  • For the SAT modeling system considering the reaction module which consists of nitrification, denitrification and organic oxidation, an imaginary cross-sectional 2-dimensional model simulation was carried out to analyze the sensitivity of the model. Four parameters, such as hydraulic conductivity, source water loading rate, ground surface pavement and operation schedule, were considered for the sensitivity analysis. Most factors considered in model development step were well reflected in the simulation results.

  • Cause of contamination in the study area nearby Jang Hang Refinery is dust scattering in refinery stack, and soil washing treatment is one of the proper technologies for soil remediation in this area. Site conditions frequently limit the selection of a treatment process. A treatment technology may be eliminated based on the soil classification or physicochemical characteristics of soil. This study was assessed the soil washing efficiency by conducting of soil characteristic analysis in the vicinity of Jang Hang Refinery Stack within a 2 km radius. Also, it was decided about remedial range with comparative analysis of As in soil by Korean Standard Test Method before/after revision, whereupon As concentration in soil showed a increasing tendency after revision. As a result, the soil washing using the size separation of soil was determined through identifying of As species in the soil. In this site, only particle size distribution and water content of soil can provide the initial means of screening for the potential use of soil washing.

  • compounds (VOCs) were selected for assessment of VOCs contamination in some urban runoff and groundwater samples in Seoul. They included 3 aromatic hydrocarbons, 13 alkyl benzenes, 1 ether, 26 halogenated alkanes, 10 halogenated alkenes, and 9 halogenated aromatics. The levels of VOCs in urban runoff and groundwater were measured for samples collected in March 2000, June 2000 and November 2000 in Seoul City. A total of 78 samples (44 run-off water, 27 groundwater, and 7 samples from 4 urban wastewater treatment plants in Seoul) were collected and analysed by GC-MS with purge and trap. After examination of the runoff, it was concluded that alkyl benzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons were organic compounds which were significantly impacted by traffic flows in Seoul. Of 62 VOCs, only 11 VOCs were not detected in runoff samples, while 14 VOCs were detected in 27 groundwater samples. The toluene content in the runoff was extremely variable from 0.1ppb to 29,310ppb, depending on the different sampling sites. The concentrations of xylene ranged between 0.07ppb and 2970ppb in the runoff. The concentrations ranged from 0.05ppb to 33.0ppb for benzene, 0.05ppb to 960ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.08ppb to 20ppb for trichloromethane (chloroform) , 0.03ppb to 4.30ppb for trichloroethylene(TCE) and 0.1ppb to 50ppb for 1,1,2-trichloroethane. From the preliminary study of groundwater from some wells in Seoul, the most frequently detected VOCs are djchlorornethane(methylene chloride), trichloromethane(chloroform) and toluene. Most of aromatic hydrocarbons, alkyl benzenes and other solvents generally lower than detection limits.

  • As the target area of this study, the coal mine site of Dongwon Sabuk mine.,ltd. is located in the remote mountainous region. To purify the acid mine water contaminated with heavy metals, a pilot-scale plant was built at the surrounded area of a mine shaft and operated to simulate active treatment system that could not only possibly setup the facility in a small available area, but also has a high efficiency. According to the various conditions of basin sequence, existence of sludge return, and lime injection position, six different types of treatment series were investigated in terms of treatment efficiency. As a result, the aluminum concentrations of the most effluents were in the range of 0.005~0.030 mg/L, which was too low to compare. The manganese concentration in the treated water were in the range of 3~9 mg/L, not following any regular trend. As found in the results of iron concentration, the case of addition of oxidation and sludge return steps showed higher efficiency than the others. As a standpoint of the installation of full-scale physicochemical treatment facility, the experimental results showed that the batch of oxidation and high density sludge return processes are existed and neutralization was followed by oxidation, had a stable treatment efficiency.

  • The landfarming treatment for the remediation of the petroleum contaminated soil at the returned U.S. Military bases was investigated in this study. Specifically, the bioaugmentation performance using various commercially available petroleum-degrading bacteria was evaluated and the directions for enhancing the performance of the landfarming treatment were suggested. The environmental factors of the soils at the returned U.S. Military bases chosen for remediation indicate that the landfarming treatment can be used as the remediation technique; however, the addition of nitrogen or phosphorus is required. The lab-scale landfarming treatment tests using the model soil and the site soil showed that the degradation efficiency was greater with the model soil than the site soil and that the treatment performance was not affected by the number of bacteria present in the soil in the range of $10^6-10^{12}$ CFU/g. These results suggest that the successful landfarming treatment depends on the petroleum degradability of bacteria used and the environmental conditions during the treatment rather than the number of petroleum-degrading bacteria used.

  • Recently, as a countermeasure to the buoyancy of a building, the use of permanent drainage methods have been on the increase, and these provide benefits both in terms of economical feasibility and efficiency. When a permanent drainage method is applied, some underground water can drain out. Korea has been designated by PAI (Population Action International) as a water-stressed country, and the use of outflowing groundwater is required for the efficient oversight of water resources. However, the evaluation process on the practical use of underground water is currently insufficient. Therefore, the amount of outflowing groundwater put to practical use and the standard for the water quality were examined in this research, with the aim of establishing anappraisal process on the practical use of underground water drainage. In addition, standards for the assessment of the treatment process and the application cost of underground water drainage were developed. On this basis, an evaluation process on the use of outflowing groundwater was developed and applied inthe field. The application result proved that it was possible to assess the initial investment cost and the maintenance and management cost in the field, and thesecan be compared to the costs when supplied water is used, which makes it possible to apply in the field.

