  • Lateral roots formed on mungbean sprouts should lower their quality. The study was carried out to clarify the effects of aeration periods (AP; 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours) and temperature (AT; 20, 30, and $40^{\circ}C$) after 5 hour seed imbibition into 50 ppm benzyladenopurine (BA) solution on growth and morphological characters of mungbean (cv. Keumseongnogdu, Owoolnogdu and Zhong Lu 1) sprouts. On the 6th day, the mungbean sprouts were sorted by 4 categories on the base of hypocotyl lengths; > 7cm, 4 to 7cm, < 4cm, and non-germination to calculate their composition rates, number of lateral roots, lengths of hypocotyl and root, diameters at middle and upper parts of hypocotyl, fraction fresh and dry weights were measured. AP more affected growth of the cultivars than AT showing little effect on them. In the composition rate of the above 4 categories, cv. Zhong Lu 1 had the highest rate in longer than 7cm but nearly the same rate in AP treatments. Rates of longer than 4cm hypocotyls in cv. Keumseongnogdu, Owoolnogdu were increased with longer AP but their rates of shorter than 4cm showed reverse response to the former. Formation rate and number of lateral roots per sprout were decreased with longer AP, showing more severe decrement when delayed 3 to 4 hour AP. Upper part of hypocotyls and roots were more thickened and shortened in longer AP, respectively. Total fresh weights had no significant difference between AP treatments while hypocotyl fresh weights were increased with longer AP. It was concluded that in mungbean sprout culture aeration from BA treatment to the first watering permitted at least 4 hours.

  • This experiment was conducted to study effect of cold water damage on some growth characters related to source and sink at reproductive growth stage in Jinan (sea level 303m). The cold water irrigation duration had irrigated 4, 8 and 12 days at panicle formation stage and reproduction division stage compared to perennial water irrigation. Cold water irrigation shortened culm length and panicle length and degree of panicle exsertion. The shortening effect appeared great at lower internodes when treated at panicle formation stage but at higher internodes when treated at reduction division stage. Cold water irrigation decreased the number of secondary branches and spikelets per panicle, and increased the number of degenerated spikelets being high degeneration when treated at panicle formation stage. Spikelet sterility and impediment of grain filling were affected by duration of cold water irrigation being great when treated at spikelet primodium differentiation stage and reduction division stage in particular. Grain weight was also reduced. Significant relationship existed between spikelets sterility, grain filling and yield. The degeneration of secondary branches and spikelets correlated with leaf area but spikelet sterility and yield with culm length, panicle length and panicle exsertion.

  • In order to determine the influence of nitrogen on agronomic characters, forage yield and quality, Jeju Italian millet(Setaria italica Beauvis) was grown on the volcanic ash soil at the Experimental Farm of Cheju national university under the six levels of nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250kg/ha) from May 1, 2000 to August 25, 2000. Days to heading was delayed 92∼98 days as nitrogen rate increased. Plant height was 96cm at 0kg N/ha. as N rate increased, grew gradually, was 134cm at 200kg N/ha, 135cm at 250kg N/ha, and was not significantly affected between the two plots. Fresh forage, dry matter, crude protein and TDN yield increased 18.88∼42.82MT/ha, 8.45 ∼12.25MT/ha, 0.76∼1.59MT/ha and 4.32∼6.79MT/ha, respectively, as the increasing of N rate, but were not significant between 200kg N/ha and 250kg N/ha. As N rate increased, crude protein, crude fat, NFE and TDN content increased 9.0∼13.0%, 1.4∼1.7%, 9% and 51.1∼55.5%, respectively, but crude ash and crude fiber content decreased 8.7∼8.2% and 34.9∼30.2%, respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out in order to know the relationship between morphological characters and dry matter yield at vegetative growth stage in Meadow fescue grown under plant basis. 1. The dry weight of a plant (PW) indicated positive significant correlation with plant height (pH), leaf area (LA) and stem area (SA). It means that increase in dry of a plant was resulted from interactions among above morphological characters. 2. Stem area (SA) is an important morphological character for increasing the dry weight of a plant. 3. The varieties could be classified into 3 types based on plant type index (PTI, dry weight of a plant/ (no. of tiller)$^2$), it were M in tiller weight type, Leto, First and Trader in medium type and, Bundy and Tammisto in tiller number type, respectively. 4. The variety with tiller weight type had more havier tiller and larger stem thickness than those of variety with tiller number type. But, tiller number type showed higher plant height. 5. In order to obtain the highest yield in tiller weight type, there were necessary to increasing the number of tillers and higher plant height.

