  • This paper presents characteristics of soil ionization when high currents such as lightning and switching surge currents are injected into a grounding rod. Soil ionization phenomena are investigated by using both voltage and current signals recorded by oscilloscope. As a result, a critical electric field intensity($E_C$) for ionization is decreased with reduction of grain size. The pre-ionization resistance($R_1$) and post-ionization resistance($R_2$) at the sand with fine grain size are getting lower with increasing current magnitude. Finally, the time to ionization($t_1$) and ionization current peak($t_2$) of fine grain size are significantly shorter than those of medium grain size.

  • The intake tower of D-dam located in a mountainous area positioned in the left side of the dam and its structure installed alone on the water surface then, can become target of direct lightening. To protect the intake tower from the direct lightening and indirect-lightening, lightening rod installed in the top area of the intake tower and ground pole laid under the surrounding ground. however, because the surrounding ground almost consists of a rock, it is very difficult to obtain the grounding resistance. It is main object to examine the construction plan of the optimum lightening rod equipment and ground pole with measuring the earth specific resistance of the around of the intake tower which is the scheduled area to lay the ground pole with the Wenner's 4-electric pole method and the Schlumberger's method. and using the analysis tool, ESII.

  • We investigated the unbalanced characteristics of the superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) based on YBCO thin films with a single line-to-ground fault. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred, the short circuit current of a fault phase increased about 6 times of transport currents after the fault onset but was effectively limited to the designed current level within 2 ms by the resistance development of the SFCL. The fault currents of the sound phases almost did not change because of their direct grounding system. The unbalanced rates of a fault phase were distributed from 6.4 to 1.4. It was found that the unbalanced rates of currents were noticeably improved within one cycle after the fault onset. We calculated the zero phase currents for a single line-to-ground fault using the balanced component analysis. The positive sequence resistance was reduced remarkably right after the fault onset but eventually approached the balanced positive resistance component prior to the system fault. This means that the system reaches almost the three-phase balanced state in about 60 ms after the fault onset at the three-phase system.

  • This paper describes switching surge analysis on reclosing decision in 154kV combined transmission line with power cables. Reclosing should be operated in combined transmission line based on the technical evaluation because of insulation problem of power cable section. If the surge strikes on power cable, the breakdown can occur at week point of cable insulation. Therefore the detailed analysis is required by considering several conditions such as length ratio of power cable, arrester, fault resistance, charging rate and grounding resistance, etc.. In addition, sheath voltage on IJ(Insulated Joint) is analyzed to confirm the protective level. Simulation is performed by EMTP/ATP. Analysis results show that reclosing can be operated without any special problem by the single line-to-ground fault with fault resistance of $1\Omega$ to $50\Omega$ occurred at the overhead transmission section in 154kV combined transmission lines and trap charge of 100% and 110%.

  • As in the measurement of ground resistance by using the 3 point fall-of-potential method, it is known that the distance of current electrode should be at the point of showing the plateu on the potential curve. But the problem is that it my be practically impossible to meet the condition in actual sites. For solving such a situation, this paper provides the least distance of current electrode according to the analysis for the test-field measurement showing that it is feasible to measure the ground resistance in the two in current electrode distance as the length of driven-rod type electrode and the some district length of mesh electrode.

  • This paper presents a new insulation resistance calculation technique to prevent electric shock and fire accidents due to the dielectric breakdown in the primary insulation section of the IT ground system. The solar power generation market is growing rapidly due to the recent expansion of renewable energy and energy storage systems, but as the insulation is destroyed and fire accidents frequently occur, a device for monitoring the insulation resistance state is indispensable to the IT grounding method. Compared to the conventional algorithm that use a method of multiplying a time constant to a fixed coefficient, the proposed insulation resistance calculation method has a fast response time and high accuracy over a wide insulation resistance range by applying a different coefficient according to the values of the insulation impedance. The proposed dynamic time constant based insulation resistance calculation technique reduces the response time by up to 39.29 seconds and improves the error rate by 20.11%, compared to the conventional method.

  • In this paper, the effects of the position and the angle of the potential probes on the measurements of the ground resistance with the fall-of-potential method are described and the testing techniques to minimize the measuring errors are proposed. The fall-of-potential method is theoretically based on the potential and current measuring principle and the measuring error is primarily caused by the position and angle of auxiliary probes. In order to analyze the relative error for measuring value of ground resistance due to the position of the potential probe, ground resistance were measured in case that the distance of current probe was fixed at 50[m] and the distance of potential probe was located from l0[m] to 50[m]. Also, the potential probe was located at 30[$^{\circ}$], 45[$^{\circ}$], 60[$^{\circ}$], 90[$^{\circ}$] and 180[$^{\circ}$]. As a consequence, relative error decreased with increasing the distance of potential probe and decreasing the angle between current probe and potential probe. The results could be help to determine the position of potential probe when the ground resistance was measured at grounding system.

  • In this study, there are examined to the grounding of lightning protection system and electrical continuity tests in the field. The standard for lightning protection system is different design or construction according to the characteristics of the structure. Ground is measured and compared at least four locations. According to the measured results in the field, the sampled values of the ground resistance are measured $5{\Omega}$ or less and the difference between each value is suitable as $0.2{\Omega}$ or less. The values of the electrical continuity test between ground and metal bodies are measured 3 groups such as isolated portion, the mechanical contacted portion, and the electrical continuity portion measuring $0.2{\Omega}$ or less. It is measured to be less than $0.2{\Omega}$ at all in metal bodies of underground. A metal body installed inside the structure is not isolated, but the resistance values are higher than $0.2{\Omega}$. Therefore, It must be carried out the structure having lightning protection system confirm the LPL(lightning protection level) and design the strategy.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of soil ionization for different water contents, and the parameters associated with the dynamic properties of a simple model grounding system subject to lightning impulse currents. The laboratory experiments for this study were carried out based on factors affecting the soil resistivities. The soil resistivities are adjusted with water contents in the range from 2 to 8% by weight. A test cell with a spherical electrode buried in the middle of the hemispherical container was used. As a result, the electric field intensity $E_c$ initiating ionization is decreased with the reduction of soil resistivities. Also, as the water content increased, the pre-ionization resistance $R_1$ and the post-ionization resistance $R_2$ became lower with increasing current amplitude. The time-lag to ionization $t_1$ and the time-lag to the second current peak $t_2$ at high applied voltages were significantly shorter than those of low applied voltages. It was found that the soil ionization behaviors are highly dependent on the water content and the applied voltage amplitude.

  • In this paper, a device for safety inspection of a guard lamp with an automatic switch which has been recently employed in some local autonomous entities was developed. It is technically enhanced by installing a separate inspection box down below, which allows the inspectors can measure the leakage current, the sound function of the electric leakage breaker(ELB), the insulation resistance and the grounding resistance, on the ground. This inspection box makes the inspectors free from the electric shock by being designed to minimize the potential direct contact with the energized terminals. The deliverables of this paper are expected to contribute to carry out the inspection for the guard lamps safely and effectively.
