  • In this work a new correlation has been made to predict the solar radiation for 16 different areas over Korea by estimating the regression coefficients taking into account cloud hours of bright sunshine. Particularly, the multiple linear regression model proposed shows reliable results for estimating the global radiation on a horizontal surface with monthly average deviation of -0.26 to +0.53% and each station annual average deviation of -1.61 to +1.7% from measured values.

  • A Precision Spectral Pyranometer (PSP) is mainly used as a reference to calibrate other pyranometers due to its high accuracy and sensitivity in response to the spectrum wavelength range of 0.285 ${\mu}$ to 2.8 ${\mu}$, while the sensitivity of photovoltaic-type Li-Cor pyranometer is limited within a certain spectral range from 0.4 ${\mu}$ to 1.1 ${\mu}$. In this study, two Eppley PSPs($PSP_1$ and $PSP_2$) were first compared to the calibrated Eppley PSPs from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), resulting in two linear correction factors based on the comparison between the logger output (V) from the test PSP and the solar radiation (W/m2) from the NREL PSP. The Li-Cor pyranometer used in this study was then corrected based on the comparison of measured solar radiation ($W/m^2$) from the corrected $PSP_1$ and the Li-Cor pyranometer. In addition, instrument scale corrections were also performed for the PSPs and the Li-Cor from the transmitter to the data logger. From the comparisons, a linear correction factor (1.0214) with R=0.9998 was developed for the scale correction between$PSP_1$ and $PSP_2$, while the Li-Cor pyranometer has a scale(1.0597) and offset (32.046) with R=0.9998 against$PSP_1$. As a result, it was identified that there were good agreements within ${\pm}$ 10 W/ $m^2$ between Eppley $PSP_1$ vs. $PSP_2$ solar radiation and within ${\pm}$ 20 W/$m^2$ between$PSP_1$ vs Li-Cor solar radiation after the empirical scale corrections developed in this study.

  • The photovoltaic module has the characteristic that the output power varies according to the amount of insolation. If partial shading occurs in an environment composed of an array, a number of local maximum power points (LMPPs) may be generated according to the shading state. Photovoltaic arrays require global maximum power point tracking due to variations in output characteristics caused by solar radiation and temperature. Conventional algorithms, such as P&O and Incond, do not follow the global maximum power point in a partial shaded solar array. In this study, we propose a technique to follow the global maximum power point by using the correlation of voltage, current, and power in solar arrays. The proposed control technique 2qw validated through simulation and experiments by constructing a 2-kW solar system.

  • Spectral solar irradiances were observed using a visible and UV Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer on the rooftop of the Science Building at Yonsei University, Seoul ($37.57^{\circ}N$, $126.98^{\circ}E$, 86 m) during one year period in 2006. 1-min measurements of global(total) and diffuse solar irradiances over the solar zenith angle (SZA) ranges from $20^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ were used to examine the effects of clouds and total optical depth (TOD) on enhancing four solar irradiance components (broadband 395-955 nm, UV channel 304.5 nm, visible channel 495.2 nm, and infrared channel 869.2 nm) together with the sky camera images for the assessment of cloud conditions at the time of each measurement. The obtained clear-sky irradiance measurements were used for empirical model of clear-sky irradiance with the cosine of the solar zenith angle (SZA) as an independent variable. These developed models produce continuous estimates of global and diffuse solar irradiances for clear sky. Then, the clear-sky irradiances are used to estimate the effects of clouds and TOD on the enhancement of surface solar irradiance as a difference between the measured and the estimated clear-sky values. It was found that the enhancements occur at TODs less than 1.0 (i.e. transmissivity greater than 37%) when solar disk was not obscured or obscured by optically thin clouds. Although the TOD is less than 1.0, the probability of the occurrence for the enhancements shows 50~65% depending on four different solar radiation components with the low UV irradiance. The cumulus types such as stratoculmus and altoculumus were found to produce localized enhancement of broadband global solar irradiance of up to 36.0% at TOD of 0.43 under overcast skies (cloud cover 90%) when direct solar beam was unobstructed through the broken clouds. However, those same type clouds were found to attenuate up to 80% of the incoming global solar irradiance at TOD of about 7.0. The maximum global UV enhancement was only 3.8% which is much lower than those of other three solar components because of the light scattering efficiency of cloud drops. It was shown that the most of the enhancements occurred under cloud cover from 40 to 90%. The broadband global enhancement greater than 20% occurred for SZAs ranging from 28 to $62^{\circ}$. The broadband diffuse irradiance has been increased up to 467.8% (TOD 0.34) by clouds. In the case of channel 869.0 nm, the maximum diffuse enhancement was 609.5%. Thus, it is required to measure irradiance for various cloud conditions in order to obtain climatological values, to trace the differences among cloud types, and to eventually estimate the influence on solar irradiance by cloud characteristics.

  • Global Solar Radiation (GSR) is the key element for performance estimation of any Solar Power Plant (SPP). Its forecasting may help in estimation of power production from a SPP well in advance, and may also render help in optimal use of this power. Seasonal Auto-Regressive Moving Average (SARMA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models are combined in order to develop a hybrid model (SARMA-ANN) conceiving the characteristics of both linear and non-linear prediction models. This developed model has been used for prediction of GSR at Gorakhpur, situated in the northern region of India. The proposed model is beneficial for the univariate forecasting. Along with this model, we have also used Auto-Regressive Moving Average (ARMA), SARMA, ANN based models for 1 - 6 day-ahead forecasting of GSR on hourly basis. It has been found that the proposed model presents least RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and produces best forecasting results among all the models considered in the present study. As an application, the comparison between the forecasted one and the energy produced by the grid connected PV plant installed on the parking stands of the University shows the superiority of the proposed model.

