  • The 15 month pilot study was performed to investigate the effect of pretreatment by monochloramine ($NH_2Cl$) on the performance of RO membranes made of cellulose acetate (CA) and polyamide (PA). Both RO membranes experienced severe biological fouling without any pretreatment during the treatment of highly organic surface water in Florida, USA. Feed monochloramination at 5 mg/L significantly minimized productivity loss by effective control of biofouling. The CA membrane did not show any structural damages by monochloramine, while the PA membrane suffered from a gradual loss of membrane integrity by chlorine oxidation, which was characterized as an increase in productivity and a decrease in selectivity. The degradation of PA membrane increased with increasing monochloramine dose.

  • For studying the reaction mechanism of the reactions related to NO in the ozone denitration reactions, the harmonic and anharmonic rate constants were calculated by the transition state (TS) theory and Yao and Lin (YL) method. According to above calculations, the reactions of NO with O3 and NO3 play an essential role, and the kinetic parameters considering anharmonic effect were fitted. Furthermore, the rate constants were up as temperature increasing, and the tendencies of high temperature were more gradual than the low temperature. The research will provide theoretical basis for the ozone denitration reactions.

  • Two-photon fluorescence microscopy was performed on the enamel-dentin junction area of a human tooth using a femtosecond pulsed laser. We obtained a clear image contrast between the bright dentin and dark tubules with the autofluorescence generated from the endogenous fluorophores in dentin. The autofluorescence shows a broad spectrum due to complex cross links between dentinal collagens, which extend from blue to orange wavelengths (470-590 nm), but a gradual autofluorescence loss in photobleaching was observed for a long-term exposure under strong excitation. For increasing excitation power, we found that two-step decay becomes significant in the spectrally integrated autofluorescence.

  • The need for synthetic automation is increasing in preparation for a gradual decrease in laboratory research manpower due to low birth rate and aging. In this study, the existing laboratory synthesis method is analyzed based on the systems engineering technique. Then, it led to the derivation of the system requirements for a fixed-based robot manipulator capable of recognition, decision and control. The robot is equipped with replaceable modular end-effectors and designed depending on the purpose and process of the synthesis. The robot with an end-effector was implemented as PoC(Proof-of-Concept), and the functions for pipetting automation was verified.

  • The number of laparosocpic liver resection performed every years has been increasing. There is a trend than more major hepatectomy and complex liver resection is being reported. However there has been a major obstacles in many centers because open liver resection is still considered as a gold standard and many surgeons are still getting used to the old method of liver resection. To start a new procedure, education and training is essential in order to achieve a good outcome without compromising the safety of the patients. A gradual progression is crucial in order to avoid dreadful complication. The development of the consensus meeting and difficulty score has facility the understanding of safe practice in the development of laparoscopic liver resection. In a long run, development of registry system will improve transparency and safety of this operation.

  • The optional ingredient jasoja(Perillae semen) was adopted to improve Dongchimi in qualify during fermentation The final weight percentage of jasoja in Dongchimi was adjusted to 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0% Per radish. Physicochemical characteristics were determined during fermentation for 45 days at 10$^{\circ}C$. As the fermentation of Dongchimi proceeded, the pH decreased with the increase of total acidity; however, the decreasing rate was slowed down by increasing the level of jasoja. The delayed pH drop of Dongchimi was limited only for the initial period of fermentation and the ultimate pH became almost comparable even for the 1% treatment. The total vitamin C content increased initially to a certain level depending on the level of jasoja, and then decreased later. Dongchimi with 0.5% jasoja contained the highest level of total vitamin C and reducing sugars. In case of 1% treatment, the typical pattern of an initial high content followed by a gradual decrease in reducing sugar was destroyed by a rapid fermentation at the later stage. Turbidity level, along with total solid contents of the liquid part of Dongchimi increased in all treatments as the fermentation proceeded although the extent was rather suppressed by jasoja. As a result of fermentation, the colorimetric lightness values decreased, with the intial increase followed by the decrease at a certain point in redness and yellowness and the increase in color difference values (ΔE). Overall, fermentation with 0.5% jasoja for 11 to 30 days appeared to improve the quality of Dongchimi.

