Under the research project supported by Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), we have conducted the development of GPR systems for landmine detection. Until 2005, we have finished development of two prototype GPR systems, namely ALIS (Advanced Landmine Imaging System) and SAR-GPR (Synthetic Aperture Radar-Ground Penetrating Radar). ALIS is a novel landmine detection sensor system combined with a metal detector and GPR. This is a hand-held equipment, which has a sensor position tracking system, and can visualize the sensor output in real time. In order to achieve the sensor tracking system, ALIS needs only one CCD camera attached on the sensor handle. The CCD image is superimposed with the GPR and metal detector signal, and the detection and identification of buried targets is quite easy and reliable. Field evaluation test of ALIS was conducted in December 2004 in Afghanistan, and we demonstrated that it can detect buried antipersonnel landmines, and can also discriminate metal fragments from landmines. SAR-GPR (Synthetic Aperture Radar-Ground Penetrating Radar) is a machine mounted sensor system composed of B GPR and a metal detector. The GPR employs an array antenna for advanced signal processing for better subsurface imaging. SAR-GPR combined with synthetic aperture radar algorithm, can suppress clutter and can image buried objects in strongly inhomogeneous material. SAR-GPR is a stepped frequency radar system, whose RF component is a newly developed compact vector network analyzers. The size of the system is 30cm x 30cm x 30 cm, composed from six Vivaldi antennas and three vector network analyzers. The weight of the system is 17 kg, and it can be mounted on a robotic arm on a small unmanned vehicle. The field test of this system was carried out in March 2005 in Japan.

So far systematic and reliable methods for the investigation of track substructure (ballast and subgrade) are not developed yet. This study presents the applicability of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and PBS (Portable Ballast Sampler) to the evaluation of railway trackbed conditions. Including FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) often used to evaluate the subsurface conditions of pavement, the standard system for assessing trackbed conditions will be developed in the future.
Laboratory experiment of polarimetric GPR measurement was conducted for the purpose of estimating subsurface inhomogeneity. Tow realization of inhomogeneous subsurface media were made by burying stone objects of different dimensions in homogeneous dry sand. Polarization ratio of cross polarization to co polarization data were examined to find their obviously distinguishable behavior.
Ballasted track is constructed in consideration of the maintenance. The application time and frequency of MTT(Multiple Tie Tamper) and BS(Ballast Cleaner) depend on track geometry measurements. This paper presents the application of Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD), and Portable Ballast Sampler (PBS) to evaluate the effects of track geometry due to substructure deterioration and to build a reliable substructure evaluation system.
3차원 전파(電波) 전파(傳播)를 위한 시뮬레이션에는 FDTD(Finite Difference Time Domain) 방법을 사용하였다.

Suk-San highway bridge, located on a soft ground environment, had been examined the current condition of settlement estimation throughout G.P.R(Ground Penetrating Radar), general observation and visual observation(video camera & scope). According to the above observations, the ground of this area has sunk about thirty centimeters since 1996. Also, currently, Suk-San highway bridge has been disjoining the gap between the structure and ground. Therefore, it is necessary to fill it up the gap. The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of Sunk-San highway bridge was observed by G.P.R. & general observation etc. and to present the results of repair of Suk-San highway bridge filling the gap up.
A complex seismic survey, which is nondestructive inspection, is used often recently in estimating the location of reclaimed cultural assets. Such a method is the best way to estimate the location of cultural assets most effectively in a short time at a construction site. This study estimated the reclamation location of a cultural asset by using magnetic gradient survey, earth resistivity survey, and ground penetrating radar survey (GPR) in order to figure out the distribution territory in the area with possibility of creation of reclaimed cultural assets in the past. As a result, it was located at +15m on the X axis and +90m on the Y axis on the floor plane coordinate of the study target area. It was shown that the major axis is about 20m long in the north-northeast direction and the width is about 5m. The depth of development distribution of anomaly zone was estimated as about 1.5~3.0m. Geophysical survey is expected to be used as a efficient and accurate way to excavate the reclaimed cultural assets in future.

PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to evaluate different types of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) testing for characterizing the road cavity detection. The impulse and step-frequency-type GPR tests were conducted on a full-scale testbed with an artificial void installation. After analyzing the response signals of GPR tests for detecting the road cavity, the characteristics of each GPR response was evaluated for a suitable selection of GPR tests. METHODS : Two different types of GPR tests were performed to estimate the limitation and accuracy for detecting the cavities underneath the asphalt pavement. The GPR signal responses were obtained from the testbed with different cavity sizes and depths. The detection limitation was identified by a signal penetration depth at a given cavity for impulse and step-frequency-type GPR testing. The unique signal characteristics was also observed at cavity sections. RESULTS : The impulse-type GPR detected the 500-mm length of cavity at a depth of 1.0 m, and the step-frequency-type GPR detected the cavity up to 1.5 m. This indicates that the detection capacity of the step-frequency type is better than the impulse type. The step-frequency GPR testing also can reflect the howling phenomena that can more accurately determine the cavity. CONCLUSIONS :It is found from this study that the step-frequency GPR testing is more suitable for the road cavity detection of asphalt pavement. The use of step-frequency GPR testing shows a distinct image at the cavity occurrences.
A three-dimensional finite difference time-domain modeling algorithm based on staggered grid and considering transmitting and receiving antennas has been developed to simulate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey. This algorithm adopted the subcellular method to simulate the dipole antennas being used in GPR system and added resistors to reduce ringing caused by the reflections at the ends of an antenna. Comparison of the output voltages in the presence of the resistors for half-space said that the ringing and the amplitude of output voltage decreased as the number of resistors increased, and the antenna was designed based upon this result. Radiation patterns were derived to understand the distribution of electric field energy in the planes including or normal to the antenna. The electric field energy concentrated on vertical direction in the plane including antenna more than in normal plane.

GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), developed as a technology for geotechnical investigations such as sinkhole exploration, was used limitedly as a method to resolve undetectable lines in underground facility exploration. To improve the accuracy of underground facility data, the government made it possible to explore underground facilities using a non-metallic pipeline probe from July 2022. However, GPR has a problem in that the exploration rate is lowered in the soil with high moisture content, such as soft soil, such as clay layer, and there is a lot of variation in long-term accuracy. In this study, as a way to improve the accuracy of exploration considering the characteristics of GPR and the environment of underground facilities, we propose a GPR exploration method for underground facilities using permittivity constant correction and pattern analysis of GPR image data. Through this study, the accuracy of underground facility exploration and high reproducibility were derived as a result of field verification applying GPR frequency band and heterogeneous GPR.
