Habitability evaluation considering various input parameters for main control benchboard fire in the main control room

  • In this study, operator habitability was numerically evaluated in the event of a fire at the main control bench board (MCB) in a reference main control room (MCR). It was investigated if evacuation variables including hot gas layer temperature (HGLT), heat flux (HF), and optical density (OD) at 1.8 m from the MCR floor exceed the reference evacuation criteria provided in NUREG/CR-6850. For a fire model validation, the simulation results of the reference MCR were compared with existing experimental results on the same reference MCR. In the simulation, various input parameters were applied to the MCB panel fire scenario: MCR height, peak heat release rate (HRR) of a panel, number of panels where fire propagation occurs, fire propagation time, door open/close conditions, and mechanical ventilation operation. A specialized-average HRR (SAHRR) concept was newly devised to comprehensively investigate how the various input parameters affect the operator's habitability. Peak values of the evacuation variables normalized by evacuation criteria of NUREG/CR-6850 were well-correlated as the power function of the SAHRR for the various input parameters. In addition, the evacuation time map was newly utilized to investigate how the evacuation time for different SAHRR was affected by changing the various input parameters. In the previous studies, it was found that the OD is the most dominant variable to determine the MCR evacuation time. In this study, however, the evacuation time map showed that the HF is the most dominant factor at the condition of without-mechanical ventilation for the MCR with a partially-open false ceiling, but the OD is the most dominant factor for all the other conditions. Therefore, the method using the SAHRR and the evacuation time map was very useful to effectively and comprehensively evaluate the operator habitability for the various input parameters in the event of MCB fires for the reference MCR.

  • ISO6954:2000 (Mechanical vibration - Guidelines for the measurement, reporting and evaluation of vibration with regard to habitability on passenger and merchant ships) has taken effect as the governing body for vibration regarding habitability due to ship vibration. However, ISO6954:2000, when compared ISO6954:1984 (the first draft of ISO6954), needs to clear some deficiencies concerning convenience and reliability during field applications. In this paper, ISO6954: 1984 and 2000 are proposed on their revisions in the future.

  • In case of national rental apartment, habitability is generally evaluated low comparing with typical apartments. So, researches and investment are required to increase the residential environment. In this point of view, present study aims to suggest the basic data for improvement of homeless masses' dwelling level through economic feasibility analysis. Firstly national rental apartment, which habitability is considered to be low in the point of environment-friendly, welfare, and convenience, is chosen as objective. Secondly environment-friendly project items including project flow were set up, and then basic model was formed to evaluate economic feasibility through priority survey to residents. In result, priority for two items among six different proposals were higher than the others. This result could be useful when trying to increase the dwelling level of national rental apartment being planned to construct in future.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for architectural planning through survey about the ward of women's hospital. This study considered the concept of women's hospital through theoretical consideration and analysed a blueprint of 30 cases about typical plan type, the size and layout of patient-room, space allocation and circulation. And then a survey of patients has to identify their needs. Because the rate of composition of an upper grade patient-room in women's hospital is higher than that of general hospital to improve habitability in ward needs not only the importance of the planing of patient-room itself, but also providing a small courtyard, day-room between the patient-rooms or outdoor terrace. When patient moves it was provided visual comfort and strengthen social exchange. Also, physical environment has to reflect mother's psychological needs and diversity by individuality in unit is essential to planning.

Panspermia in a Milky Way-like Galaxy

  • We study the process of panspermia in Milky Way-like galaxies by modeling the probability of successful travel of organic compounds between stars harboring potentially habitable planets. To this end, we apply the modified habitability recipe of Gobat & Hong (2016) to a model galaxy from the MUGS suite of zoom-in cosmological simulations. We find that, unlike habitability, which only occupies narrow dynamic range over the entire galaxy, the panspermia probability can vary be orders of magnitude between the inner (R, b = 1~4 kpc) and outer disk. However, only a small fraction of star particles have very large values of panspermia probability and, consequently, the fraction of star particles where the panspermia process is more effective than prebiotic evolution is much lower than from naïve expectations based on the ratio between panspermia probability and natural habitability. The lunar surface progressively darkens and reddens as a result of sputtering from solar wind particles and bombardment of micrometeoroids. The extent of exposure to these space weathering agents is frequently calculated as the location in a diagram of reflectance at 750 nm

Effect of the HVAC Conditions on the Smoke Ventilation Performance and Habitability for a Main Control Room Fire in Nuclear Power Plant (원자력발전소 주제어실 화재 시 공조모드가 배연성능 및 거주성에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This study evaluated the habitability of operators for main control room fires in nuclear power plants. Fire modeling (FDS v.6.0) was utilized for a fire safety assessment so that it could determine the performance of the smoke ventilation and operator habitability with the main control room. For this study, it categorized fire scenarios into three cases depending on the conditions in the HVAC system. As a result of fire modelling, it showed that Case 1 (with HVAC) would give rise to the worst situation associated with the absolute temperature, radiative heat flux, optical density, and smoke layer height as deliberating the habitability and smoke ventilation. On the other hand, it showed that Cases 2 (w/o HVAC) and 3 can maintain much safer situations than Case 1. In the case of temperature at 820 s, Cases 2 and 3 were up to approximately 63% greater than Case 1 in the wake of ignition. In addition, the influence of radiative heat flux of Case 1 was even larger than Cases 2 and 3. That is, the radiative heat fluxes of Cases 2 and 3 were approximately 68% higher than Case 1. Furthermore, when it comes to considering the optical density, Case 1 was approximately 93% greater than Cases 2 and 3. Accordingly, it expected that the HVAC system can influence a the performance on the smoke ventilation that can be sustainable for operator habitability. On the other hand, it revealed an inconsecutive pattern for the smoke layer height of Cases 2 and 3 because supply vents and exhaust vents were installed within the same surface.

A Study on the Construction of Vibration Measurement System and Evaluation of Vibration Related Habitability on the Training Ship (진동계측 시스템의 구축과 실습선 내 거주성에 미치는 진동 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Vibration on the ship was generated mainly by main engine and propeller. The vibration which is generated from the ship has an effect on durability of ship's machinery and it also has an evil influence on the working conditions for crew. In this research, vibration measurement system to measure ship's vibration was built and vibration signals using acceleration sensors were measured from an accomodation space of training ship. An evaluation of vibration with regard to habitability was also discussed and the evaluation process followed the guidelines ISO6954:2000E.

  • 생명체의 거주가능성(habitability)이란, 천체의 물리적인 성질 및 환경에 따라 얼마나 다양한 수준의 생명체가 생겨날 수 있는가를 보는 것이다. 거주가능성은 주로 액체상태의 물이 고등한 형태의 생명체의 생존에 필수라고 가정하고, 물이 액체 상태에서 안정적으로 존재할 수 있는 항성계의 환경에 관해 연구하게 된다. 본 발표에서는 거주가능성에 관한 해외의 주요 연구 사례에 관해 알아보고, 한국에서는 어떠한 종류의 연구가 가능할지에 관해 논의해 본다. 마지막으로 한국천문연구원의 [우주생명현상탐색] 기획과제에서 제시된 거주가능성 관련 연구 제안을 간략하게 소개한다.
