In this article, the mechanical buckling analysis of simply-supported functionally graded plates is carried out using a higher shear deformation theory (HSDT) in conjunction with the stress function method. The proposed formulation is variationally consistent, does not use a shear correction factor and gives rise to a variation of transverse shear stress such that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically through the thickness satisfying the surface conditions without stress of shear. The properties of the plate are supposed to vary across the thickness according to a simple power law variation in terms of volume fraction of the constituents of the material. Numerical results are obtained to study the influences of the power law index and the geometric ratio on the critical buckling load.
Background: Subjects with frozen shoulder (FS) might not be comfortable with vigorous physical therapy. Clinical trials assessing the effect of graded motor imagery (GMI) in FS are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of GMI as an adjunct to conventional physiotherapy in individuals with painful FS. Methods: Twenty subjects aged 40-65 years having stage I and II of FS were randomly divided into two study groups. The conventional physiotherapy group (n = 10) received electrotherapy and exercises while the GMI group (n = 10) received GMI along with the conventional physiotherapy thrice a week for 3 weeks. Pre- (Session 1) and post- (Session 9) intervention analysis for flexion, abduction, and external rotation range of motion (ROM) using a universal goniometer, fear of movement using the fear avoidance belief questionnaire (FABQ), pain with the visual analogue scale, and functional disability using the shoulder pain and disability index (SPADI) was done by a blinded assessor. Results: Statistically significant difference was seen within both the groups for all the outcomes. In terms of increasing abduction ROM as well as reducing fear of movement, pain, and functional disability, the GMI group was significantly better than control group. However, both groups were equally effective for improving flexion and external rotation ROM. Conclusions: Addition of GMI to the conventional physiotherapy proved to be superior to conventional physiotherapy alone in terms of reducing pain, kinesiophobia, and improving shoulder function for stage I and II of FS.
This paper studies the static stability of an axially graded column with the power-law gradient varying along the axial direction. For a nonhomogeneous column with one end linked to a rotational spring and loaded by a compressive force, respectively, an Euler problem is analyzed by solving a boundary value problem of an ordinary differential equation with varying coefficients. Buckling loads through the characteristic equation with the aid of the Bessel functions are exactly given. An alternative way to approximately determine buckling loads through the integral equation method is also presented. By comparing approximate buckling loads with the exact ones, the approximate solution is simple in form and enough accurate for varying power-law gradients. The influences of the gradient index and the rotational spring stiffness on the critical forces are elucidated. The critical force and mode shapes at buckling are presented in graph. The critical force given here may be used as a benchmark to check the accuracy and effectiveness of numerical solutions. The approximate solution provides a feasible approach to calculating the buckling loads and to assessing the loss of stability of columns in engineering.
Permanent structure of photoinduced singlemode waveguide in optical fluoride glasses was demonstrated using the self-channeled plasma filament excited by a femtosecond (110 fs) Ti:sapphire laser ($λ_p$ = 800 nm). The photoinduced refractive index modification in ZBLAN glasses reached a length of approximately 10 - 15 mm from the input surface of the optical glass with the diameters ranging from 5 to 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at input intensities more than l.0 ${\times}$$10^{12}$ W/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The graded refractive index profiles were fabricated to be a symmetric form from the center of an optical fluoride glass and a maximum value of refractive index change (ㅿn) was measured to be l.3${\times}$$10^{-2}$. The beam profile of the output beam transmitted through the modified region showed that the photoinduced refractive index modification produced a permanent structure of singlemode waveguide.
The fabrication of internal diffraction gratings with photoinduced refractive index modification in transparent materials was demonstrated using low-density plasma formation excited by a femtosecond (130 fs) Ti: sapphire laser (${\lambda}_p$=800 nm). The refractive index modifications with diameters ranging from $1{\mu}m$ to $3{\mu}m$ were photoinduced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than $2.0{\times}10^{13}W/cm^2$. The graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred.

Optical filters with graded index profiles are designed by applying the fourier transform to a riccati equation which governs the reflection and transmission characteristics of inhomogeneous refractive index distributions. The inhomogeneous refractive index profile of an optical filter with specified target spectrum is obtained through iterations. The spectra response of the inhomogeneous refractive index layers are analyzed by using runge-dutta numerical method to solve the differential euations of the amplitude and the phase of reflection coefficient derived from the riccati equation and the results are in good agreement with the resutls obtained by using matrix method.

Purpose: This study was carried out to develop a classification index and grade levels to rate agricultural heaters for energy efficiency classification. Methods: The classification index was developed mainly by taking simplicity of calculation and easy access to relevant data into consideration. The grade levels were developed on the basis of a 5-grade classification system in which graded heaters are to be normally distributed over the grades. The value of each grade level were determined in terms of the classification index values calculated using the published performance data of agricultural heaters tested at the FACT in Korea over the past 12 years. Results: The thermal efficiency of agricultural heaters based on the enthalpy method was proposed as a reasonable classification index. The grade levels were proposed in equation form for three types of agricultural heaters: fossil fuel heaters, wood pellet heaters and wood pellet boilers. A reasonable energy efficiency classification of agricultural heaters could be performed using the proposed classification index and grade levels. Conclusions: It is expected that energy saving programs will be extended to agricultural machines in the near future. The classification index and grade levels to rate agricultural heaters for energy efficiency classification were developed and proposed for such near future to come.
To peruse the free vibration of curved functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) nanosize beam in thermal environment, nonlocal elasticity theory is applied for modeling the nano scale effect. The governing equations are obtained via the energy method. Analytically Navier solution is employed to solve the governing equations for simply supported boundary conditions. Solving these equations enables us to estimate the natural frequency for curved FGP nanobeam under the effect of a uniform temperature change and external electric voltage. The results determined are verified by comparing the results by available ones in literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality, uniform temperature changes, external electric voltage, gradient index, opening angle and aspect ratio of curved FGP nanobeam on the natural frequency are successfully discussed. The results revealed that the natural frequency of curved FGP nanobeam is significantly influenced by these effects.
Bending, buckling and free vibration responses of functionally graded (FG) higher-order beams resting on two parameter (Winkler-Pasternak) elastic foundation are studied using a new inverse hyperbolic beam theory. The material properties of the beam are graded along the thickness direction according to the power-law distribution. In the present theory, the axial displacement accounts for an inverse hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the beams. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations of motion. Navier type analytical solutions are obtained for the bending, bucking and vibration problems. Numerical results are obtained to investigate the effects of power-law index, length-to-thickness ratio and foundation parameter on the displacements, stresses, critical buckling loads and frequencies. Numerical results by using parabolic beam theory of Reddy and first-order beam theory of Timoshenko are specially generated for comparison of present results and found in excellent agreement with each other.
Thermal buckling of functionally graded sandwich cylindrical shells is presented in this study. Material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of FGM layers are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a sigmoid function and simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Equilibrium and stability equations of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells with simply supported boundary conditions are derived according to the Donnell theory. The influences of cylindrical shell geometry and the gradient index on the critical buckling temperature of several kinds of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells are investigated. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and nonlinear distribution across the thickness direction. An exact simple form of nonlinear temperature rise through its thickness taking into account the thermal conductivity and the inhomogeneity parameter is presented.
