Downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) occurred on the cotyledon of gourd (Lagenaria leucantha cv. Sambokkkul) and scion of watermelon (cv. FR couple) in commercial nursery around Jinju city, Gyeongnam province in Korea in 2005 and 2006. The disease symptoms usually started with water-soaking lesions on cotyledon and then the infected leaves became withered and eventually died. The sporangia of the pathogen were one-celled, ovoid to ellipsoid in shape, pale grayish in color, and $20{\sim}32{\times}14{\sim}18{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiophores were errect, branched, and $140{\sim}380{\times}4{\sim}8{\mu}m$ in size. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to artificial inoculations. Although the virulence of the causal fungus on the host plants was not strong, it produced typical symptoms. The causal organism was identified as Pseudoperonospora cubensis (Berkeley & Curtis) based on the mycological characteristics of the fungus and pathogenicity. This is the first report on downy mildew of watermelon caused by P. cubensis in Korea.
AP2/EREBP gene family consists of transcription factor genes with a conserved AP2 DNA-binding domain and is involved in various biological processes. AP2/EREBP gene families were identified through genome-wide searches in five Cucurbitaceae species including cucumber, wild cucumber, melon, watermelon, and bitter gourd, which consisted of more than 100 genes in each of the five species. The gene families were further divided into five groups including four subfamilies (ERF, DREB, AP2 and RAV) and a soloist group. Among the subfamilies, DREB subfamily which is known to be related to abiotic stress response was more analyzed and a total of 25 genes were identified as Cucurbitaceae homologues of Arabidopsis CBF/DREB1 genes which are important for abiotic stress-response and tolerance. In silico expression profiling using RNA-Seq data revealed diverse expression patterns of cucumber AP2/EREBP genes. AP2/EREBP gene families identified in this study will be valuable for understanding the stress response mechanism as well as facilitating molecular breeding in Cucurbitaceae crops.
Background and objective: Urbanization caused a reduction in urban green space and a lack of community spaces. An attempt to solve these problems, urban gardens, have become popular and are currently being implemented in various downtown areas. However, urban gardens have some inadequate aspects from a visual or landscape perspective. The goal of this study was to examine the possibility of an aesthetic and productive garden space by introducing cultivation methods through the planting system design process. Methods: The design process using plants was classified and presented to suggest the importance of the landscape and aesthetic value. An urban garden space was designed according to the perspective of 'production scenery' and 'participation aesthetics'. According to the characteristics of the plant, urban gardens were divided into vertical type (corn, millet, sorghum), climbing type (kidney bean, cucumber, bitter gourd), and runner type (melon, watermelon, peanut). After classifying plants according to the shape of the root, the structure supporting climbing was installed and the crops were cultivated in an upright form with a tunnel. Results: In the designed cultivation, each crop cooperates, without invading each other's space. Compared with the conventional cultivation, there was little difference in production, and management was made more convenient since weed outbreaks were effectively suppressed while runner type crops cover over the land's surface. Since the positions of each crop are clearly distinguished, the aesthetic value is improved by offering a sense of rhythm with a balanced design. Conclusion: The results suggest that the cultivation methods through the plant system design process have aesthetic as well as productive value, and the design using plants, an infinite living resource, could lead to an expansion of the design field. Moreover, it would enable a sustainable symbiosis between industry and environment. There is potential for the design industry to make significant progress through collaboration with agriculture, horticulture, and landscape architecture.
This study investigated the characteristics for rice husk pulverization and surface modification of biomass byproducts composed of rice husk, corn extract gourd, wheat bran, and soybean curd. The size of particles of rice husk was at 6.44 ㎛ and represented the most affordable material for preparing the bio-degradable film among the tested byproducts. The silane treatment and adding 2% of ESO (Epoxidized soybean oil) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane solution mixed in a 1:1 ratio were best to the surface modification and SEM-based particle shape. Above the results, adding 2% of mixed solution after silane treatment of rice husks processed through an air classifying mill (ACM) allows for its use as a raw material of bio-degradable plastic film.

Fusarium wilt disease caused by Fusarium species is a major problem affecting cultivated cucurbit plants worldwide. Fusarium species are well-known soil-borne pathogenic fungi that cause Fusarium wilt disease in several cucurbit plants. In this study, we aimed to identify and classify pathogenic Fusarium species from cultivated Korean cucurbit plants, specifically watermelon and cucumber. Thirty-six Fusarium isolates from different regions of Korea were obtained from the National Institute of Horticulture and Herbal Science Germplasm collection. Each isolate was morphologically and molecularly identified using an internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA, elongation factor-1α, and the beta-tubulin gene marker sequence. Fusarium species that infect the cucurbit plant family could be divided into three groups: Fusarium oxysporum (F. oxysporum), Fusarium solani (F. solani), and Fusarium equiseti (F. equieti). Among the 36 isolates examined, six were non-pathogenic (F. equiseti: 15-127, F. oxysporum: 14-129, 17-557, 17-559, 18-369, F. solani: 12-155), whereas 30 isolates were pathogenic. Five of the F. solani isolates (11-117, 14-130, 17-554, 17-555, 17-556) were found to be highly pathogenic to both watermelon and cucumber plants, posing a great threat to cucurbit production in Korea. The identification of several isolates of F. equiseti and F. oxysporum, which are both highly pathogenic to bottle gourd, may indicate waning resistance to Fusarium species infection.

