  • This research aims to verify the generation transfer of proper manners from mothers to adolescent children and the relationship between adolescents' proper manners and strengths of family life. The data from 826 questionnaires (413 pairs of adolescents and mothers) were used for the final analysis. The findings of the study are summarized as follows: First, as for the extent of the implementation of manners of mothers and adolescent children both parties generally abided by good manners, but a significant difference emerged in the patterns. Second, both mothers and adolescent children were influenced by psychological determinants of self-esteem, values of humanism, emotional intimacy between mother and child, and social support for the implementation of good manners. On the other hand, adolescent children were affected the most by the emotional intimacy with mothers. Third, children generally showed significant differences in their implementation of manners according to the manners their mothers. Fourth, there were significant differences in the strengths of family life for adolescent children depending on their implementation of manners. Fifth, when comparing the relative contribution of the mothers' psychological determinants on strengths of family life and adolescent children's psychological determinants on the implementation of manners, strengths of family life gained more credibility as more variables were added.

  • The analysis and design of complex structures like sandwich-panel elements are difficult; the use of finite element method for the analysis is complicated and time consuming when non-linear effects are considered. On the other hand, artificial neural network (ANN) models can capture the non-linear effects and its application requires lesser computational demand. Two ANN models were trained, tested and validated to compute the force for a given displacement of a sandwich-type roof element; 2555 force and element deformation pairs were used for training the ANN models. For the models trained without considering the damping effect, there were two values in the input layer: maximum displacement and current displacement, and for the model considering damping, displacement from the previous step was used as an additional input. Totally, 400 ANN models were trained. Results show that there is a good agreement between the experimental and simulated data, and the models showed a good performance with a mean square error value of 4548.85. Both the ANN models could simulate the inelastic behaviour, loss of rigidity, and evolution of permanent displacements. The models could also interpolate and extrapolate, which enables them to be used as an analysis and design tool for such complex elements.

  • A method for the simultaneous determination of copper and cobalt by spectrophotometry has been described. The procedure involves the co-extraction of Cu(Ⅱ) and Co(Ⅱ) from 0.3M HCl into methyl isobutyl ketone as the ion-pairs formed between their thiocyanate complexes and high molecular alkylamines such as Amberlite LA1, Alamine 336, and Aliquat 336. The extract shows the color development to have the maximum absorbances at two different wavelengths i.e., 480 nm for copper and 625 nm for cobalt. Since the spectra of the ion-pairs overlap each other, two simultaneous equations are used to obtain the concentrations from absorbances. Even small amount of Fe(Ⅲ) and Ni(Ⅱ) interferes with the determination of copper. The results of the analysis of samples are in good agreement with the results determined by separate methods within RSD 5.9%.

  • Survivability is a necessary property of network system in disturbed environment. Recovery ability is a key actor of survivability. This paper concludes network survivability into a novel composite metric, i.e. Network Recovery Degree (NRD). In order to measure this metric in quantity, a concept of Source-Destination Pair (SD Pair), is created to abstract end-to-end activity based on end nodes in network, and the quality of SD Pair is also used to describe network performance, such as connectivity, quality of service, link degree, and so on. After that, a Survivability Test method in large scale Network based on SD pairs, called STNSD, is provided. How to select SD Pairs effectively in large scale network is also provided. We set up simulation environment to validate the test method in a severe destroy scenario and evaluate the method scalability in different large scale network scenarios. Experiment and analysis shows that the metric NRD correctly reflects the effort of different survivability strategy, and the proposed test method STNSD has good scalability and can be used to test and evaluate quantitative survivability in large scale network.

  • The process of embryogenesis and larval development of the asteroid sea star Asterias amurensis $(U{\ddot{u}}tken)$ was observed, with special attention paid to morphological change and larval duration. In reproductive season, mature sea stars were collected under floating net cages, located in Tongyeong, southern Korea. The mature eggs are $138\;{\mu}m$ in average diameter, semi-translucent and orange in color, sperms in good condition appear light cream to white-gray in color. Embryos develop through the holoblastic equal cleavage stage and a wrinkled blastula stage that lasts about 9 hours after fertilization. Gastrulae bearing an expanded archenteron hatch from the fertilization envelope 22 hours after fertilization. At the end of gastrulation, rudiments of the left and right coelom are formed. By day 2, larvae possess complete alimentary canal and begin to feed. At this stage, the larva is called early bipinnaria. In 6-day-old larvae, the pre- and post- oral ciliated bands form complete circuits and the bipinnarial processes start to develop. By day 12, the lateral and anterior projection of the larval wall processes along the ciliated bands begins to thicken and curl, and the ciliated bands become more prominent. By day 32, early brachiolaria are presented with three pairs of brachiolar arms. Advanced brachiolaria with a well-developed brachiolar complex (three pairs of brachia and central adhesive disc) occur 6 weeks after fertilization. In the field, spawning of the sea star was observed in April to May, settlement form larvae and just settlements seem to occur from June to July, and early juveniles occur from August to September. Although we had not described the end of brachiolaria stage, it can be tentatively estimated that the duration of the pelagic stage of A. amurensis is 40 to 50 days.