  • This study is to concentrate vanadium in Jeju groundwater using reverse osmosis processes, and to utilize the concentrate for vanadium water. Groundwater samples were taken from Wahyul, Ayum, and Seogwipo groundwater wells with different in vanadium content each other. Their vanadiuln concentrations were 31.8, 44.5, and 53.0 ppb, respectively. The rejection coefficients of every component in groundwater were increased with the increase of TMP At the TMP of $8 kg_f/cm^2$, the rejection coefficients of vanadium, sodium, potassium, aluminium, iron, and barium were $97.4%{\sim}99.0%,\;97.7%{\sim}97.8%,\;98.0%{\sim}98.3%,\;94.8%{\sim}97.5%,\;88.0%{\sim}96.4.0%$, and $97.9{\sim}98.0%$, respectively. And those of magnesium, calcium, chromium, mauganese, and strontium in three groundwater were more than 99.0% at the same TMP. It was possible that vanadium contents of Wahyul, Ayum and Seogwipo groundwater were concentrated into 58.6, 118.9, and 165.1 ppb, respectively, by 6 stages treatment at the recovery ratio of 15%. And these concentrated water (vanadium water) did not exceed the permissible drinking water standards.

  • The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics of groundwater in the petroleum contaminated site and to evaluate the applicability of house-type landfarm facilities heated with briquette stoves in winter season. The six monitoring wells were installed at the site where pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were all measured. Also groundwater contaminants, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene and total petroleum hydrocarbon, were analyzed twice. House-type two landfarm facilities ($12m{\times}40m{\times}4.8m$) each installed with four briquette stoves were constructed. During four rounds treatment process, VOCs, moisture, temperature were monitored and soil contaminants were analyzed. The pH was 6.37 and considered subacid and DO was measured to be 3.12 mg/L. The temperature of groundwater was measured to be $9.48^{\circ}C$. The groundwater contaminants were detected only in the monitoring wells within the contaminated area or close to it showing that the groundwater contaminated area was similar to the soil contaminated area. During the landfarm process, 73.3% of VOCs concentration in interior gas was decreased and moisture was lowered from 17.7% to 13.4%. In the morning, at 8:00 am, the temperature was decreased showing soil ($5.5^{\circ}C$) > interior ($4.8^{\circ}C$) > exterior ($3.5^{\circ}C$). In the afternoon, at 2:00 pm, the temperature was soil ($8.6^{\circ}C$) < interior ($9.9^{\circ}C$) < exterior ($11.5^{\circ}C$) with solar radiation. The temperature difference between interior and exterior was $0.7^{\circ}C$ in the morning, but it was $1.6^{\circ}C$ in the afternoon. A total of 130 days were taken for four round landfarm processes. Each process was completed within 33 days showing 80% of cleanup efficiency ($1^{st}$ order dissipation rate(k) = 0.1771).

  • This study analyzed the groundwater quality characteristics according to the main source of pollution and quarter (season) by using data from the pollution exclusive monitoring network in the Gyeongsangnam-do area for five years (2013-2017). The main source of pollution was the industrial complex areas, waste mines, and sewage treatment facilities. The analysis items were field measurement items (water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, oxide reduction potential), positive ions, and negative ions. Water temperature and pH did not vary significantly according to the main source of pollution. In industrial complex areas, the value of electrical conductivity was the highest, and dissolved oxygen value was the lowest. The mean concentration of positive and negative ions was the largest in industrial complex areas, followed by sewage treatment facilities and waste mines. It was shown that the concentration of sodium ion was the highest in industrial complex areas and calcium ion in waste mines and sewage treatment facilities. The concentration of bicarbonate ion was the highest in all main sources of pollution. Water temperature, pH, and concentrations of cations and anions did not vary significantly from quarter to quarter. Of the water quality types, the Na-HCO3 type accounted for the highest proportion, but the Na-Cl type, which has a high possibility of external contamination, accounted for about 20% of the total data in the pollution exclusive monitoring network.

  • It is well known that the inflow of rainwater and the infiltration of groundwater to sewerage (I/I) increase the sewage and burden sewage treatment plants and lower their treatment efficiency. Therefore, it is important to estimate the amount of I/I. In this study, well groundwaters, public water supplies (PWSs), and sewage and rainwater channels were investigated to check whether oxygen and deuterium isotopes could be used as a tool for I/I estimation. This study shows that the isotopic composition of PWS in Jeonju area is very consistent over time and distinctly lighter than the circulating local rainwater (CLR) because it is supplied from Yongdam Dam, which is located about 40 km inland to the east in the mountainous area. Considering the fact that sewage mostly originates from the PWS, we could calculate the amounts of CLR in the sewerage from a monitoring station using unaffected rainwater and tap water as mixing end members. The calculation revealed that the CLR fraction ranged from 50% to 90% depending on observation time. This is well supported by the dilute natures of the sewages at the station. The fraction of PWS in investigated well waters were about 46%, indicating that leaking of PWS is very serious and is an important groundwater source in the study area. Since the infiltration of such groundwater may not alter the isotopic composition of sewage significantly, the actual I/I would be much greater than the calculated ones.
