To make the rationale design of interface between cell and artificial surface, many studies have been controlled influencing cue which can typically be divided into two central categories: chemical cues based on modification surface chemical properties containing attractive/repulsive molecules, and physical cues that may include applied tension/stress, electrical polarization, magnetic field, and topography. Recently, researches have been focused on physical cue, especially topography. The surface topography may influence cellular responses for example, cell adhesion, cell morphology and gene expression. However, there were few systematic studies about these nanotopographical effects on neuronal developments in a feature size-dependent manner. Herein, we report a nanoscale-resolved study of nanotopographical effects on cellular adhesion and growth. In this study, we use substrates with packed glass beads by rubbing method for generating highly periodic nanotopographies with various sizes. We found that acceleration of neuritogenesis appeared only on the beads larger than 200 nm in diameter, and observed that filopodial thickness was comparable with this scale. This study is expected to be essential to elucidate the nanotopographical effect on cellular adhesion and growth.
The glass/Ta(5.8 nm)/NiFe(5 nm)/Cu(2.3 nm)/NiFe(3 nm)/IrMn(12 nm)/Ta(5.8 nm) GMR-SV (giantmagneto-resistance-spin valve) multilayer structure films with a magnetoresistance ratio (MR) of 5.0 % and a magnetic sensitivity (MS) of 1.5%/Oe was deposited by dc magnetron sputtering method. Also, GMR-SV device having a width of $7{\mu}m{\sim}8{\mu}m$ similar to the diameter of RBC (red blood cell) was fabricated by the light lithography process. When RBCs coupled with several magnetic beads with a diameter of $1{\mu}m$ dropped upon the GMR-SV device having MR = 1.06% and MS = 0.3 %/Oe, there is observed the variation of about included of a resistance value of ${\Delta}R=0.4{\Omega}$ and ${\Delta}MR=0.15%$ around a external magnetic field of -0.6 Oe. From these results, the GMR-SV device having the width magnitude of a few micron size can be applied as the biosensor for the analysis of a new magnetic property of hemoglobin inside of RBC combined to magnetic beads.
The photocatalyst of $TiO_2$coated on glass bead was prepared from sol-gel method to remove the VOC (vola-tile organic compounds) by the photocatalytic reaction. The coated films were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), specific surface area(BET), and scanning electron microscopy observation (SEM), The gas-phase photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene(TCE) and benzene with coated titanium dioxide on glass beads was in-vestigated using a fixed bed reactor. The degradation was calculated by the concentration difference with the retained on the reactor with aid of gas chromatography. At steady state, conversion yields were obtained for 80% of trichloroeth-vlene in 400 ppmv concentration and 65% on benzene in the range of concentration from 50 to 300 ppmv, respectively.
The characteristics and composition of the ancient glasses excavated at Songdong-ri, Sangju, Kyongsangbuk-do were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope attached with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer. As the results, the glass beads of Songdong-ri showed that there were changed the composition, the color and types according to the periods. There were appeared potash and soda glass group at A.D.4 century and potash and mixed alkali glass group at A.D. 17 century. The potash glasses of A.D. 4c. were colored blue and contained low $Al_2O_3$ and CaO composition as below $5\%$. The soda glasses of This period were colored blue and red, and contained $Al_2O_3$ composition as upper $5\%$. But the potash glasses of A.D.17c. showed the transparent yellow color and considerably higher CaO, $11.7\%$. 'Coil glasses' typed unique were colored yellow-brown, Cu-blue and colorless, were classified the mixed alkali glass as upper $5\%\;of\;Na_2O\;and\;K_2O$. The composition of coil glasses were presented first at this study.
The multilayer structure of glass/Ta(5.8 nm)/NiFe(5 nm)/Cu(t nm)/NiFe(3 nm)/FeMn(12 nm)/Ta(5.8 nm) as typical GMR-SV (giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) films is prepared by ion beam sputtering deposition (IBD). The coercivity and magnetoresiatance ratio are increased and decreased for the decrease of Cu thickness when the thickness of nonmagnetic Cu layer from is varied 2.2 nm to 3.0 nm. It means that the decrease of non-magntic layer is effected to the interlayer exchange coupling of pinned layer and the spin configuration array of free layer. For experiment of detecting and dropping of magnetic beads we used the GMR-SV sensor with glass/Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn/Ta structure. From the comparison of before and after for the dropping status of magnetic bead, the variations of MR ratio, $H_{ex}$, and $H_c$ are showed 0.9 %, 3 Oe, and 2 Oe, respectively. The fabrication of GMR-SV sensor was included in the process of film deposition, photo-lithography, ion milling, and MR measurement. Further, GMR-SV device can be easily integrated so that detecting biosensor on a single chip becomes possible.
The glass bead surface was coated using a TiO2 sol, after which dry-treated (TB) and calcined (TBc) samples were prepared. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and toluene, as well as characterization of the TiO2 thin films, were carried out. The TiO2 thin film of the TB sample had the same shape as the sponge foam, according to FE-SEM, XPS, and FTIR analyses, and contained both amorphous and crystalline TiO2. On the other hand, crystalline TiO2 was mainly present in the TiO2 thin film of the TBc sample, and needle-shaped particles and tiny ones were mixed. The adsorption capacity for methylene blue and the degradation rate of the TBc sample were less than 10 % compared with those of the TB sample, and the adsorption capacity and degradation rate of the TBc sample decreased similarly as the amount of TiO2 coating increased. The amount of toluene adsorption for the TBc sample (46 mg/g) was smaller than that of the TB sample with the same coating amount, but the degradation rate was similar. In the case of the TB sample, the degradation rate for toluene decreased less than the adsorption capacity as the amount of TiO2 coating increased. This result is considered to be because, in the non-calcined TB sample, the active site reduction of the crystalline particles occurred less and the specific surface area of the amorphous texture decreased as the amount of TiO2 coating increased.