  • Iterative reconstruction methods have played a prominent role in emission computed tomography due to their remarkable advantages over the conventional filtered backprojection method. However, since iterative reconstructions typically are comprised of repeatedly projecting and backprojecting the data, the computational load required for reconstructing an image depends highly on the performance of the projector-backprojector pair used in the algorithm. In this work we compare quantitative performance of representative methods for implementing projector-backprojector pairs. To reduce the overall cost for the projection-backprojection operations for each method, we investigate how previously computed results can be reused so that the number of redundant calculations can be minimized. Our experimental results demonstrate that the ray tracing method not only outperforms other methods in computation time, but also provides improved reconstructions with good accuracy.

  • A regenerative evaporative cooler has been fabricated and tested for the evaluation of cooling performance. The regenerative evaporative cooler is a kind of indirect evaporative cooler comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels. The air flowing through the dry channels is cooled without any change in the humidity and at the outlet of the dry channel a part of air is redirected to the wet channel where the evaporative cooling takes place. The regenerative evaporative cooler fabricated in this study consists of the multiple pairs of finned channels in counterflow arrangement. The fins and heat transfer plates were made of aluminum and brazed for good thermal connection. Thin porous layer coating was applied to the internal surface of the wet channel to improve surface wettability. The regenerative evaporative cooler was placed in a climate chamber and tested at various operation condition. The cooling performance is found greatly influenced by the evaporation water flow rate. To improve the cooling performance, the evaporation water flow rate needs to be minimized as far as the even distribution of the evaporation water is secured. At the inlet condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH, the outlet temperature was measured at $22^{\circ}C$ which is well below the inlet wet-bulb temperature of $23.7^{\circ}C$.

  • PURPOSE. Accurate color matching of maxillofacial prostheses to skin is important for esthetics. A computerized color matching system specific to human skin has recently been developed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy in color and translucency matching of the computerized color matching system across different skin colors. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The silicone was colored to simulate 28 different skin colors (n=5) to serve as "target skin colors". Using a spectrocolorometer (e-skin), color codes were determined for "replicate skin color" fabrication. CIELAB Delta-E between target skin color-replicate skin color pairs and translucency parameter were calculated. CIELAB Delta-E values were compared with one-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple-comparison. The agreement between $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ and translucency parameter of target skin colors and replicate skin color were calculated by a two-way mixed average measures intraclass correlation coefficient. Translucency parameter of target skin color- replicate skin color pairs were compared with Paired t-test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The mean CIELAB Delta-E value was 3.83 and significant differences were found among colors. The intraclass correlation coefficient showed excellent reliability for $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ and good reliability for translucency parameter (P<.001). The mean translucency parameter of replicate skin colors was significantly higher than that of translucency parameter. CONCLUSION. The computerized color matching system specific to human skin was found to be reliable in terms of color and translucency between target skin colors and replicate skin color.

  • The UTP cable has been widely used, recently it is being developed for use in the UHF frequency band. One important characteristic of the UTP cable is NEXT. This research is to develop a pitch selection technique for an UTP cable which leads to a satisfactory NEXT. The transmission line model involving mutual inductances and capacitances between line pairs is used, and the simulation was carried out for frequencies from 1 MHz to 600 MHz. With respect to the worst margin of the NEXT for a Cat. 6 cable the simulation and measurement results show a good agreement.

  • Efficient quantization methods of the line spectrum pairs (LSP) which have good performances, low complexity and memory are proposed. The adaptive quantization range method utilizing the ordering property of LSP parameters is used in a scalar quantizer and a vector-scalar hybrid quantizer. As the maximum quantization range of each LSP parameter is varied adaptively on the quantized value of the previous order's LSP parameter, efficient quantization methods can be obtained. The proposed scalar quantization algorithm needs 31 bits/frame, which is 3 bits less per frame than in the conventional scalar quantization method with interframe prediction to maintain the transparent quality of speech. The improved vector-scalar quantizer achieves an average spectral distortion of 1 dB using 26 bits/frame. The performances of proposed quantization methods are also evaluated in the transmission errors.
