  • Transparent bulletproof windows play an important role in the munitions industry. The thickness of bulletproof windows including soda-lime silicate(SLS) glass, polyvinyl butyral, poly urethane, main defense(200MD), and safety film was reduced from 40mm to 29mm by adjustment of SLS glass laminated array. Borosilicate glasses generally have lower surface density and more excellent mechanical properties than SLS glass. Borosilicate glass was strengthened by ion exchange in the $KNO_3$ powder. The maximum mechanical properties were observed at $550^{\circ}C$ for 10min. The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness and 3-point bending strength of ion exchanged samples were about $775kg/mm^2$, $1.91MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 764MPa each, which are about 27%, 149% and 249% higher than parent borosilicate glass, respectively. The penetration depth of K+ ion at $550^{\circ}C$ for 10min was $59.8{\mu}m$. As a result, the transparent bulletproof windows were predicted to be more lightweight by ion exchange of borosilicate glass. If the SLS glass for bulletproof windows is replaced by ion exchanged borosilicate glass, the bulletproof windows can be expected to be lightweight and thinner.

  • Soda-lime silicate (SLS) glass was strengthened by ion exchange for application of thin and lightweight bulletproof windows. The optimal conditions for ion exchanged SLS glass (thickness of 3 and 10 mm) at $480^{\circ}C$ were 10 and 17 min, respectively. The Vickers hardness values of the strengthened SLS glass samples with thicknesses of 3 and 10 mm were $5.9{\pm}0.22$ and $6.7{\pm}0.17GPa$, respectively, which values were about 22% higher than those of parent SLS glass. By laminating a multilayer defense film and polycarbonate sheet with ion exchanged SLS glass, we were able to make a thin and lightweight bulletproof window (24.25 mm, 4.57 kg, $50.06kg/m^2$, $V_{50}$ 901.8 m/s). As a result, the thickness of the bulletproof window was decreased by about 39% from 40 to 24.25 mm. The light transmittance in the visible range satisfied the standard (over 76%) for bulletproof windows.

  • a-C:H films were coated on windows of mobile telephone by RF plasma chemical vapor deposition equipment made in our company. Thickness of the coatings is about 0.7 micrometers and they have high hardness, low friction coefficient, good adhesion, high optical transparency and chemical inertness. Knoop hardness of the diamond-like carbon films on glass substrate is 2328 kg/mm$^2$. The adherence between films and substrate is good and shows to be 69 N by scratching test. The optical performance is improved obviously owing to coat the film on it. The index of the coated windows is 2.5, transmission of visible light is larger than 90%, and transmission of ultraviolet light decreases by 30% and the ultraviolet light can be obstructed obviously. The coated glass also has self-clean effect and decontamination ability. The films have hydrophobic character and the soakage angle of water drop is larger than 90 degrees. The windows have fog-proof ability owing to eliminate the capillary phenomena in the inner surface. The physics and chemical properties of the coated windows are steady. Study indicates that the performance of a-C:H coated mobile phone windows are improved notably on wear-resistance, corrosion-proof and optical properties and it is excellent mobile windows protective coatings.

  • Possibility of the remote eavesdropping through window glass is investigated using a laser sensor. Various thicknesses and types of glass windows are excited by maximum length sequency (MLS) signal and the vibration sound is detected by a laser doppler vibrometer. Intelligibility of the detected sound is evaluated using the speech transmission index (STI), which is based on the modulation transfer function (MTF). In order to identify the disturbing effect, different level of disturbing wave is generated by an outside speaker and a window shaker attached on the glass window. On the different thickness of glass windows, decrease effect of the speech intelligibility is analysed.

  • The determination of the blast protection level and the corresponding minimum load-bearing capacity for a laminated glass (LG) window is of crucial importance for safety and security design purposes. In this paper, the focus is given to the window response under near-field blast loading, i.e., where relatively small explosives would be activated close to the target, representative of attack scenarios using small commercial drones. In general, the assessment of the load-bearing capacity of a window is based on complex and expensive experiments, which can be conducted for a small number of configurations. On the other hand, nowadays, validated numerical simulations tools based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) are available to partially substitute the physical tests for the assessment of the performance of various LG systems, especially for the far-field blast loading. However, very little literature is available on the LG window performance under near-field blast loads, which differs from far-field situations in two points: i) the duration of the load is very short, since the blast wavelength tends to increase with the distance and ii) the load distribution is not uniform over the window surface, as opposed to the almost plane wave configuration for far-field configurations. Therefore, the current study focuses on the performance assessment and structural behaviour of LG windows under near-field blasts. Typical behavioural trends are investigated, by taking into account possible relevant damage mechanisms in the LG window components, while size effects for target LG windows are also addressed under a multitude of blast loading configurations.

  • Special attention is required for the design of windows due to their high thermal vulnerability. This paper examines the problems that might arise in the application of the u-value, by reflecting the changes in the u-value of the window, depending on the window-to-wall ratio obtained in an energy demand analysis. Research indicates that the u-value of a window increases with an increase in the difference between the u-values of the frames and the glass. Relative to the changes in the u-value of the windows, the energy demand varied from 1.3% to 9.3%. Windows with a g-value of 0.3 or 0.5 displayed a higher energy demand than windows with a g-value of 0.7. Therefore, when the difference between the performance of the glass and the frame is significant, especially when the g-value is small, a modified heat transmission coefficient should be applied to the window size during the evaluation of the building energy demand.

  • In the building, the opening penetrates the wall and serves as a spreading channel for smoke and flame in case of fire. In Korea, more than 1,500 fire plume are generated annually, and the number has increased by about 30% over the past five years. Therefore, in the case of windows protecting the opening, fire protection performance is important to prevent the spread of fire. However, in Korea, the standard for window is not clear. In this study, fire tests (EN 13823) for windows were conducted in Korea, and then fire protection performance of windows was compared. As a result of the experiment, PVC windows showed a phenomenon that they could not withstand the temperature during the fire experiment, and AL windows showed a difference in the degree of cracking of the glass.

  • This study aims to provide fundamental data for enhancing the sound insulation performance of windows. For this study, windows composed of various types and thicknesses, were classified into five categories; fixed, single, double, triple and airtight, and then tested. In order to analyze their sound insulation characteristics and performances. test results were rated using methods such as D, STC, Ts and arithmetical mean. It was found that the sound insulation performance of windows is affected due to their type rather than the thickness of the glass. It was also found that when gap between the inner and outer frames was filled with caulking material, the sound transmission loss at high frequency bands was greatly improved. Therefore, the sound insulation performance of windows would be enhanced by minimizing the gap between frames.
