In this study, finite element numerical analysis was performed considering various influence factors(cavity shape and size, pavement thickness and size of traffic load) in order to analyze the impact factors in the underground of the road where the cavity occurred and to evaluate the stability of the ground. In order to verify the reliability of the numerical analysis method applied in this study and the results it was compared and analyzed with the results of previous studies and field measurements. The correlation between the influence factors was analyzed through the distribution of vertical displacement obtained from the numerical analysis results, the distribution of surface settlement and surface settlement, the distribution of the stress ratio, and the distribution of the safety factor. As a result, it was confirmed that as the size of the cavity and traffic load increased and the thickness of the pavement decreased, the vertical displacement and surface settlement at the top of the cavity increased. Also, the shape of the cavity was square, the stability of the ground was significantly reduced compared to the case of a circular cavity. Through these results, it was possible to confirm the overall stability of the lower ground of the road where the cavity was generated.
Structural design of the vertical displacements and shear strains in the earth fill (EF) dams has great importance in the structural engineering problems. Moreover, far fault earthquakes have significant seismic effects on seismic damage performance of EF dams like the near fault earthquakes. For this reason, three dimensional (3D) earthquake damage performance of Oroville dam is assessed considering different far-fault ground motions in this study. Oroville Dam was built in United States of America-California and its height is 234.7 m (770 ft.). 3D model of Oroville dam is modelled using FLAC3D software based on finite difference approach. In order to represent interaction condition between discrete surfaces, special interface elements are used between dam body and foundation. Non-reflecting seismic boundary conditions (free field and quiet) are defined to the main surfaces of the dam for the nonlinear seismic analyses. 6 different far-fault ground motions are taken into account for the full reservoir condition of Oroville dam. According to nonlinear seismic analysis results, the effects of far-fault ground motions on the nonlinear seismic settlement and shear strain behaviour of Oroville EF dam are determined and evaluated in detail. It is clearly seen that far-fault earthquakes have very significant seismic effects on the settlement-shear strain behaviour of EF dams and these earthquakes create vital important seismic damages on the swelling behaviour of dam body surface. Moreover, it is proposed that far-fault ground motions should not be ignored while modelling EF dams.
A new approach of analyzing the displacements and stress of the surrounding rock for shallow tunnels excavated under non-axisymmetric displacement boundary conditions on a vertical surface is investigated in this study. In the proposed approach, by using a virtual image technique, the shear stress of the vertical ground surface is revised to be zero, and elastic solutions of the surrounding rock are obtained before stress revision. To revise the vertical normal stress and shear stress of horizontal ground surface generated by the combined action of the actual and image sinks, the harmonic functions and corresponding stress function solutions were adopted. Based on the Boussinesq's solutions and integral method, the horizontal normal stress of the vertical ground surface is revised to be zero. Based on the linear superposition principle, the final solution of the displacements and stress were proposed by superimposing the solutions obtained by the virtual image technique and the stress revision on the horizontal and vertical ground surfaces. Furthermore, the ground settlements and lateral displacements of the horizontal and vertical ground surfaces are derived by the proposed approach. The proposed approach was well verified by comparing with the numerical method. The discussion based on the proposed approach in the manuscript shows that smaller horizontal ground settlements will be induced by lower tunnel buried depths and smaller limb distances. The proposed approach for the displacement and stress of the surrounding rocks can provide some practical information about the surrounding rock stability analysis of shallow tunnels excavated under non-axisymmetric displacement boundary conditions on a vertical surface.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.

Void ratios are one of the key parameters for exact calculation of settlement of soft groundse. In the study, shear wave velocities of a soft ground were used to measure the field void ratio using bender elements sensors. The bender-element probes were installed in situ at the depths of 3, 5 and 8m on a pre-loading site near Incheon, Korea. During 90 days after installation, the changes of shear wave velocity and ground surface settlement were measured. The field void ratio was estimated from measured shear wave velocities. The void ratio estimated by the shear wave velocity measured by bender elements agrees well with the measured values in the field.

The ground deformation due to the tunnel excavation is dependent on various factors such as ground condition, geometry of the tunnel, excavation method, installation of support members, construction condition of each excavation stage, etc. And the distance from the facing effects significantly the stress conditions of the supported and unsupported ground due to the 3-dimensional structural nature of the excavated tunnel. The concept of ground characteristic line has been applied to properly consider the loading condition given by staged tunnel excavation so that the imaginary supporting pressure is applied against the surface of excavated ground. Discussions on the results of the performed finite element analysis were mainly made with respect to the ground settlement, tunnel displacement, earth pressure, stress mobilized in supporting members.
The theoretical predictions of ground movements induced by tunnelling are usually based on the assumptions that the subsoil has the same soil densities. The theoretical prediction does not consider the impact of different sand soil types on the surface settlement due to tunnelling. The finite elements analysis (FEA) considers stress and strength parameters of the different sand soil densities. The tunnel construction requires the solution of large soil-structure interaction problem. In the present study, the FEA is used to model soil-tunnel system performance based on a case study to discuss surface displacement due to tunnelling. The Greater Cairo metro tunnel (Line 3) is considered in the present study as case study. The surface displacements obtained by surface displacement equation (SDE) proposed by Peck and Schmidt (1969) are presented and discussed. The main objective of this study is to capture the limitations of the parameters used in the SDE based on the FEA at different sand soil densities. The study focuses on the parameters used in the SDE based on different sand soil densities. The surface displacements obtained by the FEA are compared with those obtained by the SDE. The results discussed in this paper show that the different sand soil densities neglected in the SDE have a significant influence on the surface displacement due to tunnelling.

The pipe jacking method which is a non-excavation method is frequently used due to constructability and economical efficiency in a medium or small-sized pipeline construction. However, jacking process of the method still causes problems that the base ground is disturbed and loosen. These lead to surface settlement, strength decrease and leakage of water. Therefore, this study presents in-situ application of the steel pipe jacking with grouting, and it is that jacking and grouting are progressed simultaneously. To verify this, the steel pipe jacking with grouting and the existing steel pipe jacking have been constructed on the same ground condition. It has been proved that the steel pipe jacking with grouting is in-situ applicable according to results of monitoring surface settlement, in-situ density, GPR geophysical prospecting and large scale direct shear test.
Recently, Umbrella Arch Method(UAM) is commonly used in order to enhance the stability of tunnel itself and stabilize the adjacent surface structure. But quantitative estimation of reinforcement effect is needed because UAM is designed and constructed only on the basis of empirical experience. By using 3-dimensional finite element method, parametric study is performed for elastic modulus of ground and overburden, and reinforcement effect is analyzed quantitatively. From the results, surface settlement decreases about 9%∼27% in soil tunnel, about 4%∼24% in weathered rock tunnel and 4%∼17% in soft rock tunnel when applied with UAM. The prediction equation for final surface settlement is suggested through regression analysis and the equation is expressed as exponential function which has variable Smax, unknown coefficient i and k.
