Infection status of Tapes philippinarum collected from southern coastal areas of Korea with Parvatrema spp. (Digenea: Gymnophallidae) metacercariae (남해안 일부 지방산 반지락의 Parvatrema속 흡충 피낭유충 감염상)

  • An epidemiologic survey along the several sites of southern coastal areas of Korean peninsula was performed to know the infection status of Pcnlotremc app. metacercariae in Tapes phiLlppirlawm. The clams were purchased from 13 coastal areas in Kyongsangnam- do alld Chollanam-do. in September, 1990. Each of them was digested with pepsin-HCI solution and examined under a stereomicroscope for the recovery of metacercariae. A total of 232 (77.3%) out of 300 examined clams were proved to have 1 to 273 Pawatrema app. metacercariae (54.7 in average). None of the clams from Samoan-myon Kosong-gun and Dolsan-up. Yochon-gun was infected with metacercariae. However, all of the clams from Yonghyon-myon, Sachon-guu, Dohwa-myon, Kohung-gun, Ahllyang-myon. Changhung- gun and Chiryang-myon. Kangiin-gun were infected with average 71, 31, 80 and 42 metacercariae respectively. Of the clams from Kohyon-myon, Namhae-gun, Doam-myon, Kangiin-gun and Kusan-myon. Uichang-guil examined, 97.5%. 95.0% and 90.0% were infected with about 117. 76 and 28 metacercariae. In other 4 surveyed areas. Seolchon rlyoll, Namhae-gun, Hwayang-myon. Yochon-gun Byollyang-myon, Sungju-gun and Bukpyong-myon, Haenam-gun. 55.0%-80.0% of clams were positive. and their average intensity of infection ranged from 6 to 25 metacercariae. From these results, it was confirmed that Tcpes philippincrum from southern coastal areas of Korea are highly infected by Parvatrema spp. metacercariae.

Two endemic foci of heterophyids and other intestinal fluke infections in southern and western coastal areas in Korea (전북 부안군과 경남 사천군 해안지역에서 발견한 이형흡충류 및 기타 장흡충류의 유행지)

  • Two endemic foci of heterophyid infections were discovered in coastal villages of Puan-gun. Chollabuk-do, and Sachon-gun. Kyongsangnam-do, Korea. Fecal examina- tions were performed on 153 inhabitants of Puan-gun and 138 of Sachon-gun, using cellophane thick smear and formalin-ether sedimentation technique. The helminth egg and/or protozoan cyst positive rate was 21.5% (33/153) in Puan-gun and 39.1% (54/138) in Sachon-gun. In Puan-fun, the egg Positive rate of heterophyids was the highest, 17.6%, and that of other parasites was 0.7-2.6% by parasite species. In Sachon-gun, that of heterophyids wa's 18.8%, followed by Clonorchis sinensis (12.3%). and other parasites (0.7-5.OBEI . Twenth-two (Puan-gun) and six (Sachon-gun) heterophyid egg Positive cases were treated loth praziquantel, and adult flukes were collected from their diarrheic stools. A total of 3,284 adult flukes of Heterophyes nocens was collected from all of the 22 patients treated in Puan-gun (3-778 individually) , and other trematodes were also collected from 2- 15 patients; Ftgidiopsis sumac, Stellcntchcsmus JcEcctus, Metogoninus Wokogaupci, M. miyntci, Stictodora Juscnta, Heterophwopsis continua, Acnnthopcrwphium kurognmo, and GWmnophaELoines seoi. In Sachon-gun, M. yokognwci (3,007 specimens), H. nocens (120), aud S. falcatus (46) were collected from 5 of 6 treated patients, and H. continuo and 5. tan each from one patient. The present study revealed that heterophyid flukes, especially If. nocens and M. Wokofowai, are prevalent in the southern and western coastal areas of Korea where fresh and/or brackish water fishes are popularly eaten raw.

  • Powered by compressed air, a nail gun is an essential alternative tool to a hammer on any construction site. This useful machine launches nails at high speed, automatically embedding them in a piece of wood in only a fraction of a second. In spite of its convenience, life-threatening and fatal nail gun injuries can occur when a nail gun is misused, such as in a suicide attempt, or when the operator has insufficient training because combustion nail guns are capable of firing projectiles at velocities higher than 150 m per second. Although injuries by nail guns are rarely reported, there have been reports of nail gun injuries to the head and the trachea in Korea. In the emergency room, the authors experienced a patient injured by an accidental shooting of a nail gun while working in construction. In that accident, a nail penetrated the patient's cervical vertebra through the left cheek. This report is aimed at studying medical treatment for patients with penetrating injuries caused by nail guns.

