Objectives : This Study was performed to assess the antioxidative and neuroprotective effect of Guibi-tang(Guipi-tang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on PC12 cells. Methods : The antioxidative effect was investigated through the DPPH radical and ABTS cation scavenging methods and total polyphenol amount of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang). The neuroprotective effect of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was assessed using MTT assay in PC12 cells. The scavenging effect of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on NO and ROS production induced by 6-OHDA in PC12 cells was evaluated, as well as the attenuating effect of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) on GSH reduction. Results : 1. Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) had concentration-dependent scavenging activities of DPPH radical 2. Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) had concentration-dependent scavenging activities of ABTS cation. 3. Total polyphenol amount of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was calculated 79.10${\pm}$2.20 pg/IO mg and 121.03${\pm}$1.11 pg/IO mg, respectively. 4. Cell viability of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) was increased in a dose dependent manner. Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was increased at low concentrations, but decreased at high concentrations. 5. In Guibi-tang(Guipitang), cell viability of PC12 cell treated with 6-OHDA was decreased by pre-treatment, and increased by post- and co- treatment. Cell viability of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) showed variable effects by pre-treatment, but increased by post- and co- treatment. 6. NO production rate of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) didn't show a significant effect, but that of Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) was decreased in a dose dependent manner. 7. ROS production rate of Guibi-tang(Guipitang) was decreased at some concentrations. In Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang), ROS production rate was decreased at high concentrations. 8. Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) protected the 6-OHDA-induced GSH reduction. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that both Guibi-tang(Guipitang) and GBTGMB have antioxidative and neuroprotective effect, but Guibi-tang gamibang(Guipitang jiaweifang) has more antioxidative and neuroprotective effect than Guibi-tang.

Objectives: This study was perfomed to investigate the antioxidant activity and serotonin activity of Gami-guibi-tang on P815 Mast Cell. Methods: The effects of Gami-guibi-tang on activation of TPH-1 mRNA and AAADC mRNA in P815 mast cell were investigated. The effect of Gami-guibi-tang on content of serotonin in P815 mast cell was investigated. The effects of Gami-guibi-tang on activation of DPPH radical scavenging and SOD in P815 mast cell were investigated. Results: 1. The Gami-guibi-tang increased SOD activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. 2. The Gami-guibi-tang increased the intracellular concentration of serotoninin 60 ${\mu}g/ml$, 80 ${\mu}g/ml$ experiment group. 3. The Gami-guibi-tang increased menaingful the manifestation TPH mRNA. 4. The manifestation of AAADC and MAO mRNA have not made menaingful changes on Gami-guibi-tang. Conclusions: This experiment shows that Gami-guibi-tang had significant anti-oxidative effect. And Gami-guibi-tang increased the intracellular concentration of serotonin. Therefore, Gami-guibi-tang can be used by the medication of major depression disorder. But Study on mechanism of increased serotonin and clinical research of Gami-guibi-tang is suggested for future research.

Objectives: This study was to investigate clinical usage of Guibi-tang based on actual application in obstetrics and gynecology. Methods: This study investigated the number of patients who were prescribed Guibi-tang-gami-bang and what herbal medicines were adjusted according to their chief complaint from January 1st, 2007 to August 31th, 2008. Results: The number of patients who were prescribed Guibi-tang for obstetrics and gynecological diseases at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was 721. Guibi-tang has been used to treat menstrual irregularity, postpartum general weakness, postpartum pantalgia, perimenopausal symptoms and postmenopausal syndrome most frequently. And Guibi-tang has been widely used in obstetric and gynecologic diseases such as general weakness after abortion or gynecological surgery, pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, uterine myoma, endometriosis, infertility, premenstrual syndrome, urinary incontinence and breast disease. Conclusions: Guibi-tang can be used in obstetric and gynecologic diseases as described in classical oriental medicine literatures, and it is necessary to research clinical usage of Guibi-tang through randomized controlled trial.

Guibi-tang is a traditional medicine used for the treatment of colds. We investigated the levels of several compounds in Guibi-tang before and after fermentation with Lactobacillus and tested their ability to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme. Six known compounds (decursin, decursinol angelate, nodakenin, liquiritin, formononetin, and 6-gingerol) and 2 unidentified compounds were detected in Guibi-tang (GB) and fermented Guibi-tang (FGB) by an established HPLC-DAD method. The levels of the 6 known compounds were decreased after fermentation. FGB showed more potent inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme activity than GB. In conclusion, fermentation with Lactobacillus affects the content of several compounds in GB and improves its angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity.

Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Guibi-Tang(GBT) on focal brain ischemic injury induced by intraluminal filament insertion in rats. Methods : The ischemia was induced by intraluminal filament insertion into middle cerebral artery. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups, normal group(n=8); control group was ischemia induced and no treatment(n=8); GBT 1X group was ischemia induced and administrated 42.2 mg/ml/kg of Guibi-Tang orally(n=8); GBT 3X group was ischemia induced and administrated 126.6 mg/ml/kg of Guibi-Tang orally(n=8); GBT 6X group was ischemia induced and administrated 253.2 mg/ml/kg of Guibi-Tang orally(n=8) for 21 days. mGluR5, Bax, Bcl-2 and cytochrome C were investigated to observe the effects of Guibi-Tang on apoptosis. The effects of Guibi-Tang on neuroprotective/apoptotic agents in cresyl violet, choline acetyltranferase(ChAT) with ischemic injury were investigated. Results : The intensity of mGluR5 mRNA in the hippocampal CA1 was increased in normal and GBT(Guibi-Tang) 1X groups compared with the control group. The intensity of Bax mRNA in the hippocampal CA1 was decreased in normal and GBT 1X groups compared with the control group. However it was increased unexpectedly in GBT 3X group. The intensity of Bcl-2 mRNA in the hippocampal CA1 was increased in normal and GBT 1X groups compared with the control group. The intensity of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in the hippocampal CA1 was decreased in normal and GBT 1X groups compared with the control group. The intensity of cytochrome C protein in the hippocampal CA1 was decreased in normal, GBT 1X and GBT 6X groups compared with the control group. The density of neurons stained by cresyl violet and ChAT was increased in normal and GBT 1X groups compared with the control group. Conclusions : These results suggest that Guibi-Tang may have protective effect on vascular dementia.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of Guibi-tang that are used for postpartum depression. Methods: We searched on five databases [Korean studies Information Service (KISS), Oriental medicine advanced searching integrated system (OASIS), The Cochrane Library, PubMed, and China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI)] with keywords for Postpartum depression (English, Korean, and Chinese) and evaluated the risk of bias. Meta-analysis was performed on the selected studies. Results: 8 potentially relevant articles were retrieved for further evaluation. There was evidence that Guibi-tang compared with Western medicine was significantly higher rate in total effect rate (RR 1.20, 95% CI 1.04, 1.39, p=0.01). Also, the combined therapeutic effects of Guibi-tang and Psychological intervention compared with Psychological intervention were statistically significant in total effect rate (RR 1.14, 95% CI 1.05, 1.24, p=0.002). And they showed improvement on scores of HAMD (Hamilton depression scale, HAMD) and SF-36 (36-Item short form health survey, SF-36). Conclusion: Guibi-tang appears to be more effective compared to Western medicine in the treatment of postpartum depression. The combination Guibi-tang and Psychological intervention was more effective than psychological intervention alone treated for postpartum depression. However, since unclear risk of bias, the result of this study should be considered carefully. Further clinical trials should be carried out in order to academical clinical progress regarding treatment of Postpartum Depression.

Purpose: This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Guibi Tang(GT) and Placenta Hominis blended Guibi Tang(GTPH) on the postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: In order to observe the potential effects of GT and GTPH on the osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy, antioxidative effects of GT and GTPH were measured. Antioxidative activity for the samples was investigated by Rancimat method. Animals were observed for 8 weeks, and vehicle and extracts of prescriptions were administered ad libitum. And we measured the variance of body weight, femoral bone weight, serum level of osteocalcin, calcium, alkaline phosphatase(ALP), estradiol, cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and creatinine. Results: As a result, GTPH showed antioxidative effect, but did not in GT. Body weight increased significantly in 6 weeks after ovariectomy, and the weight of GTPH administered group decreased significantly. GT and GTPH decreased the serum level of cholesterol and triglyceride. Administration of GTPH increased the serum level of ALP when compared with control group. Ovariectomy and GT, GTPH administration had no influence on serum level of ALT and creatinine. Conclusion: According to above results. We suggest that GT and GTPH may be used prevention and curing the postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of modified Guibi-tang in a patient suffering from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Methods: A 54-year-old Korean female patient diagnosed with recurrent ovarian cancer had CIPN with other symptoms, such as anorexia, dyspepsia, insomnia, etc. She was diagnosed with Simbiyangheo and hence treated with a modified Guibi-tang. Neuropathic symptoms were assessed using a numerical rating scale (NRS) and a sensory score. Quality of life was assessed using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group Neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-Ntx). Results: After 14 days of treatment, the patients showed a decrease in NRS for bilateral limb pain and improvement in other symptoms, such as general weakness, insomnia, dizziness, and headache. Quality of life also increased. Conclusion: Modified Guibi-tang may be considered an optional treatment for CIPN if the patient is diagnosed with Simbiyangheo. Further studies are needed to confirm this finding.

Objectives: Seven Emotions consist of Joy(喜), Anger(怒), Anxiety(憂), Thought(思), Sorrow(悲), Fear(恐), Fright(驚). If Seven Emotions are excessive, their extreme mental stimulations cause physical illness. The aim of the research is to make a proposal on the concept of Seven Emotions by a statistical comparison between guibi-tang questionnaire and health related questionnaires. Methods: We studied the similarities among three factors of guibi-tang questionnaire and three health related questionnaires(subjective symptoms of fatigue test, beck depression inventory, state-trait anxiety inventory, etc.) using multidimensional scaling. Results and Conclusions: 1. Physical-Emotion Dimension and Chronic-Acute Dimension were labelled in two-dimensional solution. 2. Seven Emotions and Fatigue have a high correlation. 3. Seven Emotions and Trait-Anxiety have a high correlation.

Background and purpose : We previously developed questionnaire of Guibi-tang symtom on the Delphi method through the pathogenesis analysis. But developed a questionnaire was not verified in the clinical. So, to ensure objectivity, quantification and validity, verification is needed for questionnaire items before applying a clinical. On this study, we looked at whether questionnaire items had been validity in the clinical. Methods : Participants of this study were outpatients in eleven clinics. The resources were collected from 200 patients. SPSS 15.0 for Windows was used for statistical analysis : reliability analysis, factor analysis were used to verify the results Results and Conclusions : 16 items were selected through reliability analysis perforfed on about 22 items. After factor analysis, we have four component. Veryfy research of the Guibi-tang Patternization Questionnaire is needed in the future. Also I think that research should proceed about a lot of people.
