Analysis of Mathematical Structure to Identify Students' Understanding of a Scientific Concept: pH Value and scale

  • Many topics in science, especially, abstract concepts, relationships, properties, entities in invisible ranges, are described in mathematical representations such as formula, numbers, symbols, and graphs. Although the mathematical representation is an essential tool to better understand scientific phenomena, the mathematical element is pointed out as a reason for learning difficulty and losing interests in science. In order to further investigate the relationship between mathematics knowledge and science understanding, the current study examined 793 high school students' understanding of the pH value. As a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, the pH value is an appropriate example to explore what a student mathematical structure of logarithm is and how they interpret the proportional relationship of numbers for scientific explanation. To the end, students were asked to write their responses on a questionnaire that is composed of nine content domain questions and four affective domain questions. Data analysis of this study provides information for the relationship between student understanding of the pH value and related mathematics knowledge.

Experimental study of strength of cement solidified peat at ultrahigh moisture content

  • Peat soil has the characteristics of high moisture content, large void ratio and low shear strength. In this study, unconfined compressive strength and SEM tests are conducted to investigate the effects of ultrahigh moisture content, cement content, organic content and pH value on the strength of solidified peat. As an increase in the cement content and curing period, the failure mode of solidified peat soil changes from ductile failure to brittle failure. The influence of moisture content on the strength of solidified peat is greater than the cement content. As cement content increases from 10% to 30%, strength of solidified peat at a curing age of 28 days increases by 161%~485%. By increasing water content by 100%, decreases of solidified peat at a curing age of 28 days is 42%~79%. Compared with the strength of solidified peat with a pH value of 5.5, the strength of peat with a pH value of 3.5 reduces by 10% ~ 46%, while the strength of peat with a pH value of 7.0 increases by 8% ~ 38%. It is recommended to use filler materials for stabilizing peat soil with moisture content greater than 200%. Because of small size of clay particles, clay added in the cement solidified peat can improve much higher strength that that of sand.

수종 치과용 시멘트 경화시 초기 산도측정에 관한 실험적 연구 (AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE MEASUREMENT OF THE INITIAL ACIDITY OF DENTAL CEMENTS)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the inital acidity of zinc phosphate cements(Confit and Super Cem), poly carboxylate cement(Unident and Poly F), zinc oxide engenol cement(Stailine Super EBA) and g1ass ionomer cement(Fuji ionomer) Each cement was manuplated in accordance with each manufacturer's direction. All cements were mixed at the room temperature of $23^{\circ}{\pm}$, $5^{\circ}C$, and the electrode of pH meter(Ionanalyzer) was inserted in the mixed cement, and the acidity of cement were measured for 20 minutes from begining of cement mixing at $23^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$ Results were as follows 1. The acidity of all cements ranges from pH 3, 5 to 4, 5 at 2 minutes after the start of mixing 2. The value of pH at $23^{\circ}C$ was higher than the value of pH at $37^{\circ}C$ in all cements. 3. As the time elapsed, the pH in all cements rose. The 20 minutes after the start of mixing the range of acidity was from pH 5 to pH 6 except Poly F. 4. In polycarboxylate cement, the different value of acidity at $23^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$ was greatest. 5. The curve pattern of acidity in Unident was similar to that in Poly F cement The pH value of Unident was higher then that of Poly F, and value of pH in the curve pattern of acidity in Confit were similar to those in Super cement.

  • $[^3H]$ Quinuclidinyl benzilate(QNB) binding assays were performed in the dog ventricular sarcolemma fraction enriched approx. 32-fold in sarcolemma compared to the starting homogenate to elucidate the effect of antihistaminics on cardiac muscarinic receptor. Chlorpheniramine(CHP) inhibited specific binding of $[^3H]$QNB and delayed the equilibrium binding. The rate constants at $37^{\circ}C$ for formation and dissociation of the QNB receptor complex were $0.38{\times}10^9\;M^{-1}$ and $1.6{\times}10^{-2}\;min^{-1}$, respectively. The mean value for the dissociation constant from the pairs of the rate constants was 43. 2 pM and this value was similar to the value(44.8pM) determined from Scatchard analysis. CHP decreased association rate constant, indicating increase in $K_D$ value. Decrease in affinity without affecting the binding site concentration$(B_{max})$ for $[^3H]$QNB binding by CHP was also demonstrated by Scatchard analysis. $K_i$ values for $H_i$-blockers that inhibited specific $[^3H]$QNB binding were $0.02{\sim}4.8{\mu}M$. Cimetidine with $K_i$ value of $230{\mu}M$, however, was ineffective in displacing $[^3H]$QNB binding at concentration of $50{\mu}M$. The Hill coefficient for $H_1$-blockers were about one. The results indicate that $H_1$-antihistaminics inhibit $[^3H]$ QNB binding by interaction with myocardiac muscarinic cholinergic receptor and anticholinergic side effects of these drugs are mainly due to this receptor blocking mechanism.

