  • Updating a forest type map is essential for sustainable forest resource management and monitoring to cope with climate change and various environmental problems. According to the necessity of efficient and wide-area forestry remote sensing, CAS500-4 (Compact Advanced Satellite 500-4; The agriculture and forestry satellite) project has been confirmed and scheduled for launch in 2023. Before launching and utilizing CAS500-4, this study aimed to pre-evaluation the possibility of satellite-based tree species classification using RapidEye, which has similar specifications to the CAS500-4. In this study, the study area was the Chuncheon forest management complex, Gangwon-do. The spectral information was extracted from the growing season image. And the GLCM texture information was derived from the growing and non-growing seasons NIR bands. Both information were used to classification with random forest machine learning method. In this study, tree species were classified into nine classes to the coniferous tree (Korean red pine, Korean pine, Japanese larch), broad-leaved trees (Mongolian oak, Oriental cork oak, East Asian white birch, Korean Castanea, and other broad-leaved trees), and mixed forest. Finally, the classification accuracy was calculated by comparing the forest type map and classification results. As a result, the accuracy was 39.41% when only spectral information was used and 69.29% when both spectral information and texture information was used. For future study, the applicability of the CAS500-4 will be improved by substituting additional variables that more effectively reflect vegetation's ecological characteristics.

  • In this study, the properties such as color, dye uptake and antibacterial function were examined through the application of combination dyeing and mixed dyeing with extracts from Humulus japonicus(hwansam) and the pruned branches of Prunus persica(peach) tree. In terms of dye uptake and surface color changes subject to the kind of mordants, methods and mixing ratio of dye, it was found that fabrics dyed by the pre-mordanting method with $CuSO_4$ showed the red green yellow group colors, which were not seen in fabrics dyed with hwansam only. Color fastness was found strong at grade 4-5 with 96.3% of UV protection ratio. While the fastness to light was as fair as grade 3, it showed an excellent result of 99.9% bacteria reduction rate against Staphylococcus aureus with fair 58% deodorization rate and 21.2% antibacterial rate against Klebsiella pneumoniae. As stated above, the combination and mixed dyeing resulted in the meaningful outcomes with regard to color variations, dye uptake, color fastness and functional properties.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the vacuum drying characteristics of 50mm- and 75mm- thick tree disks of some domestic softwoods for substituting the conventional hardwoods as the materials for wood crafts. Though the elapsed drying times from green to in-use moisture content(MC) were largely shortened by vacuum drying, the tree disks treated by EWS couldn't be dried to in-use MC, and so sapwood stains also were occurred severely. We suggest EWS treatment is undesirable for the species with very high sapwood portion or vacuum drying with hot water circulation heating system. Heart checks were slight, but sapwood checks, which have never been trouble in drying process of tree disks, were severe. For the reasonable explanation it is suggested MC differences between sapwood and heartwood were large and most of tree disks had already no barks before drying test. Ginkgo was vacuum-dried with very slight drying defects such as heart checks, sapwood checks. V-cracks and sapwood stains. In Korean red pine and pitch pine V-cracks were severely occurred. And it was found the special feature that most of these defected tree disks contained several V-cracks within one tree disk. It can be considered as the causes that the region of sapwood was defected by the several checks at the early drying stage because of the steep MC gradient along the radial direction, and then at the later drying stage the drying stresses due to differential shrinkage were concentrated on these brittle spots.

  • The insecticidal activity of 124 plant essential oils and control efficacy of six experimental spray formulations (SF) containing 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10% of the selected oils was examined against both nymph and adult of the citrus flatid planthopper, Metcalfa pruinosa using direct contact applications (leaf dipping and spray). Reponses varied according to dose (1,000 and 500 mg/L). When exposed at 1,000 mg/L for 24 h using leaf dipping assay, 19 essential oils showed strong mortality (100%) among 124 essential oils screened. At 500 mg/L, 100% mortality was observed in cinnamon technical, cinnamon green leaf, cinnamon #500, cassia tree, citronella java and pennyroyal followed by origanum, thyme white, grapefruit, savory, fennel sweet, aniseed and cinnamon bark showed considerable mortality (93.3-80%) against nymphs of M. pruinosa. The moderate mortality (73.3-60%) was found in thyme red, tagetes, calamus, lemoneucalptus and geranium. Oils applied as SF-10% sprays provided 100 % mortality against adult M. pruinosa. One hundred mortalities were achieved in cinnamon technical at >SF-0.5 formulation, in cinnamon #500, cinnamon green leaf and penny royal at >SF-2.5. To reduce the level of highly toxic synthetic insecticides in the agricultural environment, the active essential oils as potential larvicides could be provided as an alternative to control M. pruinosa populations.

