  • It is intended to evaluate the performance of the shield after manufacturing a shield with cheap and eco-friendly iron oxide and alumina instead of lead, which is a radiation shielding material. After manufacturing the shield by mixing iron oxide and alumina with gypsum, the performance is evaluated by comparing it with gypsum board and lead apron using an X-ray tube. As a result of the experiment, the shielding performance of alumina was lower than that of the gypsum board, and when 50% of alumina was contained, the shielding performance was similar to that of the gypsum board. Iron oxide became similar to the shielding performance of lead apron when it contained about 75%. A shielding material using alumina shows shielding performance similar to that of gypsum, so it is not suitable as a substitute for lead. However, since iron oxide exhibits similar shielding performance to lead, it can be used as an X-ray shielding material to replace lead in the future, so further research is needed.

  • Gypsum is an important building material used to provide fire resistance to constructions by reducing their temperature rises. As the hardened gypsum is exposed to fire, evaporation of both the free water and the chemical bond water is easier than that in the cement extruding panel. The purpose of this study is to investigate the utilizability of alpha-hemihydrate gypsum to prevent spalling failure of cement extruding panel exposed to fire. This paper reports the fire-resistance property of a controled general cement extruding panel(C100), and gypsum-cement extruding panels(C50A50, A100) according to replacement ratio of alpha-hemihydrate gypsum. As a results, it is found that A100 and C50A50 are more effective to prevent the explosive spalling failure under standard fire condition than C100.

  • Gypsum board is easy to manufacture of a variety of forms and has stable mechanical properties and thermal properties. And gypsum boards are widely used to the walls and ceiling of the building as the interior building materials. The studies about technology of applying the various features in the gypsum board with additives are being actively investigated. Development methods for enhancing performance of the gypsum board using additives are largely divided into two categories. The first case is functional gypsum board that is to improve the moisture absorption and moisture-proof properties. Also studies of adsorption and decomposition of indoor air pollutants of the gypsum board using porous materials as an additive are being actively investigated. Another case is applying thermal storage materials which gives the heat storage performance to gypsum board. In this paper, we would like to introduce the various cases of gypsum board applied various additives.

  • Stearic acid (SA), polyethylene glycol (PEG), and malic acid (MA) have been used to modify the surface of waste gypsum to develop corresponding poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) composites. According to the mechanical properties, MA-treated gypsum (MA-gypsum) showed the best performance, whereas SA-gypsum showed the worst performance. In contrast to SA and PEG (having -COOH and -OH as polar functional groups, respectively), the presence of both -OH and -COOH in MA is responsible for the superior surface treatment of gypsum and its better dispersion in the polymer matrix (as revealed by FE-SEM analyses). The presence of long aliphatic chain in SA is supposed to inhibit the dispersion of SA-gypsum. Further, the performance of MA-gypsum/PBAT was enhanced by adding polylactic acid (PLA). The maximum optimized contents of MA-gypsum and PLA are 20 and 7.5 wt% for developing a high-performance PBAT composite.

  • Flue gas desulfurization gypsum is produced from emission process of fossil fuel power plant to remove sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) from exhaust gas. Production of flue gas desulfurization gypsum in Republic of Korea has been increasing due to the enforced regulations by government agency. Since flue gas desulfurization gypsum has characteristic that is similar to that of natural gypsum, there is a strong possibility for flue gas desulfurization gypsum to replace the role of natural gypsum. However, consumption of such material is still limited, only used for agricultural purposes or to make gypsum boards, it is necessary to expand the use of this material more aggressively. In this research, the chemical and mineralogical properties of flue gas desulfurization gypsum were investigated, and flue gas desulfurization gypsum with heat treatment was used to make cement paste. According to the results, it was found that flue gas desulfurization gypsum used in this experiment was a very high purity gypsum, and shown to have similar property to that of natural gypsum. Heat treating flue gas desulfurization gypsum above $100^{\circ}C$ was shown to bring beneficial effect on both compressive strength and drying shrinkage

