  • Predictive food microbiology(PFM) is an emerging area of food microbiology since the later 1980’s. It does apply mathematical models to predict the responses of microorganism to specified environmental variables. Although, at present, PFM models do not completely developed, models can provide very useful information for microbiological responses in HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system and Risk Assessment. This study illustrates the possible use of PFM models(PMP: Pathogen Modeling Program win5.1) with milk in several elements in the HACCP system, such as conduction of hazard analysis and determination of CCP(Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage fixed factors were pH 6.7, Aw 0.993 and NaCl 1.3%. PMPwin5.1 calculated generation time, lag phase duration, time to level of infective dose for pathogens across a range of storage (Critical Control Points) and CL(Critical Limits). The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage temperature, pH, Aw and NaCl content. The factors likely to affect the growth of the pathogens in milk involved storage temperature, pH, Aw and NaCl content. The variable factor was storage temperature at the range of 4~15$^{\circ}C$ and the fixed factors were pH 6.7, Aw 0.993 and NaC 1.3%. PMPwin5.1 calculated generation time, lag phase duration, time to level of infective dose for pathogens across a range of storage temperature.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the response of rapeseed (Brassica napus) to different planting date in the spring and varieties on growth and flowering characteristics. Eight rapeseed varieties were sowed at 10 day interval from 1st to 31th of March at Muan and Jeju in Korea. Significant planting dates and rapeseed varieties effects for growth, start of flowering and duration. As the planting date was being delayed, plant length and flower number were decreased, but branch number was increased. And, start of flowering date was retarded and flowering duration decreased with later planting date. Days from planting to flowering was shortened as seeding date was delayed and shortening degree was similar between experimental locations, Muan and Jeju. The days to flowering for rapeseed about 73~94 days for 1st March and then decreased to 57~71 days for the 31th March of planting date. 'Tammiyuchae' and 'Mokpo 111' seeded on each planting date come into blossom more earlier about 10 days as compared to 'Tamlayuchae' and 'Naehanyuchae'. The duration of flowering for the B. napus varieties was shortened as planting date was delayed. The results revealed that flowering characteristics of rapeseed can be greatly enhanced by planting as early as possible, and early flowering varieties i.e. 'Tammiyuchae' and 'Spring' were the most suitable varieties among the tested varieties for planting in the spring.

  • Multivariate regional frequency analysis has advantages of regional and multivariate framework as adopting a large number of regional dataset and modeling phenomena that cannot be considered in the univariate frequency analysis. To the best of our knowledge, the multivariate regional frequency analysis has not been employed for hydrological variables in South Korea. Applicability of the multivariate regional frequency analysis should be investigated for the hydrological variable in South Korea in order to improve our capacity to model the hydrological variables. The current study focused on estimating parameters of regional copula and regional marginal models, selecting the most appropriate distribution models, and estimating regional multivariate growth curve in the multivariate regional frequency analysis. Annual maximum rainfall and duration data observed at 71 stations were used for the analysis. The results of the current study indicate that Frank and Gumbel copula models were selected as the most appropriate regional copula models for the employed regions. Several distributions, e.g. Gumbel and log-normal, were the representative regional marginal models. Based on relative root mean square error of the quantile growth curves, the multivariate regional frequency analysis provided more stable and accurate quantiles than the multivariate at-site frequency analysis, especially for long return periods. Application of regional frequency analysis in bivariate rainfall-duration analysis can provide more stable quantile estimation for hydraulic infrastructure design criteria and accurate modelling of rainfall-duration relationship.

  • Plantlets of Alocasia amazonica regenerated under a photon flux density (PFD) of 15 or $30{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ showed better growth and development than those grown under higher PFDs. While chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b decreased, the number of stomata increased with increasing PFD. Photoperiods also affected plantlet growth and stomatal development. Highest growth was observed for the short photoperiod (8/16 h) and for equinoctial (12/12 h) light and dark periods. Very few stomata developed in the leaves of plantlets grown under a short photoperiod (8/16 h) and the number of stomata increased with increasing light period. In conclusion, both light intensity and photoperiod independently affect growth of A. amazonica and development of stomata, depending on the intensity and duration of light treatment.