  • We consider a finite difference approximation to a singular boundary value problem arising in the study of a nonlinear circular membrane under normal pressure. It is proved that the rate of convergence is $O(h^2)$. To obtain the solution of the finite difference equation, an iterative scheme converging monotonically to the solution of the finite difference equation is introduced. And the numerical experiment of this method is given.

  • 본 논문에서는 3차원 물체의 인식을 위한 표면 분류시 그 임계치를 선정하는 방법에 대해 제안하고자 한다. 특히 보다 세밀하고 복잡한 물체의 표현을 위해 사용하여 왔던 평균 곡률과 가우스곡률이 가지고 있던 문제점인 임계치 선정 문제를 통계적 방법에 의해 해결하는 방법을 제안하고자 한다. 끝으로 본 논문의 유용성을 실험에 의해 입증하였다.

Freak Wave 발생의 통계적 특성에 대하여 (On the Statistical Characteristics of Freak Wave Occurrence)

  • 이 논문에서는 Monte Carlo method를 이용하여 주어진 파랑스펙트럼에서 위상차를 임의의 수 (random number)를 발생시켜 파형의 시계열 자료를 시뮬레이션하여 freak wave의 발생 특성을 살펴보았다. 여러 가지 상태의 해상상태를 스펙트럼법에서 정의한 유의파고 $H_s$와 유의파첨도 $S_s$의 조합을 이용해서 표시하였다. 유의파첨도가 동일한 경우에는 $H_s$가 커질수록 freak wave 발생 확률이 낮아지며 $H_s$가 동일한 경우 유의파첨도가 커질수록 freak wave 발생확률이 높아진다. 주어진 해상상태에서 최대파고 $H_{max}$의 평균은 $S_s$의 값이 증가함에 따라 조금씩 증가한다. 그러나 freak wave의 평균파고는 $S_s$에 관계없이 일정한 값을 가지며 freak wave 파고의 평균은 $H_s$의 2배가 된다. $S_s$가 일정한 경우 $H_s$가 증가하면 파형의 평균 첨도(kurtosis)가 증가한다. 그러나 $H_s$가 일정한 경우 $S_s$가 증가하면 첨도의 평균은 감소한다. Freak wave 발생 기준인 이상지수(Abnormality index, AI)의 평균값은 $H_s$$S_s$에 관계없이 2.11 정도의 값을 가지며 AI의 최대값은 2.5-3.0 사이의 값을 가진다. 따라서 Linear focusing에 의해서 발생한 freak wave의 AI의 상한 값은 3.0 정도라고 추정할 수 있다.

탄광슬러지를 이용한 금속광산 산성배수 처리 시 pH및 온도의 영향 (Effect of pH and Temperature on the Adsorption of Heavy Metals in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Onto Coal Mine Drainage Sludge (CMDS))

  • 본 연구에서는 석탄광산 배수(CMD)를 전기정화법으로 처리 시 발생되는 슬러지를 흡착제로 금속광산 산성배수(AMD)중 중금속 처리 시 pH와 온도변화에 따른 중금속 흡착 거동을 연구하고자 하였다. 실험결과 CMDS의 pH$_{zero\;point\; charge}$:(pH$_{zpc}$)는 5로 나타났다. pH영향의 경우 구리, 아연, 카드뮴, 철은 pH 증가에 따라 제거율은 증가하였고, 구리의 경우 흡착량은 pH와 상관없이 0.64 mg g$^{-1}$ sludge로 나타났다. pH 5 이상일 때 기타 중금속 흡착량은 pH3일 때의 1.1 배로 나타났고 크롬의 경우 pH 7 이상에서 다소 증가하였는데 이는 크롬이 $Cr(OH)_{6}^{3-}$형태로 미량 용출되었기 때문이다. 온도의 영향에서 pH3일때 온도증가에 따라 중금속 흡착량은 증가하였고, 선택도Cd>Fe>Zn>Cu순으로 나타났다. pH 5이상에서 최대 흡착량(q$_{max}$)은 Cu와 Zn의 경우 각각 2.747mg g$^{-1}$와 2.525mg g$^{-1}$로 더 이상의 흡착이 일어나지 않아 온도의 영향을 받지 않은 것으로 판단된다.

열처리에 따른 고려홍삼의 수용성 갈변물질의 특성 (Characteristics of the Water Soluble Browning Reaction of Korean Red Ginseng as Affected by Heating Treatment)

  • The purpose of this study was to Investigate characteristics of the water soluble browning reaction products (WS-BRPs) from Korean red ginseng by heat treatment. Absorbance of WS- BRPs was increased with increases of heating temperature and time, but pH value were decreased In Muter color value L and b value were decreased, while a value was increased. and absorbance at 280 nm in spectrum of the WS-BRPs was increased according to the increase of heating temperature. When the WS-BRPs were applied on Bio-Gel P-30 column after heating and pH treatment, two majors browning products increased according to the progress on time. And pH 3.0 increased in quantity of high molecular fractions and pH 8.0 increased in quantity of low molecular fractions.
