  • During hot pipe bending using induction heating, the wall of bending outside is thinned by tensile stress. In design requirement, the reduction of wall thickness is not allowed to exceed 12.5%. So in this study, two methods of bending, one is loading of reverse moment and the other is loading of temperature gradient, have been investigated to design pipe bending process that satisfy design requirements. For this purpose, finite element analysis with a bending radius 2Do(outer diameter of pipe) has been performed to calculate proper reverse moment and temperature gradient to be applied. Induction heating process has been analyzed to estimate influence of heating process parameters on heating characteristic by finite difference method. Then pipe bending experiments have been performed for verification of finite element and finite difference analysis results. Experimental results are in good agreement with the results of simulations.

  • This paper aims at investigating the characteristics of discharge capacity according to lateral pressure, hydraulic gradient and deformation of drain materials. A series of experiments were conducted to achieve this objective. In experiments, fiver drain boards as well as harmonica and castle types of drain boards were installed in a rubber membrane, and clay in sully was filled around them. The test results showed that the harmonica type of drain boards have the greatest discharge capacity comparing to castle and fiber drain boards. The results also indicated that the hydraulic gradient has more effect on reduction of discharge capacity than the lateral pressure.

  • In this paper, a hardware architecture of low area gradient magnitude calculator is proposed. For the hardware complexity reduction, the characteristic of orthogonal projection vector and hardware resource sharing technique are applied. The proposed hardware architecture can be implemented without degradation of the gradient magnitude data quality since the proposed hardware is implemented with original algorithm. The FPGA implementation result shows the 15% of logic elements and 38% embedded multiplier savings compared with previous work using Altera Cyclone VI (EP4CE115F29C7N) FPGA and Quartus II v15.0 environment.

  • In this paper the self-organized and fuzzy inference used stochastic gradient ascent method is proposed. Fuzzy rule and fuzzy set increase as occasion demands autonomously according to the observation information. And two rules(or two fuzzy sets)becoming to be similar each other as progress of learning are unified. This unification causes the reduction of a number of parameters and learning time. Using fuzzy inference and making a rule with an appropriate state division, our proposed method makes it possible to construct a robust reinforcement learning system.

  • The paper presents a method for location of subsurface UXOs. The approach utilities gradient interpretation techniques (analytic signal, horizontal gradient and Euler methods) to locate the objects. Then, linear least-squares technique, we obtain the magnetization location of the sources. We demonstrate the practical utility of the method using marine magnetic field data.

  • For principal component analysis (PCA) to efficiently analyze large scale matrices, it is crucial to find a few singular vectors in cheaper computational cost and under lower memory requirement. To compute those in a fast and robust way, we propose a new stochastic method. Especially, we adopt the stochastic variance reduced gradient (SVRG) method [11] to avoid asymptotically slow convergence in stochastic gradient descent methods. For that purpose, we reformulate the PCA problem as a unconstrained optimization problem using a quadratic penalty. In general, increasing the penalty parameter to infinity is needed for the equivalence of the two problems. However, in this case, exact penalization is guaranteed by applying the analysis in [24]. We establish the convergence rate of the proposed method to a stationary point and numerical experiments illustrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper addresses an application of a fiber volume fraction gradients to reduce the interlaminar forces of fiber reinforced composites subjected to thermal loadings. The degree of the reduction in the interlaminar forces may be expressed by introducing a new parameter, so called, the interlaminar force parameter. Several cases of stacking sequences and models for fiber volume fraction gradients prove the availability of the new parameter which is defined in this study.

  • In an effort to construct a structure under the design principle of minimal use of materials for maximum performances, a discrete gradient structure has been introduced in laminate composite systems. Using a sequential linear programming method, the gradient structure of composites to maximize the buckling load was optimized in terms of fiber volume fraction and thickness of each layer. The buckling load showed maximum value with the outmost [$0^{\circ}$] layer concentrated by almost all the fibers when the ratio of length to width(aspect ratio) was less than 1.0. But when the aspect ratio was 2.0, the optimum was determined in a structure where the thickness and fiber volume fraction were well-balanced in each layer. From the optimization of gradient structure, the optimal fiber volume fraction and thickness of each layer were proposed. Gradient structures have also shown an advantage in the weight reduction of composites compared with the conventional homogeneous structures.

  • With the improvement of computer hardware, GPUs(Graphics Processor Units) have tremendous memory bandwidth and computation power. This leads GPUs to use in general purpose computation. Especially, GPU implementation of compute-intensive physics based simulations is actively studied. In the solution of differential equations which are base of physics simulations, tridiagonal matrix systems occur repeatedly by finite-difference approximation. From the point of view of physics based simulations, fast solution of tridiagonal matrix system is important research field. We propose a fast GPU implementation for the solution of tridiagonal matrix systems. In this paper, we implement the cyclic reduction(also known as odd-even reduction) algorithm which is a popular choice for vector processors. We obtained a considerable performance improvement for solving tridiagonal matrix systems over Thomas method and conjugate gradient method. Thomas method is well known as a method for solving tridiagonal matrix systems on CPU and conjugate gradient method has shown good results on GPU. We experimented our proposed method by applying it to heat conduction, advection-diffusion, and shallow water simulations. The results of these simulations have shown a remarkable performance of over 35 frame-per-second on the 1024x1024 grid.

  • In order to characterize the ecological traits of Quercus acutissima, Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica, which dominated in Korean mountain, we treated the sapling of the three oak species under the major environment factors (light, soil moisture and nutrient) with four gradient levels, for 8 months in glass house. Then we measured and analyzed the growth difference among them. The growth of Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis were increased with higher light intensity, but there is no apparent trend in Q. mongolica for light gradients. Q. mongolica did not show high reduction of growth, even in the lowest light intensity. Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica had a constant growth state to soil moisture treatment, but only Q. acutissima grew well in higher soil moisture gradient condition. All the growth of three oak species decreased with higher nutrient gradient condition. The growth reduction was increased in order of Q. variabilis, Q. mongolica and Q. acutissima. with increased nutrient gradient level. These results means that Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis have adaptation ability to shade, high moisture and low nutrient condition, respectively.