  • Since non-corrosive Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) tendons have been in increasing use for underground and coastal structures constantly contacted with fresh water or sea water because of their superiority to metallic ones in corrosion-resistance, new non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons has been developed and investigated to verify the effectiveness of tendon force, which consist of mainly FRP pipes and Highly Expansive Mortar(HEM). The major factors considered in this experiment were expansive pressures of HEM during its hydration, sleeve lengths and types, and anchoring methods of tendon. New anchoring system were investigated from the pull-out tests. The pull-out procedures of the FRP tendons in the various pipe filled with HEM were analyzed and improved ideas were suggested to develop novel non-metallic anchoring system for FRP tendons The pull-out tests for the FRP tendon and new non-metallic anchoring system were conducted. The results show that non-metallic anchoring system for the FRP tendon has been more stablized due to the gradual expansive pressrure of HEM, as tims goes. Since tile lower stiffness of FRP pipes causes the weakness of anchoring force, it requires the increase of stiffness using a carbon fiber or an increased section area.

  • The aim of the study was to identify which fall-prevention program offered in community settings in Korea is the most effective in strengthening muscles. Muscle weakness is one of the major risk factors causing falls among the elderly. Randomized controlled trials and clinical controlled trials published between 1996 and February 2011 were included in this study. Seventeen of the 69 identified studies met the study's criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. The overall effect size of the program was .822 (95% confidence interval= .717~.927). The general strengthening exercise (1.608), dance sports training (1.538), Thera-band exercise for lower extremities (1.517), Seniorobic exercise (1.146), gait training (.959), balance training (.909), gradual resistive exercise (.888), and multifactorial fall prevention (.842) programs all show positive effects on muscle strengthening. Subgroup analyses found that more relative effects are seen in programs offered to the more elderly. In this study, the effect of increasing muscle strength on the prevention of falls can only be indirectly suggested; there are few available studies that report the frequency or history of falls in Korea. Further studies are needed to examine the direct effect of fall prevention exercise programs among the elderly.

  • Buserties are known to have layer structures with variable C dimension which depended on the nature interlayer catious and contents of water molecular between edge-sharing [MnO6] octabedral layers. Na-, Ca-, Mg-, and Zn-buserties were synthesized in the laboratory and studied for to know the structural states of water molecules and the role of catious in the buserite structures. With lowering the relative humidity(RH), Ca-buserite begins to dehydrate at 27% RH and proceeds further very slowly. Mg- and Zn- buserite also slow dehydration above 2% RH. With gradual ineveasing temperature Ca- and Zn-buserite show abrupt shifting of 10$\AA$ peak (10$\AA$-phare) toward 7$\AA$ peak. All of 7$\AA$-phare are further dehydrated to 5$\AA$-phare by further increasing temperature. It suggests that interlayer catious play a crucial role in the dehydration behavious of buserites. Simulation of one-dimensional X-ray diffraction patterns of buserties show that buserites have three layers of water molecules of different types: the very loosely bound and tightly bend waters, instead of two layers that was regarded by previous authers. The very loosely bound water is sited I open space of the interlayer, the loosely bound water is bound on the tightly bound water by hydrogen bond, and the tightly bond water in coodinately bound on the interlayer catious.

  • Korean tremoitic talc, wollastonite and clay have been used to develop a wall tile body to appropriate to the fast firing process. Some of ceramic properties of the raw materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and chemical analysis. The body compositions were formulated from the range of 35~75% tremolitic talc, 0~30% wollastonite and 25~35% plastic clay. Thermal gravity analysis and thermal expansion were tested for each of unfired bodies to study the correlation between thermal dehydration and linear shrinkage during the firing procedure. Linear shrinkage and water absorption of the fired bodies at the various temperature were taken as a measures for determining the proper firing range of the bodies. Increasing the content of wollastonite and firing temperature, the thermal expansion of the fired body showed the gradual decrease, and the thermal expansion curves showed a tendency to straighten. These observations may be resulted from the fact that the amounts of diopside and anorthite formed were gradually increased and those of quartz relatively decreased. The optimum compositions of the wall tile bodies for fast firing are 30% clay, 10~20% wollastonite and 50~60% tremolitic talc.