  • To evaluate heat environment surrounding plants diurnal change of leaf temperature in the broad-leaved deciduous and evergreen trees was measured with microclimatic environmental factors including global solar radiation, and upward and downward long wave radiation. Maximum daily solar radiation was 961.2 and 976.3 w/$m^2$ in August 9 and 23, respectively. Upward long wave radiation was slightly higher than downward long wave radiation, showing 404.2 w/$m^2$ in August 9 and 394.5 w/$m^2$ in August 23. In addition, daily maximum vapor pressure deficit was 5.42 and 6.84 kPa in August 9 and 23, respectively, indicating high evaporative demand. Quercus glauca and Acer mono was differently responded to changing light regimes. On August 9, leaf temperature at the top-positioned leaves of Acer plants was higher than air temperature as well as those of Quercus plants in the morning. This indicates that stomata in Acer plants were closed by heat stress or water stress in the morning, while Quercus plant maintained active transpiration by opening stomata. These results indicated that improved light regimes such as gap opening in the closed forest may not always affect positively in the physiology of understory plants.

  • There are terrestrial signatures of the solar activity cycle in ice core data (Ram & Stoltz 1999), but the variations in the sun's irradiance over the cycle seem too small to account for the signature (Lean 1997; Goode & Dziembowski 2003). Thus, one would expect that the signature must arise from an indirect effect(s) of solar activity. Such an indirect effect would be expected to manifest itself in the earth's reflectance. Further, the earth's climate depends directly on the albedo. Continuous observations of the earthshine have been carried out from Big Bear Solar Observatory since December 1998, with some more sporadic measurements made during the years 1994 and 1995. We have determined the annual albedos both from our observations and from simulations utilizing the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) scene model and various datasets for the cloud cover, as well as snow and ice cover. With these, we look for inter-annual and longer-term changes in the earth's total reflectance, or Bond albedo. We find that both our observations and simulations indicate that the albedo was significantly higher during 1994-1995 (activity minimum) than for the more recent period covering 1999-2001 (activity maximum). However, the sizes of the changes seem somewhat discrepant. Possible indirect solar influences on the earth's Bond albedo are discussed to emphasize that our earthshine data are already sufficiently precise to detect, if they occur, any meaningful changes in the earth's reflectance. Still greater precision will occur as we expand our single site observations to a global network.

  • This study compares cloud radiation model (CRM) and sunshine fraction radiation model (SFRM) according to the solar altitude using hourly sunshine duration (SD) and cloud cover (CC) data. Solar irradiance measurements are not easy for the expensive measuring equipment and precise measuring technology. The two models with the site fitting and South Korea coefficients have been analyzed for fourteen cities of South Korea during the period (1986-2015) and evaluated using the root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean bias error (MBE). From the comparison of the results, it is found that the SFRM with the site fitting coefficients could be the best method for fourteen locations. It may be concluded that the SFRM models of South Korea coefficients generated in this study may be used reasonably well for calculating the hourly horizontal global irradiance (HGI) at any other location of South Korea.

  • The research on meteorological data in Korea has been carried out but without much consistency and has been limited to some areas only. Of relatively more importance has been the area in the utilization of the solar energy, however, the measurement of the global solar horizontal irradiation has been quite limited. In the current study, the actually measured value of the global solar horizontal irradiation from the meteorological data and the theoretically calculated value of the global solar horizontal irradiation from the cloud amount will be analyzed comparatively. The method of analysis will employ the standard meteorological data drafted by the Korean Solar Energy Society, the standard meteorological data from the presently used simulation program and the corresponding results have been compared with the calculated value of the global solar horizontal irradiation from the cloud amount. The results of comparing the values obtained from MBE(Mean Bias Error), RMSE(Root Mean Squares for Error), t-Statistic methods and those from each of the standard meteorological data show that the actually measured value of the meteorological data which have been converted into standard meteorological data with the help of the ISO TRY method give the monthly average value of the global solar horizontal irradiation. These values compared with the monthly average value from the IWEC from the Department of Energy of the USA show that the value of the global solar horizontal irradiation in the USA is quite similar. In the case of the values obtained from calculation from the cloud amount, the weather data provided by TRNSYS, except only slight difference, which means that the actually measured values of the global solar horizontal irradiation are significant. This goes to show that in the case of Korea, the value of the global solar horizontal irradiation provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration is will be deemed correct.

  • This study examines the future variability of surface wind speed and solar radiation based on climate change scenario over the Korean Peninsula. Climate change scenarios used in this study are RCP 4.5 and 8.5 with a 12.5 km horizontal resolution. Climate change scenario RCP 4.5 and 8.5 reproduce the general features of wind speed over the Korean Peninsula, such as strong wind speed during spring and winter and weak wind speed during summer. When compared with the values of wind speed and solar radiation of the future, they are expected to decrease current wind and solar resource map. Comparing the resource maps using RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, wind speed and solar radiation decrease with increasing greenhouse gas concentration. Meteorological resource maps of future wind and solar radiation should be improved with high resolution for the industrial application.
