presence of MSM 10% (200-fold increase). The effect of MSM on hair growth promotion of MAP was dose-proportional to the concentration of MSM due to the enhanced intradermal retention of MAP in the presence of MSM. Therefore, topical application of MAP together with MSM appears to be useful for the treatment of alopecia.
Human hair could be damaged by various physicochemical conditions and treatment. Permanent and decoloring treatment were the most serious factor on hair damage. The new permanent wave lotion containing Permeation enhancers such as Cremophor EL, Transcutol and propylene glycol based on cysteine permanent wave lotion were prepared. Efficiency of permanent wave and hair damage following pH of permanent wave lotion and addition of permeation enhancer were investigated. PH of solution, wave efficiency, loss of protein from hair, morphology of hair by SEM and solubility of alkaline solution were evaluated. The addition of Cremophor EL and Transcutol with ethanol increased permanent wave efficacy and decreased hair damage effectively. They diminished permanent wave lotion's pH and augmented permanent wave lotion's penetration compare to cysteine permanent wave lotion. new permanent wave lotion containing permeation enhancers such as Cremophor EL could be a good candidate for a new permanent wave lotion.
We have synthesized acetylsalicylic acid derivative of eugenol. And also, physico-chemical properties and analysis on this compound were examined. The correlation coefficient of the calibration curve in methanol solution was 0.9998. The hair growth stimulation of eugenol derivative on the hair of black mouse (C57BL/6), was also carried out using Implant method. When its ethanol solution was administered to the black mouse by route of skin, eugenol derivative promoted the growth of hair.
Objectives: Cornu cervi pantotrichum (CCP) has been widely used in Korean and China, as an anti-fatigue, anti-aging, and tonic agent to enhance the functions of the reproductive and the immune systems. Because CCP has various growth factors that play important roles in the development of hair follicles, we examined whether CCP pharmacopuncture solution (CCPPS) was capable of promoting hair growth in an animal model. Methods: One day after hair depilation, CCPPS were topically applied to the dorsal skin of C57BL/6 mice once a day for 15 days. Hair growth activity was evaluated by using macro- and microscopic observations. Dorsal skin tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Expressions of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-7 were examined by using immunohistochemical staining. A reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was also conducted to measure the messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of FGF-7. Results: CCPPS induced more active hair growth than normal saline. Histologic analysis showed enlargement of the dermal papilla, elongation of the hair shaft, and expansion of hair thickness in CCPPS treated mice, indicating that CCPPS effectively induced the development of anagen. CCPPS treatment markedly increased the expressions of BrdU and PCNA in the hair follicles of C57BL/6 mice. In addition, CCPPS up regulated the expression of FGF-7, which plays an important role in the development of hair follicles. Conclusion: These results reveal that CCPPS facilitates hair re-growth by proliferation of hair follicular cells and up-regulation of FGF-7 and suggest that CCPPS can potentially be applied as an alternative treatment for patients with alopecia.
Objective : Recently, hair has become one of the important aspects of beauty. So, there are many studies about prevention and treatment of alopecia. Finasteride and minoxidil have been known to drug for alopecia treatment. However, these agents have side effects such as irritation, pruritus, and erythema when they were used for a long time. So, we assessed hair growth effect on herbal mixture (RAA) include in Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Achyranthis Radix, and Acanthopanacis Cortex. Methods : 6 weeks aged C57BL/6 mice were divided three treatment groups. : CON group (vehicle solution), MNXD group (positive control, 3% minoxidil), RAA group (15% RAA solution). And we applied 200 ㎕ of three groups to shaved dorsal skin every day. Hair growth effects of treatment were determined through phototrichogram by folliscope and hair follicle morphometry by H&E staining. And we assessed hair growth-related gene (VEGF, IGF-1, TGF-β1) expressions by western blot and 5-α reductase II analysis of dermal (skin) or internal organ (prostate gland). Results : Hair density and hair follicle size in MNXD or RAA group was enhanced compared to those of CON group, respectively. Also, the protein expression levels in dermal of VEGF, IGF-1 increased but TGF-β1 decreased in RAA and MNXD group, compared to CON group, respectively. 5-α reductase II levels of tissues in MNXD or RAA group significantly decreased compared to those of CON group, respectively. Conclusion : These results suggest that RAA has the promoting effect on hair growth.
