  • This review has dealt with definition, size, history, and status of mesocosm, and also discussed several problems and trouble shootings related to the building of mesocosm, and finally will suggest the future directions of this scientific tool. Due to the restriction of the space, the discussion mainly focused on "the mesocosm building for the soft-bottom ecosystem". The mesocosm is defined as "medium-sized, self-sustaining, and man-controllable ecosystem". This type of studies has already initiated since 1960, but nowadays it expands to the diverse fields of science and technologies, such as toxicology, limnology, environmental sciences and engineering, and even geochemistry. As a scientific tool, the mesocosm requires following aspects; replicability, repeatability, and ecological realism or accuracy. Several technical problems have to be solved for the perfect building of mesocosm. They are known as scaling, composition of seawater/sediment, light intensity, turbulence, hydraulic residence time, and top predator. These trouble shootings are provided at the discussion in detail. In the context, I expect two promising directions in the future; 1. Objectivity based on the diverse statistical methodologies, 2. "Living ecosystem modelling" coordinated with the mathematical modelling. With these, the mesocosm will be more powerful tool for the scientists and engineers to investigate the chemical and the ecological responses to the toxic materials and global climate changes.

  • The presence of airborne particles in the earth atmosphere expert important controls on the global climate because of their effects on the radiative balance. However, there are major uncertainties associated with the direct and indirect radiative effects of aerosols. In addition, their physicochemical properties cannot only the decline of air quality but also damage human health. Airborne particles were collected by two different commercial air samples, high volume sampler(for TSP) and low volume sampler(for P $M_{10}$ ) at the campus of Kunsan National University during February to September, 2000. In most cases, TSP and P $M_{10}$ were sampled once a week for the duration of 24 hours from 9:00 a.m. In addition samples were collected more intenisve, when the yellow dust was expected. Each sample was analyzed for pH and major ions concentration (C $l^{[-10]}$ , S $O_4$$^{2-}$, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , N $a^{+}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$, $K^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) by ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Acidity (pH) of TSP and P $M_{10}$ ranged from 5.09 to 8.51 and from 6.22 to 7.54, respectively. The concentrations of airborne particles were found to satisfy both the short and long-term air quality standards during the sampling period. If the ratio of ionic concentrations originating from None sea salt(Nss) to sea salt(ss) in aerosol samples was concerned, it was found that the ionic concentrations from marine environment contributed dominantly in total mass concentration in the airborne particles. When seasonal trends were examined, the TSP concentrations in spring were higher than those of other seasons. It may result form frequent occurrences of yellow dust and during the spring season. The concentration ratio of P $M_{10}$ to TSP ranged from 0.78 to 1 during the sampling period. pH in the airborne particle was highest during spring, but the other seasons maintained almost same level. These results suggest that alkaline species in yellow dust can directly neutralize aerosol acidity. During spring season, yellow dust could be a positive factor that can defer the acidification of surface soil and water by neutralizing acidic aerosols in the atmosphere.osphere.

  • During the storage of these two species in a large conservation tank, fertilized eggs were collected and the offspring were raised. During culturing of the offspring, individuals with mixed characteristics of these two species were observed, and 96 individuals were randomly tested using microsatellite markers applicable to both species. Among the 96 individuals, 15 individuals with mixed morphological characteristics were confirmed to be hybrids showing both of genotypes red seabream and blackhead seabream. Additionally, based on sequence analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (mtDNA CO1), 81 showed 99% nucleotide sequence identity to that of black sea bream, and the remaining 15 individuals showed over 99% sequence identity to that of red seabream. So, hybrids were produced by female red seabream and male blackhead seabream. These results suggest that hybrids may form in nature between these two species if their habitats overlap due to the influence of humans or global climate change.

  • Occurrence of plant diseases is dependent on various factors in the agricultural system. Due to recent extensive environmental climate changes, i.e. global warming, agricultural systems such as planting dates and cultivars are being affected. Gradual transition in disease occurrence and incidence in the agricultural fields can also be affected by direct and/or indirect environmental changes. In this study, we evaluated disease occurrence and incidence in soybean plants to investigate whether it could be related with cultivars, planting dates and geographical differences in Korea in 2008. Soybean cultivars including 'Taekwang', 'Pungsan', 'Cheongja 3', 'Saeol', and 'Dawon' were planted in four different dates, May 15, June 1, June 15, and June 30, in two locations, Suwon, and Naju. Soybean diseases such as wild fire and bacterial pustule were mainly found depending on cultivars, planting dates, and areas. Wild fire occurred severely on cv. 'Taekwang' while bacterial blight did on cv. 'Dawon' among tested cultivars. Disease developments of wild fire and bacterial blight generally decreased in delayed planting regardless of cultivars.

  • The growing amount of using the fossil fuel is bringing about environmentally, economically serious problems like as global warming. To solve the problems, the international society has begun to decrease greenhouse gases through the international agreement like as the climate change convention. In South of Korea, it was presented practical goal of Green Development try to decrease greenhouse, which is the future 60 years vision. And, it contains the strategies of Green Development and 5th Plan of Green Development. Nowadays, the government accepted the active alternative scenario 3, which is the goal of 4% decrease in greenhouse gases until 2020's, presented by Presidential Committee on Green Growth. This study established the strategies of Transport Demand Management to decrease the greenhouse gases in transportation part, and then we measured the effect of them. As a result, if it takes effect the aggressive strategies annually, it will cut greenhouse gas pollution by 3.1%, which is 7,590,000t$CO_2eq$, in transportation part. So, we can expect that it would be the effective policy tool to achieve the goal of government, which is the Green Development, if it controls the strategies of TDM effectively by the political needs.

