This paper introduces the development of a de-icer based on a full-bridge modular multilevel converter (FMMC). The FMMC can generate a wide range of DC voltages owing to its modularity, scalability, and redundancy, which makes it suitable for ice-melting applications. First, operating principles and voltage ranges are analyzed when FMMC is applied as a mobile de-icer. Second, two new startup strategies, constant modulation index and constant power startup strategies, are proposed. Third, the main control strategies of the de-icer are proposed. Fourth, a novel rated-current zero-power test scheme is proposed to simplify test conditions. Finally, a 10 kV 1.5 kA mobile MMC de-icer is designed and built, and experiments are carried out to validate the proposed startup, control strategies, and rated-current zero-power test scheme.
In battery-operated systems, an isolated converter is used to interface the utility grid with the system to increase stability when charging and discharging batteries. Systems such as vehicle-to-grids (V2Gs), on-board chargers, and energy storage systems (ESSs) have recently become popular, and the roles of isolated converters have become important considerations in fabricating such devices. A fixed-frequency LLC converter, which is a type of isolated converter, presents the advantages of high efficiency and high power density by performing zero-voltage switching (ZVS) over wide frequency ranges. However, the magnetizing inductance of the LLC converter should be designed to enable ZVS in all switching devices. Therefore, in this study, the operating characteristics of the LLC circuit are analyzed, and an optimal design method for ZVS operation is established. Moreover, an 8 kW LLC high-efficiency and high-power-density resonant converter is designed and tested for ESS application. The LLC converter achieves 98% efficiency at rated power.
The DC circuit breaker is essential for supplying stable DC power with the advent of DC transmission/distribution and sensitive loads. Compared with mechanical circuit breakers, which must interrupt a very large fault current due to their slow breaking capability, a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) can quickly break a fault current almost within 1 [ms]. Thus, it can reduce the damage of an accident a lot more than mechanical circuit breakers. However, previous DC SSCBs cannot perform the operating duty, and are not economical because many SCR are required. Therefore, this paper proposes a new DC SSCB suitable for DC grids. It has a low semiconductor conduction loss, quick reclosing and rebreaking capabilities. As a result, it can perform the operating duties of reclosing and rebreaking. The proposed DC SSCB is designed and implemented so that it is suitable for home dc distribution at a rated power of 5 [kW] and a voltage of 380 [V]. The operating characteristics are confirmed by simulation and experimental results. In addition, this paper suggests design guidelines so that it can be applied to other DC grids. It is anticipated that the proposed DC SSCB may be utilized to design and realize many DC grid systems.
This paper deals with the blocking of DC-fault current during DC cable short-circuit conditions in HVDC (High-Voltage DC) transmission systems utilizing Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs), where a new SubModule (SM) topology circuit for the MMC is proposed. In this SM circuit, an additional Insulated-Gate Bipolar Translator (IGBT) is required to be connected at the output terminal of a conventional SM with a half-bridge structure, hereafter referred to as HBSM, where the anti-parallel diodes of additional IGBTs are used to block current from the grid to the DC-link side. Compared with the existing MMCs based on full-bridge (FB) SMs, the hybrid topologies of HBSM and FBSM, and the clamp-double SMs, the proposed topology offers a lower cost and lower power loss while the fault current blocking capability in the DC short-circuit conditions is still provided. The effectiveness of the proposed topology has been validated by simulation results obtained from a 300-kV 300-MW HVDC transmission system and experimental results from a down-scaled HVDC system in the laboratory.
In photovoltaic system, the characteristic of photovoltaic module such as open circuit voltage and short circuit current will be changed because of cell temperature and solar radiation. Therefore, a boost converter of the PV system connects between the output of photovoltaic system and DC link capacitor of grid connected inverter as controlling duty ratio for maximum power point tracking(MPPT). This paper shows the dynamic characteristic of the boost converter by comparing single-loop control algorithm and two-loop control algorithm using both analog and digital control. The proposed both compensation method has been verified with computer simulation and simulation results obtained demonstrate the validity of the proposed control schemes.
This paper proposes efficient operation method of PV system consisted of multi-central which is suitable for large scale system. The multi-central system used switch at a DC-link and applied proposed algorithm can improve the efficiency and the reliability on the existing system. This algorithm, with advantage of Multi-Central system can minimize the effect of different characteristic of each PV array due to a shadow or damaged PV cell. Each system is analysed and maximum power point tracking control, DC-link voltage control and output current control is used commonly. The validity is verified after comparing of the existing system and proposed system by simulation.
In accordance with the policy of local government, the large scale of wind farms have been installed in Jeju power system. However, The intermittent characteristics of wind power output may cause grid voltage and frequency variation, especially in weak power system. One of the solution to solve this problem is installation of Energy storage system (ESS). In this case, the ESS will regulate the active power generated from wind farm to mitigate fluctuation. Actually, the local government of Jeju island constructed ESS connected to Hangwon wind turbine in 2016. From this point, this paper analyzes requirement capacity of ESS to mitigate wind power fluctuation based on measured data from Hangwon wind turbine and ESS. The simulation results will be carried out by Matlab program.
OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)은 다수개의 낮은 데이터 율의 반송파들이 높은 전송율을 이루는 형태로 송신기에서 조합되는 변조 기법이다.
현재 고창에 설치되어있는 전력품질 실증시험장은 22.9kV 급전선에 SSTS(Synchronous Static Transfer Switch)의 한쪽 스위치로 직접 연결되어있으며 다른 한 쪽은 전력계통에서 발생되는 다양한 형태의 이벤트를 발생시키는 SSHG(Sag Swell Harmonics Generator)를 통하여 연결되어있다. 전력품질 향상기기중 하나인 DVR(Dynamic Voltage Restorer)는 SSTS의 부하쪽으로 직렬로 연결되어있으며 delta-wye 변압기를 통해 정류기 부하와 APF(Active Power Filter), 그리고 순저항부하와 유도성부하가 연결되어 있고 또한 SSHG를 통하여 연결된 배전선에는 DSTATCOM(Distribution Static Compensator)가 병렬로 연결되어있다.
Photovoltaic (PV) power generation system has been widely studied as a clean and renewable power source. The purpose of this study is to keep the output power of photovoltaic cells maximum under any weather conditions. There are so many MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) methods. P&O method has been used as a key MPPT method, both voltage and current coming out from PV array have to be feedback in the method. Thus, the system has a complex structure, and may fail to track MPP of PV array when unexpected weather conditions happen. In order to reduce the feedback components, POS MPPT control method was proposed by the authors. In this paper, the authors apply the POS MPPT control method to three phase PCS system. And the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.
