  • Silicon dioxide films were prepared by anodizing silicon wafers in an ethylene $glycol+HNO_3(0.04{\;}N)$ at 20 to $70^{\circ}C$. The voltage between silicon anode and platinum cathode was measured during this process. Under the constant current electrolysis, the voltage increased with oxide film growth. The transition time at which the voltage reached the predetermined value depended on the temperature of the electrolyte. After the time of electrolysis reached the transition time, the anodization was changed the constant voltage mode. The depth profile of oxide film/Si substrate was confirmed by XPS analysis to study the influence of the electrolyte temperature on the anodization. Usually, the oxide-silicon peaks disappear in the silicon substrate, however, this peak was not small at $45^{\circ}C$ in this region.

  • Superporous Hydrogels (SPHs) have been extensively investigated for various biomedical applications due to their fast swelling and superabsorbent properties. In this study, glycol chitosan that is one of most abundant natural polymers was used as a cross-linking agent instead of bisacrylamide (BIS), which is a broadly used crosslinking agent for preparation of SPHs. Glycol chitosan was modified to have reactive vinyl groups by chemical conjugation with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The vinyl group-containing glycol chitosan (GC-GMA) was characterized by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR measurements. SPHs have been prepared in various synthetic conditions to establish the optimum synthetic process for making superporous structure, where the inner pores are interconnected to each other to form a open channel structure. Various SPHs with different GC-GMA contents have been successfully prepared and have been observed to show faster swelling properties than other conventional SPHs. From the study on the swelling behavior of SPHs, the GC-GMA content is considered to be an important factor for controlling their swelling properties.

  • Polyurethane specimens were mainly composed of polyol, MDI, silicone surfactant, and water. The effects of ethylene glycol on the cell size, forming magnification, cream time, gel time, take free time, final free rising height, and reactive temperature were investigated. The cyclopentane was used for PU foam as a physical blowing agent. The components were hand-mixed at about 5000 rpm within 4 seconds at room temperature. The mixtures with various ethylene glycol contents were foamed in the wood mold. When the index of isocyanate was fixed, as the amount of ethylene glycol increased, cell size and thermal conductivity were decreased by about 5.1% and 14%, respectively.

  • Polyelectrolyte complex films were prepared with two compounds, chitosan and poly(ethylene glycol)-monosuccinate, using a casting in order to synthesize a polyelectrolyte complex film with various mole ratios of chitosan and poly(ethylene glycol)-monosuccinate. The solution properties of isolated PEC were investigated for the effects of FTIR, pH value, Brookfield viscosity and cell viability assay using MTT staining. The PEC films were evaluated for mechanical properties by typical stress-strain curve, far thermal properties by DSC and TGA and for surface morphology Properties by SEM. Furthermore, the surface resistance, moisture regain and water content of the films were characterized. The solution properties were affected by several factors including the chitosan content in the PEC, the mixing ratio of PEG and chitosan, and pH. Several PEC in acidic conditions exhibited film formation under appropriate conditions of mixing ratio and chitosan concentration in the mixing process. These PEC films were found to have sufficiently flexible and stable properties due to their hydrophilic structure, which was farmed by the oppositely charged interaction between PEG-MS and chitosan matrix. The results showed the potential applicability of chitosan and poly(ethylene glycol)-monosuccinate films as a biocompatible polymer.

  • The influence of a liquid medium duringa wet-milling process in the grinding and oxidation of silicon powder was investigated. Distilled water, dehydrated ethanol and diethylene glycol were used as the liquid media. The applied grinding times were 0.5, 3, and 12 h. Ground silicon powder samples were characterized by means of aparticle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy(SEM), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy and by a chemical composition analysis. From the results of the characterization process, we found that diethylene glycol is the most efficient liquid medium when silicon powder is ground using a wet-milling process. The FT-IR results show that the Si-O band intensity in an unground silicon powder is quite strongbecause oxygen becomes incorporated with silicon to form $SiO_2$ in air. By applying deionized water as a liquid medium for the grinding of silicon, the $SiO_2$ content increased from 4.12% to 31.7%. However, in the cases of dehydrated ethanol and diethylene glycol, it was found that the $SiO_2$ contents after grinding only changed insignificantly, from 4.12% to 5.91% and 5.28%, respectively.

