  • In this paper, a model of a Eddy-current probe coil with a ferrite core in the presence of a half-space with a layer is developed. The half-space with a layer is accounted for by computing the appropriate Green's function by using Bessel transforms. Upon introducing equivalent Amperian currents within a core to explain effect to a impedance change in the coil due to a (ferrite) core, we derive a volume integral equation, The integral equation is transformed via the method of moments into a vector-matrix equation, which is then solved using a linear equation solver. Through the above processing, we computed impedance value in a Eddy-current probe coil due to a conductivity change of layer.

  • The interference of water vapor on the chemical ionization (CI) of hydroxyl radicals (OH) by sulfur hexafluoride ion ($SF_6{^-}$) was investigated using a flow tube system coupled to a high-pressure CI mass spectrometer. Water vapor, which is required to study heterogeneous reactions of OH under real tropospheric conditions, transforms the reagent ion $SF_6{^-}$ into $SF_4O^-$ and $F^-(HF)_n$, resulting in a substantial loss in CI sensitivity. Therefore, under humid conditions, peaks corresponding to OH are drastically diminished, while those corresponding to OH-water complex ions ($[OH(H_2O)_n]^-$) are enhanced. $[OH(H_2O)_3]^-$ was observed as the major OH species. The obsercation of $[OH(H_2O)_n]^-$ by isolating humid conditions to the CI region and preliminary ab initio calculations suggested that $[OH(H_2O)_n]^-$ ions were produced from reactions between OH ions ($OH^-$) and water molecules. An additional helium buffer flow introduced into the CI region reduced loss of the reagent ion and resulted in a partial recovery of OH peak intensities under humid conditions.

  • In this paper, a transcoding method that transforms MPEG-4 video bitstream coded in 30 Hz frame rate into H.264 video bitstream of 15 Hz frame rate is proposed. The block modes and motion vectors in MPEG-4 is utilized in H.264 for block mode conversion and motion vector (MV) interpolation methods. The proposed three types of MV interpolation method can be used without performing full motion estimation in H.264. The proposed transcoder reduces computation amount for full motion estimation in H.264 and provides good quality of H.264 video at low bitrates. In experimental results, the proposed methods achieves 3.2-4 times improvement in computational complexity compared to the cascaded pixel-domain transcoding, while the PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) is degraded with 0.2-0.9dB depending on video sizes.

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986). • In this paper, we present an object-oriented stereotactic radiosurgery planning system, which accepts medical images such as CT and angiography, transforms the coordinates to a reference frame coordinate, calculates dose distributions, and finally displays isodose curves over the images. The user finds an adequate one for radiosurgeries after performing computer simulations on different treatment parameter sets. The object-oriented design concept was fully applied to the system composed of seven manager objects of different classes: a patient information manager, a user-interface manager, a coordinate transformation manager, a blackboard manager, a dose calculation manager, an isodose curve display manager, and a report manager. All the user interactions are carried out through the use of mouse buttons. The performance of the system was verified by four physicians and two medical physicists, and now is being used in two clinical sites.

  • We are developing a vol-oxidizer which transforms the spent $UO_2$ pellets into the $U_3O_8$ power through oxidizing process. The vol-oxidizer consists of furnace, filter, heater and valve etc. When the filter is blocked by the powder, the internal pressure of the furnace is increased owing to the air flow restriction. Then, the furnace vessel is swelled and deformed by it. In this paper, we proposed a procedure of the thermal analysis for furnace vessel design of spent fuel vol-oxidizer. In this work, we determined the thickness of the furnace through analyzing the internal pressure and the thermal stress of the furnace with respect to various pressure and temperature. To analyze the thermal stress, we used ANSYS 8.0 for constructing a FEM model of the furnace, and then analyzed it based on the ASME code. We also surveyed the material property and yield stress of SUS304 with various temperature. Analysis results are compared with the yield stress of the material. We manufactured the furnace and conduct the verification experiments.

  • There are several problems in the conventional 2-D image processing and 3-D measurement systems. In the case of the 2-D image processing system, it is not possible to detect elevation data. In a 3-D measurement system, it requires a skillful operator and a lot of time for measuring data. Also, there exist data errors depending on operators. The limitation of detecting elevation data in the 2-D image processing system can be solved by laser diodes. In this study an algorithm that measures the accurate data in a subject face to be detected by combining laser diodes and a commercial CCD camera is developed. In the development process, a planar equation is developed using laser diodes and the equation is used to obtain a normal vector. Based on the results, an algorithm that transforms commercial CCD camera coordinates to 3-D coordinates is proposed. The completed measurement method will be applied to replace a manual measurement system for vehicle bodies and parts by an automated system.

  • Recently, researches about the eco-friendly vehicles such as hybrid electric vehicle, fuel cell vehicle and electric vehicle have been actively carried out. The regenerative braking system is a key technology to improve the vehicle energy utilization efficiency because it transforms the kinetic energy to the electric energy through the electric motor. This new braking system requires cooperative control between electric controlled brake and regenerative brake. Therefore, it is necessary to establish fault-diagnosis and fail-safe evaluation criteria to secure reliability of the regenerative braking system. In this paper, the failure types and causes in regenerative braking system were analyzed. The transient behavior characteristics were examined based on fault-diagnosis and fail-safe upon failure of regenerative braking system.

  • The iron-based Metglas 2605S3A amorphous alloy ribbons are annealed at $435^{\circ}C$ for various periods from 5 to 210 min, and the effect of annealing is investigated on the dc magnetic properties of the ribbon. Typical square-type hysteresis loops are observed for the ribbons annealed fo 5 min, indicative of the nearly complete removal of residual stresses which are produced during melt-quenching. As the annealing time increases, the coercivity increases and the shape of hysteresis loops transforms to round type and finally to sheared one at the longest annealing time of 210 min. These results may be explained by the formation of clusters with chemical shortorder and very fine crystallites (at the annealing time of 210 min), and the diffusion-induced stresses during the formation of the clusters. For the samples annealed for 5 min, very good dc properties of the squareness ratio, coercivity and maximum permeability are observed, but, rather unexpectedly, the initial permeability is found to be very low. These results are considered to be due to a simple domain structure consisting of very small number of $^{\circ}$ domains.

  • Let ℍn be the Heisenberg group and Q = 2n + 2 be its homogeneous dimension. Let 𝓛 = -∆n + V be the Schrödinger operator on ℍn, where ∆n is the sub-Laplacian and the nonnegative potential V belongs to the reverse Hölder class $B_{q_1}$ for q1 ≥ Q/2. Let Hp𝓛(ℍn) be the Hardy space associated with the Schrödinger operator 𝓛 for Q/(Q+𝛿0) < p ≤ 1, where 𝛿0 = min{1, 2 - Q/q1}. In this paper, we consider the Hardy type estimates for the operator T𝛼 = V𝛼(-∆n + V )-𝛼, and the commutator [b, T𝛼], where 0 < 𝛼 < Q/2. We prove that T𝛼 is bounded from Hp𝓛(ℍn) into Lp(ℍn). Suppose that b ∈ BMO𝜃𝓛(ℍn), which is larger than BMO(ℍn). We show that the commutator [b, T𝛼] is bounded from H1𝓛(ℍn) into weak L1(ℍn).