  • This study was investigated the relationship between egg size and manifestation of quantitative characteristics such as larval growth, cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight etc. There was a high positive correlation between egg size and body weight of newly hatched larva. Until 2nd instar, larval growth was affected by egg size. The body weight of grown larva from big eggs were heavier on all strains except for strain El6 and the larval duration from big egg were shorter on the Japanese and the Chinese skins. These facts show that the characteristics of larval body weight and larval duration were affected more by the strain than by the egg size. The cocoon characteristics of big eggs were better in comparison than those of regular eggs.

  • Background: Cnidium officinale is a medicinal crop sensitive to high temperature. It is necessary to develop environment control technology that can reduce environmental stresses such as high temperature. This study was conducted to develop technology for stable production of Cnidium officinale by reducing damage owing to high temperature by applying shading treatment of varying duration, and structure. Methods and Results: Black shading nets were used from May to September or November; shading structures such as pillar, flat roof, and tunnel type structures were installed. Environmental changes, rate of photosynthesis, and growth characteristics were investigated. The shading treatment reduced temperature by 3℃. The rate of photosynthesis and yield with shading treatment were higher by 134% and 127%, respectively, than those with full sunlight. The ratio of shading area ranged from 50% to 71% according to the type of shading structure. The effect of environmental control on growth varied depending on the type of shading structure. Conclusions: The shading treatment reduced damage owing to high temperature, shading rate of 55% - 75% was recorded between the period May - September, and the flat roof type shading structure was considered the most suitable among shading methods.

  • Seasonal variations influence the growth duration and yield of soybeans in the tropics and subtropics. Results of different yield trials were used to determine the relationship between yield with days to R$_1$ and R$_{8}$ in different seasons. Similarly relationship for 100 seed weight was examined. Multiple regression equations suggest that increase in yield can be obtained by increasing the days to R$_{8}$ regardless of seasons. However, increasing the days to R$_1$ invariably reduced the yield. The longer the time from R$_1$ to R$_{8}$, the higher the 100 seed weight. Since the population examined was heterogeneous for photoperiod sensitivity, the need to examine photoperiod sensitive and insensitive selections separately is discussed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the difference of dietary compositions and environmental conditions on the growth and development of silkworm. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The more amount of soybean meal of diet was added, the more duration of the larval period was shortened. But Fifty percent increase of the amount of protein of diet leongthened the duration of larval period. 2. Fifth percent addition of the soybean meal to the diet does not influence the silkworm mortality, Whereas more than that gives rise to the adverse effect on the silkworm mortality. 3. The cocoon quality was significantly affected by the difference of dietary compesition. 4. In the environmental condition the duration of larval period was shortened in the high temperature and the dark condition. 5. The silkworm mortality was increased in the high temperature and the light condition. 6. The cocoon quality was significantly affected in the high temperature and the dark condition.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the outcomes of extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWI) who were born at the Asan Medical Center and evaluate the recent status of neonatal intensive care and associated problems. Methods:We retrospectively evaluated 120 inborn ELBWI who were admitted to the NICU of the Asan Medical Center between 2003 and 2006. The survival rate, neurodevelopmental outcomes, maternal and infant factors, and infant mordibities were evaluated and the relationships with survival and catch-up growth were investigated. Results:The survival rate of the ELBWI was 82% at a mean gestational age of 27+2 weeks, and with a mean birth weight of 801.3${\pm}$129.0 g. The duration of hospitalization was 85.7${\pm}$27.2 days, the duration of O2 use was 43.9${\pm}$35.4 days, and the duration of ventilatory support was 20.9${\pm}$20.9 days among the survivors. The incidence of respiratory distress syndrome, chronic lung disease, severe intraventricular hemorrhage, and periventricular leukomalacia were 41.8%, 61.2%, 3%, and 4%, respectively. The mean mental developmental index and psychomotor development index of Bailey Scales of Infant Development (II) at follow-up were 83.4${\pm}$18.2 and 83.3${\pm}$20.3, respectively. Among the infants who had >18 months of follow-up, 50.8% had catch-up growth at 12 months. Conclusion:The survival rate of ELBWI has improved; however, the morbidities remain high, thus indicating further efforts must be implemented to reduce morbidity and improve neurodevelopmental outcomes.