  • In order to purify diethylene glycol as main impurity included in p-dioxanone, SLE (solid-liquid equilibria) and mixture density on two components system of p-dioxanone and diethylene glycol were measured and a layered melt crystallization with seed has been applied. The SLE of p-dioxanone and diethylene glycol were a simple eutectic system and the temperature and PDX concentration at eutectic point were 0.08 and 246 K, respectively. Densities of their binary mixtures were well fitted by the best correlation equation, ${\rho}_l=0.405+1.361x+0.002T-0.004xT$. In the melt crystallization, the growth rate (G) was proportional to the 1.5th power of the subcooling degree. The effective distribution coefficient ($K_{eff}$) as the degree of impurity removal was observed to increase with increasing the growth rate and initial p-dioxanone concentration. And also, $K_{eff}$ was correlated with Z function using Wintermantel's model such as $K_{eef}=-0.0604+6.392{\times}Z$. Finally, PDX purity through the optimization of this process can be obtained over 99%.

  • Duplex microstructure of zirconia and alumina has been achieved via an organic-inorganic solution technique. Zirconium 2,4-pentanedionate, aluminum nitrate and polyethylene glycol were dissolved in ethyl alcohol without any precipitation. The organicinorganic precursor gels were turned to porous powders having volume expansion through explosive, exothermic reaction during drying process. The volume expansion was caused by abrupt decomposition of the organic groups in the gels during the vigorous exothermic reaction. The volume expanded, porous powders were crystallized and densified at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. At the optimum amount of the PEG polymer, the metal cations were well dispersed in the solution and a homogeneous polymeric network was formed. The polymer content also affected on the specific surface area of the synthesized powder and the grain size of the sintered composite.

  • This study deals with the effectiveness and its reaction of stearic acid, ethyl silicate and ethylene glycol as grinding aids in grinding of Hwasun flint clay by dry ball milling process. Results are follows ; 1) It was effective that stearic acid and ethyl silicate act as the grinding aids in grinding of Hwasun flint clay. Also, it was proven that addition of stearic acid and ethyl silicate was the most effective in 1.0 and 0.75wt%, respectively. 2) The addition of ethylene glycol below 0.5wt% showed better result than none, but when added more than 0.5wt% it behaved as the inhibitor of grinding process. 3) It was investigated that grinding aids increased the ability of the particle dispression by reducing the strong chhesive forces which is caused by extensive surface tension of water.

  • It has been reported that the LCD panel market in the FPD industry is become growing and its panel size and production capacity are increasing, and its manufacturing technique is improved every year. FPD manufacturing process requires high cleanliness in its overall process. Especially, FPD cleaning process which accounts for 30~40% of total manufacturing process is very important in its technological and productivity aspects. It is difficult to remove residual liquid-crystal in the fine gap after liquid-crystal injection process in the cell. In this study, aqueous cleaning agents with excellent cleaning, rinsing, and penetrating abilities, but minimum ion content for LCD panel were formulated through mixing glycol ether-type and glycol dimethyl ether-type solvents and nonionic surfactants which are widely used as raw materials for alternative cleaning agents because of environmental regulation at home and abroad. And the formulated cleaning agents were applied to clean FPD liquid crystal after its injection in the cell. Physical properties, cleaning efficiencies, and rinsabilities of the formulated cleaning agents with different combination ratios of solvents, surfactants and additives were measured. As experimental results, the formulated cleaning agents showed higher wetting indices and cloud point than the traditional commercial cleaning agent. And it was found that cleaning efficiencies of the formulated cleaning agents were influenced by the structure of main solvents in them and the types of liquid crystal as soil for cleaning. The best cleaning agents among the formulated cleaning agents showed similar cleaning efficiencies and better rinsabilities compared to the conventional cleaning agent.

  • Carbon dioxide should be removed to increase the productivity of dimethyl ether(DME) from the DME manufacturing process. In this study, carbon dioxide can be removed using a physical absorbent through a solvent absorption method and membrane separation method. After performing the simulation for the carbon dioxide removal process, the energy consumption of the processes was compared. Methanol was used as a physical absorbent for the rectisol process, dimethyl ethers of polyethylene glycol for the Selexol process and N-methyl pyrrolidone for the Purisol process. By performing the simulation for each process, the energy consumption was compared. The Purisol process had the lowest energy consumption, followed in order by the Selexol process, Rectisol process and Membrane process. Therefore, the Purisol process was the most suitable method for the carbon dioxide process in the DME manufacturing process.