Dual-channel nano-electrospray has recently become an ionization technique of great promise especially in biological mass spectrometry. This unique approach takes advantage of the mixing processes that occurs during electrospray. Understanding in more detail the fundamental principles influencing spray formation further study of the origins of the mixing processes: (1) in a Taylor cone region, (2) in charged droplets or (3) in both environments. The dual-channel emitters were made from borosilicate theta-shape glass tubes (O.D. 1.2 mm) and had a tip diameters of less than 4 μm. Electrical contact was achived by deposition of a thin film of an appropriate metal onto the surface of the emitter. The experimental investigation of the Taylor cone formation in a dual-channel electrospray emitter has been carried out by injection of polystyrene beads (diameter 3 μm) at very low concentrations into one of the channels of the non-tapered theta-glass tubes. High-speed camera experiments were set up to visualize the mixing processes in Taylor cone regions for dual-channel emitters. Mass spectra from dual nano-electrospray are presented.
In this study, we analyzed the effects of several process variables on the removal efficiencies of NO and $SO_2$ by the dielectric barrier discharge process combined with photocatalysts. The $TiO_2$ photocatalysts were coated onto the spherical-shaped glass beads as dielectric materials by the dip-coating method to analyze the effects of photodegradation reaction on the NO and $SO_2$ removal. As the voltage applied to the plasma reactor increases, or as the pulse frequency of applied voltage increases, the NO and $SO_2$ removal efficiencies increase. Also as the residence time increases, or as the initial concentration of NO decreases, the NO and $SO_2$ removal efficiencies increase. The higher the amount of $TiO_2$ particles coated onto the glass bead is, the larger the surface area of $TiO_2$ particles for the photodegradation reaction is and the NO and $SO_2$ are removed more quickly by the faster photodegradation reactions.
Glass pieces excavated from Mireuksa Temple dated $7^{th}$ century A.D. were characterized by chemical composition, specific gravity and melting point. Lead isotope ratios of lead glasses were also compared with those of lead ore to attribute which lead ore was delivered for making lead glass. It was known that some lead glasses found in Japan were similar with those of Mireuksa Temple as comparing the data of chemical composition and lead isotope ratios. Characteristics of lead glass from Mireuksa Temple Thirty five glass pieces of Mireuksa Temple were analyzed for five oxides and found that all was lead glass system(PbO-$SiO_2$) with the range of 70~79% for PbO and 20~28% for $SiO_2$. The concentrations of oxides such as $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and CuO were below 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.9%, respectively. Principal component analysis(PCA) as a statistical method was carried out to classify glasses with the similarities of chemical concentrations. The result of PCA has shown that three groups of glasses were created according to the excavation positions and two major oxides(PbO and $SiO_2$) greatly contributed to the dispersion of glasses on principal component 1(PC1) axis and trace element oxides($Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$) for PC2 axis. Most of lead glasses were greenish by the efficacy of iron and copper oxides and some showed yellowish-green. The gravity of lead glasses was about 4.4~5.4 and estimated melting point was near $670^{\circ}C$. Lead isotope ratios of glasses were analyzed and found quite close to a lead ore from the Bupyeong mine in Gyeonggi-do. Comparison with lead glasses found in Japan Lead glasses of Mireuksa Temple were compared with those of Japan on the basis of chemical and physical data. Chemical compositions of Japanese lead glasses dated $7^{th}{\sim}8^{th}$ century A.D. were nearly similar with those of Mireuksa Temple but lead isotope ratios of those were separated into two groups. Three distribution maps of lead ores of Korea, Japan and China with lead isotope ratios were applied for lead glasses found in Japan. The result have shown that the locations of lead glasses from Fukuoka Prefecture coincided with the region of northen part of Korea and similar with those of Mireuksa Temple and lead glasses from Nara Prefecture dated $8^{th}$ century A.D. were located in the region of Japanese lead ore. This research has demonstrated that lead glasses of Mireuksa Temple conveyed to Miyajidake site, Fukuoka Prefecture around $7^{th}$ century A.D. and glass melting pots and glass beads excavated from Nara Prefecture confirmed the first use of Japanese lead ore for production of lead glasses from the end of $7^{th}$ century A.D.
Methods for the extraction of DNA from water sample were approximated. Four different procedures of DNA extraction were carried out with pellets obtained from centrifugation of 4 liter water samples. The recovery efficiency and purity of DNA extracted by each method from different sources were compared. DNA yield varied with extraction methods, Method I, which involves enzymatic and freeze-thaw lysis steps and phenol and phenol-chloroform purification of extracted nucleic acid, showed a significantly higher yield and purity than the other methods. The use of glass beads in the DNA extraction methods improved the purity of DNA suitable for PCR. Bovine serum albumin in the PCR reaction mixture was useful in reducing inhibitory effects of contaminants. The efficiency of an extraction method was determined by the detection of the aer of Aeromonas hydrophila with PCR. The lower limit of detection of A. hydrophila from seeded tap water was 2 CFU/ml in PCR when method I was used for DNA preparation.
