A Retrospective cohort study on the effect of health counselling through the level of $\gamma-GTP$ after screening test (스크리닝을 이용한 건강진단후 건강상담이 $\gamma-GTP$의 변화에 미치는 영향 조사)

  • 1,281 male subjects who had been examined more than 3 times for regular check-up in one human dock center of the university hospital were studied between 1990-1995, to evaluate the effect of health counselling with life style and $\gamma-GTP$ value between 1054 normal group without intervention and 227 abnormal group with intervention, ages from 30 to 69 years old. Total mean value of $\gamma-GTP$ was $45.7{\pm}40.7$ unit with highest $\gamma-GTP$ value in age group 50-59 on initial examination. Total abnormal rate was 17.7% with the highest abnormal rate of 18.6% in age group 50-59. Initially, the value of $\gamma-GTP$ was significantly different according to the degree of alcohol intake, relative weight and smoking in normal group(p<0.01) not in abnormal group. In conclusion, the value of $\gamma-GTP$ were significantly increasing in normal group without intervention and significantly decreasing in abnormal group with intervention(p<0.05), which suggests the effect of health counselling, such as the recommendation to change the health behaviour.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the mirror environment influences the attitude of the client when counselling. A group of 16 experimenters, 16 controls, a group with a mirror environment, and 32 men and women according to the presence or absence of interventional mirror environments in the control group. There was a statistically significant difference in the 'self - alienation' factor of the Authentic Scale(AS) in the experimental group that provided the mirror environment. There was no significant difference in the Semantic Differential Scale(SDS) between the experimental group and the control group. This study was conducted to investigate whether the presence of the mirror environment affects the client 's authenticity. There were significant differences in some of the factors of the Authentic Scale.

Effectiveness of a Brief Physician Counselling Session on Improving Smoking Behaviour in the Workplace

  • Background: Brief physician counselling has been shown to be effective in improving smokers' behaviour. If the counselling sessions can be given at the workplace, this would benefit a larger number of smokers. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a ten-minute physician counseling session at the workplace in improving smoking behaviour. Materials and Methods: This prospective randomised control trial was conducted on smokers in a factory. A total of 163 participants were recruited and randomised into control and intervention groups using a table of random numbers. The intervention group received a ten-minute brief physician counselling session to quit smoking. Stages of smoking behaviour were measured in both groups using a translated and validated questionnaire at baseline, one month and three months post intervention. Results: There was a significant improvement in smoking behaviour at one-month post intervention (p=0.024, intention to treat analysis; OR=2.525; CI=1.109-5.747). This was not significant at three-month post intervention (p=0.946, intention to treat analysis; OR=1.026; 95% CI=0.486-2.168). Conclusions: A session of brief physician counselling was effective in improving smokers' behaviour at workplace, but the effect was not sustained.

Smoking Cessation Intervention in Rural Kerala, India: Findings of a Randomised Controlled Trial

  • Background: Prevalence of tobacco use is higher in the rural than urban areas of India. Unlike tobacco cessation clinics located in urban areas, community-based smoking cessation intervention has the potential to reach a wider section of the community to assist in smoking cessation in the rural setting. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a cessation intervention in rural Kerala state, India. Materials and Methods: Current daily smoking resident males in the age group 18-60 years from four community development blocks in rural Kerala were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. The intervention group received multiple approaches in which priority was given to face-to-face interviews and telephone counselling. Initially educational materials on tobacco hazards were distributed. Further, four rounds of counselling sessions were conducted which included a group counselling with a medical camp as well as individual counselling by trained medical social workers. The control group received general awareness training on tobacco hazards along with an anti-tobacco leaflet. Self-reported smoking status was assessed after 6 and 12 months. Factors associated with tobacco cessation were estimated using binomial regression method. Results: Overall prevalence of smoking abstinence was 14.7% in the intervention and 6.8% in the control group (Relative risk: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.05, 3.25). A total of 41.3% subjects in the intervention area and 13.6% in the control area had reduced smoking by 50% or more at the end of 12 months. Lower number of cigarettes/ bidi used, low nicotine dependence and consultation with a doctor for a medical ailment were the statistically significant predictors for smoking cessation. Conclusions: Rigorous approaches for smoking cessation programmes can enhance quit rates in smoking in rural areas of India.

A study on the late payment behavior of the Consumer Credit (소비자 신용 연체행동에 대한 관련요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to (1) identify sociodemograghic, economic, psychological and use of credit variables that influence the late payment behavior of three types of consumer credit which are service credit, credit card, installment purchasing credit, (2) compare the levels of the credit counselling between the normal payment behavior group and the late payment behavior group about both of the counselling experiences and needs. Data were collected from questionnaires with 337 adults who were residents of Seoul. The major findings are as follows ; (1) There are independently significant probability differences for measure of the sociodemographic, economic, psychological and use of credit variables on dichotomous Logit analysis (2) Both the experience and need levels of credit counselling were concentrated on the family.