The objectives of this study were to select the seeds of Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae genotypes in terms of superior with bioactive compounds content and to inform sophisticated data for developing the high value-added products. We evaluated to aspects of the antioxidant activity, polyphenol content, and flavonoid contents in seeds from two vegetable family. We used in the Cucurbitaceae(watermelon, squash, bitter gourd, and sponge gourd) and Solanaceae(hot pepper, sweet pepper, and egg plant) the total 408 genotypes. In Cucurbitaceae, polyphenol content of watermelon and squash genotypes were ranged 19.9-343.8 and $6.1-81.2mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$, respectively. The polyphenol content of watermelon genotypes was 12% among all genotypes over $160mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$. The mean of flavonoid content in watermelon and squash genotypes represented 80 and $41.3mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$, respectively. In Solanaceae, flavonoid content of hot pepper genotypes was ranged $64.4-472.5mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$, with an average of $165.0mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}$. The 23 hot pepper genotypes were classified over 90% antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of sweet pepper was ranged 35.9-90.3%, and 23% of all genotypes represented 82% antioxidant activity. The polyphenol and flavonoid content of egg plant was ranged $38.1-642.0mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$ and $14.2-1217.0mg{\cdot}100g^{-1}\;DW$, respectively. In addition, we selected that 8 egg plant with the superior genotypes for antioxidant activity, polyphenol, and flavonoid content. Results revealed that there was significant variation of antioxidant activity and bioactive compounds contents in both vegetable famaily. In addition, we suggested that selected genotypes seeds with high contain bioactive compounds will be more efficiency to develop natural value-added products.

This study was carried out to test the antimicrobial activities of nano metal hybrid materials produced by plasma technologies (radio frequency-thermal plasma system and direct current sputtering system) against microbes isolated from cucurbit (watermelon, pumpkin, and gourd) seeds. Eight different nano metal hybrid materials and four carriers were tested against five different fungal and ten different bacterial isolates in vitro. Among the tested nano metal hybrid material, Brass/CaCO3 (1,000 ppm) exhibited 100% antimicrobial effect against all the five tested fungi. However, nano metal hybrid material Brass/CaCO3 (1,000 ppm) inhibited only four bacterial isolates, Weissella sp., Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Burkholderia sp., and Enterococcus sp. at 100% level, and did not inhibited other six bacterial isolates. Nano metal hybrid material graphite-nickel (G-Ni) showed 100% inhibition rate against Rhizopus stolonifer and 52.94-71.76% inhibition rate against four different fungal isolates. Nano metal hybrid material G-Ni did not show any inhibition effects against tested ten bacterial isolates. In summary, among the tested eight different nano metal hybrid materials and four carriers, Brass/CaCO3 showed inhibition effects against five fungal isolates and four bacterial isolates, and G-Ni showed variable inhibition effects (52.94-100%) against five fungal isolates and did not show any inhibition effects against all the bacterial isolates.
This study aimed to examine a suppression effect of salinity on extension rate of stem elongation of cucumber seedlings (Cucumis sativus L.) grafted with roots of figleaf gourd plant. The effects of application methods, timings, and concentrations of two salt types, sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$), were compared to untreated control plants. In result, an obvious suppression effect on the excessive elongation of stem was obtained by both sub-irrigated and medium-mixed NaCl salt. An improvement in quality of transplants was also obtained by the sub-irrigated NaCl salt. Foliar-applied NaCl caused visible leaf injury when the concentration was higher than 40 mM; but, with no effect on suppressing the stem elongation. When the NaCl was applied at 7 days after grafting, a higher concentration of NaCl was demanded for suppressing the stem elongation compared to an application at the day of grafting. No effect of the NaCl salt on the fresh weights of 36-day grown plants was observed; but, there was a negative effect on the number of female flowers at a high temperature season. Overall, the NaCl salt was more effective on slowing down the stem elongation and had the lower incidence of leaf injury than the $CaCl_2$ salt.
The aim of this study was to examine the optimum wattage and installation height using nano-carbon fiber infrared heating lamp (NCFIHL) for heating energy saving and plug seedling production in plug seedling production greenhouse in winter season. NCFIHL of 700 and 900 W was installed over the bed ($1.2{\times}2.4m$) as 0.7, 1.0, and 1.3 m height, respectively, for the production of grafted watermelon seedling in venlo-type glasshouse. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Manst.) 'Jijonggul' and gourd (Lagenaria leucantha Rusby.) 'Sunbongjang' were used as scions and rootstocks, respectively. The scions and rootstocks were grafted by single cotyledon ordinary splice grafting. Light intensity of NCFIHL was below the $1{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ in all treatment. Spectral distributions of NCFIHL presented mostly infrared area. When outside air temperature was below $10^{\circ}C$, 700 and 900 W NCFIHL installed with 0.7 m height treatment and 900 W NCFIHL installed with 1.0 m height treatment maintained the setting air temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) at night. In the result of taking thermal imaging, the grafted watermelons were getting warm fast in 900 W NCFIHL installed with 0.7 m height treatment at night. Compactness of the grafted watermelons was the greatest in 700 W NCFIHL installed with 1.3 m height treatment. The results indicate that NCFIHL installed above 1.0 m height using 700 W was suitable for production of plug seedling.