  • Characteristics of fecal sites of the Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans was analyzed based on 132 sites of total 19 places. The fecal sites were more frequently found in winter (43.9%), and then followed by autumn (27.3%), spring (23.5%), and summer (5.3%). With the exception of summer, the fecal sites were more frequently found at the root collar than on the forked tree (p<0.01). Among 132 fecal sites, 88 sites (66.7%) were found on the rood collars and the other 44 sites (33.3%) were posited in the forked trees. Brown or red clay pellets were found at 44 fecal sites (33.4%) and 43 fecal sites (32.6%), and then black and yellow pellets were at 22 fecal sites (16.7%) and 19 fecal sites (14.3%), respectively. Green pellets were rarely found only at 4 sites (3.0%). Feces tend to have bright colors (brown, red clay and yellow) in winter and black in summer. Fecal sites with yellow pellets were much less found in all of the three seasons with the exception of winter, but highly increased in 25.4% in winter. The fecal sites with brown (33.4%) and red clay pellets (32.6%) were most frequently found through the four seasons.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate nutrient production of both orchardgrass and several clovers as a green manure in a 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyriforia) orchard. The experiment was conducted at diligent farmer in Boseong in Chonnam on March 26 of 2010, and the treatments included; 1) orchard grass (2.0kg/$1,000m^2$), 2) orchard grass (1.0kg/$1,000m^2$)+ladino clover (1.0 kg/$1,000m^2$), 3) orchard grass (1.0kg/$1,000m^2$)+red clover (1.0kg/$1,000m^2$), and 4) orchard grass (1.0kg/$1,000m^2$) +white clover (1.0kg/$1,000m^2$). Lengths of orchardgrass and clovers were greater in July than those of June and September. Seeding of orchardgrass without clovers in June and July increased dry weight of green manure crops compared with the seeding of orchardgrass with clovers, resulting in greater annual total dry weight. Various green manure treatments produced different amounts of total N and $P_2O_5$ from each raw materials and did not satisfy amounts of those nutrients for proper annual growth of ten- to twelve-year-old pear tree. Amounts of $K_2O$ producing from green manures, however, satisfied for proper growth of the pear trees.

  • Shoos-in in Nara of Japan has two kinds of Priest's robe(Kasa : 袈裟) ; one is Jiksung Kasa(織成袈裟), the other Janap Kasa(刺納袈裟). The former is listed as the 'Jiksung Kasa of tree bark color in seven stripes' in the Treasures Record(珍寶帳) of objects dedicated by Empress Komyo on the 21st day of the 6th month 756 A.D. The warp threads are brown and the weft threads are in groups of two in two colors-dark blue, green yellow and red. The latter is the so called Janap Kasa, of tree bark colors in seven stripes, that was also dedicated by Empress Komyo, 'Ja' means to stitch, and 'Nap' means to sew. It is made of patches of silk of various color, placed overlapping one another in patterns the resemble a mountainous landscape. All are stitched together in a continous quilt-like manner with purple threads. Japan has been under the strong influence of Korea Buddhism during the Nara period. Acording to Nihonki(日本書紀) and Sokunihonki(續日本紀), from 668 to 769 A.D., Japan has bought numorous objects including Buddhist utensils such as priest's robes and banners from Korea. Also during the same period Japan has perchased many kinds of dyestuffs and paint. So we can be certain that priest’s robes were imported from Korea like many other objects of Shoso-in.

  • We attempt to classifing method of micro-landform on the alluvial plain, such as natural-levee, backmarsh and alluvial fan, using false color composite of Landsat Thematic Mapper image. The study area is Kumho River Basin on the southeastern part of Korea peninsula. The most effective image for micro-landform classification is the false color composite of band 2, 3 and 4 with blue, green and red filtering. The most favorable time is the middle third of November, because of the density differentiation of green vegetation in most great. In this time the paddy field on the back-marsh is bare by rice harvesting. But on the natural levee the green vegetation, such as vegetables and lower herbs under fruit tree, remain relatively more. On the alluvial fan, the green vegetation condition is medium. For the verification of the micro-landform classification, we employed the field survey and grain size analysis of the deposition of each micro-landform on the sample area. It is clarified that the classification method of micro-landform on the alluvial plain using the Landsat TM image is relatively useful.

  • This study was carried out to characterize 127 recently developed cultivars of Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus spp.) in Korea and foreign Countries for landscape uses. The examined factors were growth characteristics such as tree height of a 1-year grafted plant(cm), plant type, growth habit, leaf characteristics such as shape and size, flower characteristics such as color, shape, size, and red eye during 2014 and 2015 for landscape uses. The results are obtained as follows; Hibiscus hybrid 'Daewangchun', 'Daeil', 'Lohengrin', 'Yeonam', 'Joomong', 'Jina', and H. syriacus 'Honggarosu' had vigorous shoot growth and tall tree size of 100cm. New Hibiscus cultivars, Hibiscus hybrid 'Daewangchun' and 'Daeil', having vigorous growth, uniform plant habit, upright, and compact branches were developed through interspecific crosses between H. syriacus 'Samchully' (♀) and H. sinosyriacus 'Seobong' (♂). This newly developed cultivar 'Daewangchun', 'Daeil', 'Lohengrin', 'Yeonam', 'Joomong', 'Jina', and H. syriacus 'Honggarosu' having tall vigorous growth d unique flower with long red eye can be used as street tree or specimen plant in landscape. Otherwise, H. syriacus 'Tamla', 'Melrose', 'Bidan', 'Hi Lea', 'Byeollee', 'Byunghwa', 'Mibak', 'Hanyang', 'Chungam', 'Lil Kim Violet', 'Jongmoo', 'Eunhasu', Hibiscus hybrid 'Saehanseo', and Hibiscus hybrid 'Yousoon' were selected as small tree of 30~39cm. They had dwarf form in tree seemed to be suitable for pot or flower bed planting on both indoor and outdoor conditions. H. syriacus 'Antong', 'Chungjo', and 'Lil Kim' were less than 30 cm of tree size. H. syriacus 'Antong', 'Chungjo', and 'Lil Kim', characterized by its compact, upright and outwardly spreading plant habit; freely branching habit; dark green-colored leaves; good garden performance. Therefore, the new cultivars with tall and small tree size were a promising cultivar as a ground covers or pot planting as woody landscape plant.