  • Effects of iron and/or chelator addition on primary production in the equatorial Upwelling system were studied during the TOGA(Tropical oceans and Global Atmosphere) and EPOCS (Equatorial Pacific ocean Climate Studies) cruises in June and November-December of 1989. Changes in the phytoplankton biomass and the degree of iron stress were estimated using the changes in vivo fluorescence before and after the addition of DCMU, which is an inhibitor of photosynthetic electron transposer system. Nitrate uptake was measured using /SUP 45/N labeled KNO$_3$ to estimate the new production. When samples were taken from the Upwelling area where nitrate concentration was higher than 5 uM, there were significant differences between the control and cheated iron treatments in vivo fluorescence and in nitrate uptake capacity. However, CFC (Cellular fluorescence capacity) did not show any significant difference between the control and treatments until nutrient limitation becomes severse and cells become shifted-down. Outside of the Upwelling area where surface nitrate concentration was low (below 0.5 uM), there was no significant difference between the control and treatments in vivo fluorescence and CFC. It is evident that primary and new production in the equatorial Pacific Upwelling region are limited by the availability of iron. However, the physiology of phytoplankton indigenous to this region does not appear to be iron stressed judging from CFC values.

  • This study estimates the economic impact of sea-level rise on Jeju island and suggests the optimal protection level based on the FUND model. There exist a number of studies that estimate the impacts of sea-level rise on global scale, but their results are of limited use for local scale such as Korea. Therefore, this study applies some specific indicators and data of Korea into to FUND model for deriving site specific estimates. The results show that 2.01%~2.25% of land could be inundated by sea-level rise until 2100. The value of affected land is about 6.4%~7.2% of total land value. The discrepancy between the figures indicates that the area affected by sea-level rise is much more valuable than the rest of Jeju island. The optimal protection level in Jeju city is higher than that in Seguipo city, even though the coastal length of Jeju city is longer than that of Seguipo. This is due to the fact that the economic value of Jeju city is much higher than that of Seoguipo city.

  • Given the continued climate change and global warming, various technologies for greenhouse gas reduction were discussed worldwide as all 195 countries participated in the Paris Agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gases. The agreement was adopted at the 21st Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC (COP21), which was held in Paris, France, in December 2015, and it revealed that reducing CO2 is the most efficient method of greenhouse gas reduction. Accordingly, carbon capture/utilization/storage (CCUS) technology has been noted as a means of making practical contributions to CO2 reduction, and research and development (R&D) activities in many countries are active in the field of CCUS technology. Therefore, this study aims to provide a basis for CCUS R&D and strategic support measures by analyzing patent trends in technologies related to CCUS. The patent analysis collected a total of 10,137 patents in the United States, Korea, Japan, Europe, and China; the number of patents in the United States was the highest according to patent analysis by country. According to an analysis by technology, capture-related technology was high at 60%, but given the recent increase in technology related to utilization, technology demonstration, R&D, and policy support should be continued.

  • This study performs the investigation of a long-term variation of annual maximum surge heights(AMSH) and main characteristics of high surge events, and the statistical evaluation of the AMSH using sea level data at Yeosu and Tongyeong tidal stations over more than 30 years. It is found that the long-term uptrends based on the linear regression in the AMSH are 34.5 cm/34 yr at Yeosu and 33.6 cm/31 yr at Tongyeong, which are relatively much higher than those at Sokcho and Mukho in the Eastern Coast. 71% and 68% of the AMSH occur during typhoon's event in Yeosu and Tongyeong tidal stations, respectively, and the highest surge records are mostly produced by the typhoon. The generalized extreme value distribution taking into account of the time variable is applied to detect time trend in annual maximum surge heights. In addition, Gumbel distribution is checked to find which one is best fitted to the data using likelihood ratio test. The return level and its 90% confidence interval are obtained for the statistical prediction of the future trend. The prevention of the growing storm surge damage by the intensified typhoon requires the steady analysis and prediction of the surge events associated with the climate change.

  • In this study, we examined the flux of carbon and water using an eco-hydrological model, Regional Hydro-Ecologic Simulation System (RHESSys). Our purposes were to develop a set of parameters optimized for a well-designed experimental watershed (Gwangneung Research Watershed, GN) and then, to test suitability of the parameters for predicting carbon and water fluxes of other watershed with different regimes of climate, topography, and vegetation structure (i.e Gangseonry Watershed in Mt. Jumbong, GS). Field datasets of stream flow, soil water content (SWC), and wood biomass product (WBP) were utilized for model parameterization and validation. After laborious parameterization processes, RHESSys was validated with the field observations from the GN watershed. The parameter set identified at the GN watershed was then applied to the GS watershed in Mt. Jumbong, which resulted in good agreement for SWC but poor predictability for WBP. Our study showed that RHESSys simulated reliable SWC at the GS by adjusting site-specific porosity only. In contrast, vegetation productivity would require more rigorous site-specific parameterization and hence, further study is necessary to identify primary field ecophysiological variables for enhancing model parameterization and application to multiple watersheds.