The Development and Evaluation of Social Skill Enhancement Group Counselling Program for children in Social Welfare Institutions (아동복지시설 아동의 사회적 기술 향상을 위한 집단상담 프로그램 개발 및 효과검증)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and to verify an effect of a group counselling program for children who are in need of improving social skills and relationships. In order to meet this goal, the study procedure was employed as follows: First, the literature review of studies on childrens in social welfare institutions was implemented. Second, to analyze need of staffs in facilities and to specify the present condition of children, 100 staffs were participated in basic investigation. The result of investigation revealed that social skill development programs should be held in form of total 11~12 sessions once or twice in a week, with 50~60 minutes per session. Third, based on the literature review and current situation investigation results, a program for improving social skills and competencies of children was developed. To verify the program, two groups composed of elementary children who are fourth grade to sixth grade were organized. The groups were a experimental group which was provided with a group counselling program and a control group with no program. The program was composed of twelve sessions throughout six weeks, and the subjects took social skill test after taking the program to verify educational effects. T-test were implemented to analyze difference of the test results of two groups statistically. As a result of a research, following major two findings were specified: (1) experimental group showed significant difference in the score of self-assertion, cooperation, and self-control, which indicates that the program was effective for social skill improvement: (2) according to the test result, the self-assertion, cooperation, and self-control skills were clearly improved. In conclusion, the program turned out to be an effective and a positive educational device to enhance social skills of the children. The program developing model were suggested to improve social skills of children in the state of family devision based on the study findings. The follow-up future studies should elaborate program models for various-aged children and for children with various learning styles. Furthermore, qualitative study method should be employed which can specify social attitude change of children.

Operating Report of a Hospice Cyber Counselling Program (호스피스 사이버상담 프로그램 운영에 대한 소고)

  • Purpose: This study is to report the operating result of the Hospice Cyber Counselling Program for improving quality of lift for terminal patients and their families. Methods: This study was performed followed by counsellor training, building strategy of public relations, management, and evaluation of the effect in order. Results: 72 subjects visited our cyber homepage and became members for approximately 9 months from Oct. 2004 to July 2005; 17 subjects in their 20s (23.6%), 12 subjects in their 30s (16.7%), 17 subjects in their 40s (23.6%), and 13 subjects above 50s (18%). Classified by diagnose related group, cancer related disease consist of 90%. As for the relationship between contents of counselling and counselling applicants, families consist of 90% and self-applicants only 10%. Only 30 members used on-line counselling and their counselling frequency was just 35 times. Although counselling frequency and the number of members who used the counselling site were not high, they tend to contact with a counsellor continuously and use the site actively after the first counselling. Conclusion: Cyber counselling program for hospice was practically managed to improve quality of life for terminal patients and their families as a basic activity for hospice business activation. Basic public relations with regard to hospice business by mass media and the press should be performed continuously and the hospice training program is required for medical personnel to be continue.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and implement the web-based counselling system in aspects of learning type and method by PBL in Constructivism. Learning problem is classified into learning difficulty, learning disability, emotional disability, memory/cognition, ADHD(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), classwork, and school circumstance. Counselling for individual, offline visit, parents, electronic mail, and group with professionals who were involved in the design and implementation of learning counselling were used to supplement the clinic process for learning. The result of this study aims to administer the distance counselling system for learning without prominent computer knowledge. Each learner can solve diverse private learning problems which can be widely applied for situated learning. Also these online strategies by PBL indicate that providing learning types and methods are critical for overall understanding in online counselling system for learning.

Effect of Education and Counselling-based Cardiac Rehabilitation Program on Cardiovascular Risk, Health Behavior and Quality of Life in Elderly with Coronary Artery Disease (교육상담 기반 심장재활 프로그램이 노인 관상동맥질환자의 심혈관 위험도, 건강행위 및 삶의 질에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of education and counselling-based cardiac rehabilitation program on cardiovascular risk, health behavior and quality of life in elderly with coronary artery disease. Methods: A quasi-experimental study used a non-equivalent control group pre-post test design. A five week education and counselling-based cardiac rehabilitation program for the elderly with coronary artery disease was developed and offered to the experimental group. Participants were drawn from hospital in Busan. Twenty two were selected for the experimental group while 22 were assigned to a control group. Cardiovascular risk, health behavior and quality of life were measured. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the cardiovascular risk(U=118.5, p=.002), health behaviors(t=5.200, p=<.001) and quality of life(t=2.431, p=.001) between the experimental group and the control group. Conclusion: Education and counselling-based cardiac rehabilitation program can be not only an effective nursing intervention for old patients having coronary artery disease, but also the very basis of further research on aged people who have the same symptom.

A Survey on the Problems and Conditions of Educational Guidance and Counselling in the Gifted Education Programs (초중등 영재학급·교육원의 학생 생활지도 실태 및 과제 - 영재 담당교사들의 인식을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems and conditions of educational guidance and counselling of teachers in the gifted classes. For the study, 267 teachers were sampled from the Gifted Education Institutes of metropolitan and provincial offices of education and Gifted Classes of the school across Korea, and the questionnaire developed by the researchers were administered to them. The results of this study are as follows : First, the 82% of respondents reported that the guidance and counselling in the gifted education is needed. So it demands the active responsive strategies on it. Second, the respondents reported that the selfish or self-centered traits of the gifted students are the most problematic in the gifted classes. It shows the emphasis should be put on the basic life habits and moral education in the guidance and counselling of the gifted education. Third, they pointed out the case-based education is needed for the parents of the gifted to correct their misconceptions about their children. Fourth, to support the teachers of the gifted program, the administrative measures have to be taken, like operation of character education program, forming a consultative group with the experienced teachers, developing the case-based guideline for the guidance and counselling for the gifted education, etc. Fifth, we should develop the Korean model of the gifted education to promote social capital for our future society.
