Seoul Metropolitan Government(SMG) as well as the other local governments should have a role in managing groundwater according to the Groundwater Law. As a guidance of the management and control of groundwater use, this study emphasizes the necessity of the construction of 1 ; 5,000 hydrogeological maps and proposes possble usages of the maps. As expected to be a part of the groundwater GIS database constructed by SMG, the maps can be used as base maps to facilitate the whole processes related to the groundwater development and preservation. For the purpose of the construction of the 1 ; 5,000 hydrogelogical GIS database, we develop the classification system of the hydro-geological entities and their attributes.
The whole objective of two papers in series was to develop the framework of an information management system (IMS) for soil-contaminated sites. In the previous first paper (Hwang et al., 2006), current status of information management in our country and the developed countries was investigated and four suggestions were made. In this work (the second paper), the future-oriented framework for information system of soil contamination sites and several suggestions were made.

Each national groundwater monitoring well showed distinct change patterns in groundwater levels and electrical conductivity (EC) in the Nakdong River Estuary, implying different external forces (EFs) on each well. According to the annual average data in 1997-2020, seawater was invaded into Well C. The desalination rate of -1,062 µS/cm/year represents the adaptive capacity of the well to seawater intrusion. The water levels and EC in Well E responded to precipitation, indicating the low absorptive capacity to climate changes. Meanwhile, Well B showed constant increases in water levels, suggesting that problems by rising groundwater should be considered in the study area where confined aquifers are overlaid by clay aquitards. The other wells showed consistent water levels and EC, indicating resilience to EFs. Here, resilience is the capacity of a well to resist changes by EFs, including the absorptive and adaptive capacity. The resilience of Wells E and F to climate changes was quantitatively compared using a resilience cost (RC). The RC showed Well F was more resilient than Well E, and the bedrock aquifer was more resilient than the alluvium aquifer, supporting the usefulness of RC. The resilience assessment against EFs (e.g., changes in land use and climate) helps sustainable groundwater management.

This study evaluated the hydraulic factors contributing to the decreasing groundwater levels across Jeju island. Time-series data for groundwater level, precipitation, and groundwater usage and information on land use were acquired, and the correlations among them were analyzed to evaluate the causes of the decreasing groundwater. The effects of precipitation and groundwater usage on the fluctuations of groundwater level were quantified using response surface analysis and sensitivity analysis, and methods for groundwater quantity management by region were proposed. The results showed that the rate of groundwater decrease in the western region was larger than that in the eastern region. For the eastern region, the influence of precipitation was large and the rate of decrease in the groundwater level was relatively small. The geological formation of this part of the island and continuous seawater intrusion suggest that although the absolute amount of groundwater extracted for use was large, the decrease in the groundwater level was not seen to be great due to an increase in pressure by seawater intrusion. Overall, precipitation and groundwater usage had the greatest effect on the amount of groundwater in the western region, and thus their data would be most useful for informing groundwater management, whereas other factors (e.g., sea level and the location of the freshwater-seawater transition zone) must be considered when understanding Jeju's eastern region. As the characteristics of groundwater level fluctuations in the eastern and western regions are distinct, an optimal management plan for each region should be proposed to ensure the efficient management of groundwater quantity.
Efficient groundwater management requires accurate information about the water volume used. The pumped volume of groundwater can be indirectly estimated using empirical formulae based on electric power consumption. The purpose of this study is to test the accuracy of this indirect method. The Haean basin in Gangwon is located in a rural area, where majority of the groundwater extracted is used for irrigation. The pumped volume of groundwater indirectly estimated from electricity usage using these empirical formulae was compared with the actual pumped volume determined by conducting experiments on April 29 and May 19, 2017. The field survey collected data on electricity usage, pumped volume, and groundwater levels. Based on this measured data, correlations were calculated between electricity usage and pumping volume, as well as groundwater level and pumping rate. The results show that electricity usage and pumped volume measured for both wells (YHE1 and YHE2) are highly correlated (r=0.99, p<0.001). However, for YHE1, notably, the correlation between the groundwater level and pumping rate was not significant, and only some correlations were identified for these variables for the YHE2 test well. The average error with respect to the estimation of the actual pumped volume from the existing formula (1) and formulae (2) and (3) are +399% and -88%, respectively. To reduce these errors, these formulae need to consider other factors affecting the pumped volume.

Lineament maps are the important tools that may reveal points of groundwater recharge, flow and development. In particular, groundwater flows and yields in mountainous area, composed of crystalline rocks with many fractures, are governed mainly by the lineaments corresponding to fractures, joints and faults. Lineaments may give important information on the best distribution of wells and their management. For two districts; Pohang and Cheonan, the relationship between lineament and groundwater factors was analyzed. To compare groundwater productivity, storativity, and transmissivity of a well site along the distance to lineament, the distances to lineament was regrouped into five groups with an equal range, 100m, for the Pohang district and they are also divided into five groups with an equal range, 150m, for the Cheonan district. From the results of the Spearman Rank Correlation Analysis and Kendall Analysis for each group, the means of SPC and T of wells which are located near lineaments generally have large values. The means of SPC and T show a reverse linear relationship with a lineament distance, but the means of S shows a disperse distribution and no distinct linear relation. Result of the linear regression model between SPC and lineament length density shows that it will be effective to use the lineament length density map when finding the optimal well site on a regional scale.
Nitrate contamination problems from groundwater supplies have been reported throughout many countries in the world, including Korea. Nitrate salts can induce methemoglobinemia and possibly human gastric cancer. To reduce human health risk from nitrate in groundwater supplies, several nitrate risk-management strategies can be developed based on the acceptable level of human health risk, the reasonableness of nitrate-control cost, and the technical feasibility of nitrate-control methods. However, due to a lack of available information, assessing risk, cost and technical feasibility contains elements of uncertainty. In the present paper, a nitrate risk-management methodology using fuzzy sets in combination with a multiobjective decision-making (MODM) technique is developed to assist decision makers in evaluating, with uncertain information, various nitrate risk-management strategies in order to decide a proper strategy.
There is growing interest in groundwater resources to overcome the loss of surface water resources due to climate change. An understanding of the microbial community of aquifers is essential for monitoring and evaluating groundwater contamination, as well as groundwater management. Most microorganisms that inhabit aquifer ecosystems are attached to sediment particles rather than planktonic, as is the case in groundwater. Since sampling aquifer sediment is not easy, groundwater, which contains planktonic microorganisms, is generally sampled in microbial community research. Although many studies have investigated microbial communities in contaminated aquifers, there are only a few reports of microbial communities in uncontaminated or pristine aquifers, resulting in limited information on aquifer microbial diversity. Such information is needed for groundwater quality improvement. This paper describes the ecology and community structure of groundwater bacteria in uncontaminated aquifers. The diversity and structures of microbial communities in these aquifers were affected by the concentration or distribution of substrates (e.g., minerals, organic matter, etc), in addition to groundwater characteristics and human activities. Most of the microbial communities in these uncontaminated aquifers were dominated by Proteobacteria. Studies of microbial communities in uncontaminated aquifers are important to better understand the biogeochemical processes associated with groundwater quality improvement. In addition, information on the microbial communities of aquifers can be used as a basis to monitor changes in community structure due to contamination.

This study is intended to give information on agricultural nonpoint source pollution and transport related to fertilizer application and irrigation practice. Field-simulated soil columns were set up and leaching studies on fertilizer components such as nitrogen and phosphorus were performed. Nitrogen and phosphorus in the leachate showed different trends in each column and nonpoint source pollution in agricultural areas may be expected to depend on planted crops, soil conditions, and climate as well as irrigation and fertilizing management.