  • Soybean sprout decay during its culture should be one of serious problems. The study was carried out to clarify the effect of water imbibition and acetic acid treatments on growth and morphological characters of the soybean sprouts. The soybean seeds of 3 cultivars (cv. Eunhakong, Pungsannamulkong and Junjery) imbibed in pure water or 0.l% acetic acid for 3 minutes before soaked for 6 hours into 1 ppm BA solution and aerated for 3 hours immediately before 6 day culture. On the 6th day, the sprouts were classified into 4 categories on the base of hypocotyl length; > 7cm, 4 to 7cm, > 4cm and not germinated and seed floating rate, their morphological characters, fresh fraction weights and productivity were measured. The best water imbibition for seed cleaning was to soak the seeds for 5 minutes and then to aerate soak them for 40 minutes. In Pungsannamulkong and Junjery, percentage of the sprouts with hypocotyls of longer than 4 cm was higher in water imbibition than in acetic acid treatment for seed disinfection although in Eunhakong there was no significant difference between the two treatments. Eunhakong and Junjery had greater lateral root formation rate and its number per sprout in water imbibition than in acetic acid treatment but Pungsannamulkong showed reverse result. Eunhakong and Pungsannamulkong, furthermore, had more total fresh weight in acetic acid treatment than in water imbibition but Junjery showed reverse result, although there was no significant difference between the two treatments in productivity of mass production system.

  • To determine the optimum N rate m Jeju island for utricle and root production of Achyranthes japonica Nakai, a medicinal plant, the plants were grown at two plant densities $(50\;and\;100\;hills/m^2$, two plants per hill; mall plots) at six N application rates (0, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 kg/10a; split plots) in 2001. There was no significant interaction between plant density and N application rate for all measured agronomic characters. Main root length and roots per hill were 5 and 52% greater, respectively, but N content of stover was lower under lower plant density compared to higher plant density. The other characters were not affected by plant density. N application rate did not significantly affect mall stem diameter, spikes per hill, spike length, utricles per spike, mall root length and diameter, and utricle N content. As N rate increased from 0 to 30 kg/10a, SPAD values and stover N content increased linearly from 35.0 to 40.5 and 1.09 to 1.38%, respectively, and plant height, branches per hill, stover, utricle and root dry matter yields, roots per hill, and top N yield increased quadratically. Spikes per hill were increased in a cubic manner with increased N application rates. N application rate for the maximum dry matter yield of utricle and root in A. japonica was estimated to be 21 kg N/10a.

  • A comparison was made for growth and yield of two rowed and six rowed barley varieties to differentiate their fundamental characteris in relation with brewing quality. Heading and maturing time of two rowed barley varieties were similar to those of six rowed covered but were earlier than those of six rowed naked ones. Most of two rowed varieties were spring barley and low temperature susceptible, but they were relatively photoinsensitive compared to six rowed varieties. Eventhough malting barley has heavier stands and grains, they were quite similar in yielding ability with six rowed cultivars with decreased number of grains per spike. In quality characters, malting barley has better germination energy and rate, lower protein content than the common six rowed barley and decisively better for brewing that six rowed barley with higher malt yield, extract yield and quality and enzyme activity. In comparison of malting barley varieties produced in Korea and Japan indicated that those varieties produced in Japan were better in germination characters, extract yield and quality, Kolback index and enzyme activity than those produced in Korea.

  • This experiment was carried out in order to study the changes of morphological characters of the growth and thatch accumulation in :3 varieties of Kentucky bluegrass under removing clipping residues as affected by cutting management. The varieties used were Park, Kenhiuc and Newport. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The dry weight of leaf. stem and number of tiller was highest at 22. June and lowest at 21. Aug in alt varieties. And then the dry weight of rhizome, root and thatch increased with growth progressed) Tabte 3). 2. The relationship of the dry weight of biological yield and number of tillers was quadratic ally increased in the growth stage of spring($R^2$= 0.982**), and linearlly increased in the growth stage of autumn(r 0.944*)(Fig. 1). :3. The dry weight of thatch increased as an exponentially equation in alt :3 varieties of Kentucky blue-grass(Fig. 2). Thatch increased rate(TIR) can used to estimate the specifying a quantity of thatch accumulation from the turf. Thatch increase rate equation as follows. where TH$_2$ is the dry weightof thatch at T$_2$ survey time and TH$_1$ is the dry weight of thatch at $TH_1$ is the dry weight of thatch at $T_1$ survey time. $TIR(mg/cm^2/day)=\frac{Ln\;TH_2 - Ln\; TH_1}{T_2 - T_1}$ 4. Correlation coefficients between the dry weight of thatch and leaf weight was -0.633(P>0.05), and number of tiller of tillers was -0.666(P>0.5), respectively. It means that thatch accumu-lation increased with growth depression of leaf and stem.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship and effects of variables both directly and indirectly (e.g., investment (INV), government expenditure (GE), unemployment rate (UR), economic growth (EG), and income inequality). The analytical phases consist, first, to transform the data using the Log Natural (Ln) method. Second, to check normality and multicollinearity of data. Third, to test direct effects of variables (government expenditure and investment effect on the unemployment rate and economic growth; investment on government expenditure; economic growth on unemployment rate; economic growth and unemployment rate on income inequality). Fourth, to test indirect effects using Sobel test, which involves UR and EG as intervening variable. Fifth, to test hypotheses with p-value < 0.05. The results of the study reveal that, of the 12 relationships, statistics show that 11 variations of the association have significant positive and negative effects. Theoretically, the different characters and goals of GE and INV in each country will have a different impact on EG and UR goals. The study provides an input, especially for the government. To create optimal EG through GE and INV, it is necessary to allocate budgets to industrial sectors that can absorb a massive labor force and to new economic growth sectors.