  • While the extruded cement panel has many advantages compared to drywall, it has limited applicability in buildings due to its low fire resistance. However, an extruded panel in which the fire resistance has been dramatically enhanced through the addition of a-hemihydrate gypsum is expected to become widely applied as a partition wall or interior material for buildings. To ensure its applicability, certain safety requirements for use, such as the leaning load by residents, the impact by indoor articles, and the fire, need to be taken into consideration. The purpose of this study is to review the impact load resistance, horizontal load resistance, and fire resistance as required safety properties for the partition wall and interior materials of the extruded panel that includes a-hemihydrate gypsum. The results of this study show that the impact load resistance of the extruded panel that includes a-hemihydrate gypsum achieves SD grade for industrial buildings, and the horizontal impact load resistance achieves HD grade for public buildings. In addition, it provides fire-resistance for approximately 7 minutes longer than the existing extruded cement panel. Based on this result, it is confirmed the extruded panel incorporating a-hemihydrate gypsum has adequate safety properties for use as partition wall or interior material.

  • As a large construction such as highway, dam, reclaimed land etc. increase in number more and more, large amount of fill materials are required. However, it's difficult to obtain it because of environmental problems and economical efficiency. A alternative plan is to utilize a gypsum which is a by-product yielded from chemical plants and verify suitability to use gypsum as fill materials. Therefore, a characteristic of compaction for gypsum is analyzed and construction methods are given regard to this characteristic from construction of dike using gypsum. Based on the results obtained, it is found that moisture of gypsum in compaction should to be more dry side of O.M.C(optimal moisture content) because of sponge phenomenon. When gypsum is used to fill materials, standards of compaction should be decided from laboratory test.

  • In this article, poly methyl triethoxy silane was compounded with an inorganic waterproof admixture at a certain ratio to improve the performance of gypsum products; a new type of high-efficiency compound water-proofing additive was also investigated. Furthermore, the waterproof mechanism and the various properties on the hardened gypsum plaster were investigated in detail by XRD and SEM. The results show that the intenerate coefficient of gypsum plaster increased to more than 0.9; the water absorbing rate decreased to less than 10 %. Both the bending strength and the compressive strength of gypsum plaster increased by various degrees. The intenerate coefficient reached a maximum value of 0.73 and the strength of the samples showed almost no change when 5% cement alone was added. In this new type of the high-efficiency compound with waterproof additive, the optimal technological parameters for formulas were obtained to be: 5% cement, 18 % mineral powder, and 0.8% poly methyl triethoxy silane, to compound gypsum plaster. Meanwhile, the production of high performance gypsum as a building material has become possible.

  • Active clay, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for humidity controlling ceramic boards. The specific area and the pore volume of active clay were higher than bentonite and zeolite. The flexible strength of the gypsum board decreased with an increasing amount of porous material, and the flexible strength was lowest when active clay with a higher specific surface area than others porous materials was added. The specific surface area and total pore volume of ceramic boards containing porous material were highest at $102.25m^2/g$, $0.142cm^3/g$, respectively, when the active clay was added. In addition, as the amount of added porous materials increased, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the ceramic board increased, but the average pore diameter decreased. The addition of s porous materials with a high specific area and a large pore volume improved the moisture absorptive and desorptive performance of the ceramic board. Therefore, in this experiment, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties were the best when active clay was added. Furthermore, as the amount of added porous materials increased, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties improved. When 70 mass% of active clay was added to ${\alpha}$-type gypsum, the hygroscopicity was the highest, about $300g/m^2$, in this experiment.

  • The extruded cement panel, which has many advantages as a prefabricated method, has been limited in its application due to its low fire-resistance. However, an extruded cement panel produced by mixing a-hemihydrate gypsum offers dramatically improved fire-resistance and is expected to have wide-ranging applications in the construction sector as an interior material or partition wall between housing units. Sound insulation performance is very important for the partition wall between housing units. In this study, the sound insulation performance of the extruded cement panel produced through the mixture of a-hemihydrate gypsum is reviewed in order to determine its usability for a partition wall between housing units and for interior materials. Through the review it was found that the wall formed using the extruded cement panels produced by mixing the a-hemihydrate gypsum have ★★★ class in sound insulation test, equal or superior compared with the other two types of extruded cement panel walls currently available in the market.
