  • Background: Since 2002, from October till December of each year, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health conducts a mammogram based breast cancer screening campaign in the whole country for women over 40 years of age. These mammograms are performed free of charge in governmental hospitals or for reduced fees in private hospitals. The aim of this study is to analyze the direct impact of this campaign on cancer detection and subsequent treatment. Materials and Methods: Radiologic records of women screened with a mammogram during the campaign period from October till December 2012 at Saint Joseph Hospital, Baouchrieh, Beirut, were reviewed. Results of mammograms were reported using the ACR score. Women with ACR score ${\geq}4$ were tracked and investigated. Results: 900 screening mammograms were performed; median age was 55.2 years (range:31-81 years). Some 826 (91.8%) had an ACR score of ${\leq}2$; 66 (7.3%) an ACR =3 and only 8 (0.89%) an ACR=4. Thus, less than 1% (8/900) of all screened women were considered at high risk and needed a close follow-up. Among these 8 women, 4 underwent surgery for an early breast cancer, one had synchronous metastatic breast cancer and two were lost to follow-up. Conclusions: To coclude, Among 900-screened women for BC, less than 1 % (8 out of 900) were at high risk of hiding a BC (ACR=4), half of them benefited from early therapy (4 women out of 900) and one was a false positive. Larger studies on national level should be accomplished to have a complete data on breast cancer screening in Lebanon. The results of these studies can affect the Lebanese health policy regarding BC.

  • Research collaboration between industry and universities is high on many policy agenda's nowadays, especially with regard to science-based technological innovation. Nonetheless, there have been few attempts at examining large-scale systematic and quantitative data on the nature and extent of university-industry collaborations. The objective of this paper is to explore the patterns and trends of research collaborations between universities and companies for scientific knowledge production in the seven science-based technologies. This paper uses co-authored articles published in major scientific journals in the world as an indicator of collaborative scientific research between universities, companies and governmental research institutes. The tens of thousands of co-authorship papers in the northeast region in the US over the years 2006 to 2010 were analyzed for collaboration patterns and their spatial characteristics. This paper finds that there were increases both in the proportions of multiple authored, particularly five or more, papers, and in the volume of international collaborations. By examining a type of collaborations between different institutions, research collaboration between universities and companies in this region is relatively high share at national level. This suggests that the national or even international scale seems more appropriate for innovation policies.

  • The Family Planning Program has teen intensively implemented in Korea by the national policy since 1962. However, the desired effective results were not fully obtained by many reasons such as the shortage of qualified workers, lack of eligible women's cooperation and understanding of the importance of family planning etc., The field family planning workers is classified into two categories along the governmental personnel order; the senior field worker and the assistant field worker. The former is qualified licensed nurse and the latter same as the former of a certified nurses-aid. These family planning worker's roles are somewhat in change not only in field education, distribution of contraceptions, administrating mother's class of assistant field workers but also responsible for the senior field workers such as recording, reporting and keeping statistics. Therefor, the desired success of family planning programming in Korea depends on family planning worker's professional abilities and activities in the field. In aiming to study on professional knowledge of the above two kinds of family planning workers, the following results were obtained through a field survey with question airs done as of October, 1970 in Kyonggi-Do. 1. Working term of the family planning workers in average were less than two years. The younger the assistant Field workers were, the earlier they left job. 2. The assistant field workers selected their job in order to the superficial rather than implementing job itself. 3. Most of the workers either in the health center or in the Up-Myun had a better understanding concerning with their job ; contraceptive methods, maintenance of equipment and drug keeping, and other administrative procedures, etc., 4. They had relatively better understanding and sufficient knowledge about contraception itself and application of it's methods and side effects in detail too, but less knowledges for the care after. 5. It was hard to Find out any differences in administrative knowledge and demographic understanding. 5. It is fully agreed upon that the longer the worker have experienced with the program, the more skilful she applied. 7. The worker who had training whether pre-service or insertive are working more effectively than the untrained. 8. The fundamental demographic knowledge is recommended to obtain for the workers in Kyonggi-Do.

  • Establishing housing supply strategies in Korean housing market is a crucial issue due to contradictory but concurrent two problems in market; one is the unstable working-class residential and the other is the high vacancy rate by the low-level of sales rate. Although government has been continuously implementing various supply policies in an attempt to evenly distribute houses as well as to keep supply and demand in balance, it is difficult to satisfy all of stakeholders, such as housing consumers, housing owners and housing suppliers. This paper, therefore, applies a system dynamics methodology and offers a dynamic and integrated model encompassing for-profit behaviors of each market participants. The proposed model simulates the future trends of house prices, the balances between supply and demand, construction companies earnings and vacancy rate when applying various housing supply scenarios. From the simulation result, recent governmental small-size rental housing supplies in bulks should utilize private construction companies to stabilize housing distribution rate and private supply system as well as the supply and demand are well balanced.

  • Recently, the use an electric apparatus has brought into concerns about health risks from exposure to electromagnetic fields. During the last 2 decades, a number of epidemiological studies have explored the association between childhood leukaemia and residential exposure to power-frequency electromagnetic fields. Several studies have suggested that there is a small excess leukaemia risk with magnetic field exposure above 2 mG. A number of governmental and international organizations have developed exposure gudelines. The most rigid regulation with exposure levels for the elementary school and hospital has been enacted by Switzerland. Although there is no convincing supportive laboratory evidence, and the absence of a plausible biological mechanism of disease causation limits, governments are increasingly called on to adopt precautionary approaches to regulating electromagnetic field exposures. The government would need to establish the policy for electromagnetic fields and continually to be concerned about possible health risks from exposure to electromagnetic fields.

  • With the long-term use of fossil fuel, the whole world is suffering from serious abnormal changes in weather caused by global warming. For this reason, many countries are reducing greenhouse gas emissions out of obligation and the allowable emissions are assigned to each country. Korea is also putting much effort into reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent against BAU(Business As Usual) by 2020, and is pushing ahead with several projects such as 'Million Green Home' and 'Hatsal Gaduk Home' to expand the use of new renewable energy in house as part of its policy. This study was designed to come up with improvements and help to expand photovoltaic facilities, by investigating and analyzing the current state of photovoltaic facilities in the country and problems in installing them through an in-site reconnaissance and a survey in Jecheon area. As the result, it was found that residents in the area were inadequate to operate and install photovoltaic facilities, lacked awareness of them and felt burdened economically by managing and installing them, although they had a high awareness of solar energy and photovoltaic facilities are constantly increasing with governmental support. In conclusion, it is considered that as improvements, operational effects should be increased through development of techniques, factors to reduce the effects in operating them due to insufficient management and installation should be removed and awareness of residents need to be improved through long-term plans, political support and education of the government.