The Spatio-temporal Changes in the Sphere Influence of the Secondary Education in Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam (거창군 중등교육세력권의 시.공간적 변화)

  • In Gcochang-Gun, the population decrease, due to a rural exodus phenomenon, has led to the absolute decline in the numbers of both primary and secondary schools and students. However, the high schools in Geochang-Gun show an unusual characteristic that the students from other areas outside Geochang-Gun cover about 25% of the total students studying in Geochang-Gun. This is quite contrary to the contention that one of the major factors hindering the development of rural areas is generally the inferior condition of education. In this context, this paper aims to explore the spatio-temporal changes in the sphere of influence of the secondary education with special reference to Geochang-Gun, Gyeongnam. Most importantly Geochang High School and Geochang Daesung High School account for over 98% of the students coming from other areas outside Geochang-Gun's cross-border counties. This means that the sphere of influence of the Geochang's secondary education is dependent largely upon the two private academic high schools.

Water Quality of Agricultural Groundwater in Western Coast Area and Eastern Mountain Area of Jeollabuk-do (전라북도 서부 해안지역과 동부 산악지역 농업용 지하수 수질 평가)

  • This study was conducted to estimate the water quality of agricultural groundwater well located in Buan-gun, Jinan-gun, Sunchang-gun, and Jangsu-gun of Jeollabuk-do. The groundwater samples were collected at 328 sites (Buan-gun: 158, Jansu-gun: 45, Sunchang-gun: 32, Jinan-gun: 93, respectively). We measured 4 kinds of general contaminants (pH, $NO_3-N$, $Cl^-$, and COD) and 10 kinds of specific contaminants (Cd, As, $CN^-$, Hg, phenol, Pb, $Cr^{+6}$, organophosphorus, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene). Generally, the level of general contaminants and specific contaminants in the agricultural groundwater was suitable for water quality standard in all sites for agricultural irrigation water. Exceptionally, chloride concentrations were exceeded water quality standard of agricultural groundwater at some sites in western coast area of Jeollabuk-do. Although water quality standards in agricultural groundwater have been suitable, the water contaminants of agricultural groundwater in western coast area were gradually increased than eastern mountain area.

Prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in cattle and pigs reared in eastern areas of Gyeongbuk province (경북 동부지역 소와 돼지에서의 톡소포자충 항체 조사)

  • This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii (TG) in cattle and pigs reared in eastern areas of Gyeongbuk province by ELISA. Among 368 sera collected from 119 cattle farms, 76 (20.7%) sera from 34 (28.6%) farms had antibodies to TG. Fifty (27.2%) out of 184 cattle in Uljin-gun and 26 (14.1%) out of 184 cattle in Yeongdeok-gun were positive. Pyeonghae (50.0%) in Uljin-gun and Dalsan (33.3%) in Yeongdeok-gun had the highest TG antibodies in cattle compared to other areas. Prevalence of TG antibodies in cattle was increased with age. Among 368 sera collected from 43 pig farms, 62 (16.8%) sera from 16 (37.2%) farms had antibodies to TG. Forty (21.7%) out of 184 pigs in Uljin-gun and 22 (12.0%) out of 184 pigs in Yeongdeok-gun were positive. Uljin and Puk (40.0%) in Uljin-gun and Yeonghae (33.3%) in Yeongdeok-gun had the highest TG antibodies in pigs compared to other areas. Prevalence of TG antibodies in sows was higher than that in fattening pigs. Seasonally, prevalence of TG antibodies in pigs was highest in summer (23.4%) and lowest in winter (12.5%). Based on these observations, data indicate that infection by the protozoan parasite TG is widely prevalent in cattle and pigs reared in eastern areas of Gyeongbuk province.

  • Swirl flow in the gun type burner has an impact on the stabilization of the flame, improvement of the combustion efficiency. The swirl flow is created by the spinner which is inside the airtube that guide the combustion air. Gun type burner has generally the inner devices composed electronic spark plug, injection nozzle, combustion device adaptor, and spinner. These inner components change the air flow behavior passing through airtube. So, this study conducted the measurement using by hot-wire anemometer and analyzed effect of the swirl number of spinner on the exhaust air of gun type burner. Turbulence characteristics come up in this study was mean velocity, turbulence intensity, kinetic energy, shear stress and flattness factor of the air flow with the change of the distance of axial direction and tangential direction from the exit of the airtube.

  • This paper proposes the design and implementation of adaptive naval gun fire simulator on a naval combat system. The proposed simulator can log data, analysis logged data, modify the BCU(Ballistic Computing Unit) S/W in real-time, and evaluate gun fire performance to check it satisfy requirement or not. When the simulation result satisfies the requirement, the BCU S/W is installed on onboard system. The simulation results show that similar result with actual naval gun fire reslult.

  • It is not efficient and scarcely out of the question to use commercial expensive electron beam lithography system widely used for semiconductor fabrication process for the manufacturing application field of various devices in the small business scope. Then scanning electron microscope based electron beam machining system is maybe regarded as a powerful model can be used for it simply. To get a complete suite of thus proper system, column unit build up with electron beam gun head unit is necessarily required more than anything else to modify scanning electron microscope. In this study, various components included ceramic isolation plate and main body which are essentially constructed for electron beam gun head unit are designed and manufactured. And this electron beam gun head unit will be used for next connected study in the development step of scanning electron microscope based electron beam machining system.
